O Primeiro Mandamento - Capítulo 12
Ryan correu rapidamente. Ele falou enquanto acariciava o próprio pescoço, com um olhar onde se podia perceber um leve medo.
—Você realmente estava tentando me matar agora.
Talvez pela sua pele ser sensível, ou porque a força imposta por Alexei foi muito grande, já havia uma marca avermelhada no pescoço de Ryan. Ao ver a marca, que logo se transformaria em um hematoma, Alexei mordeu os lábios. O olhar de Valery também se voltou para o pescoço do Omega. Alexei tentou se justificar, olhando de relance para Valery, que observava Ryan.
—Foi por causa do que você disse…
Ele estava prestes a se justificar.
—O que foi que eu disse?
Mas as palavras ficaram presas em sua garganta. Como era um assunto que ele preferia evitar, Alexei fechou a boca, mas Ryan não parou. Até agora ele não tinha mostrado nenhuma hesitação, e parecia ter decidido desde o momento em que Valery apareceu que não calaria a boca.
—Por que não diz? Se está tão confiante, fale.
Valery virou a cabeça lentamente. Seus olhos, que exigiam uma explicação, fixaram-se em Alexei e Ryan o encorajou.
—Lerusha, pergunte a ele. Pergunte ao seu ‘irmão’ por que ele tentou me matar. Você sempre disse isso quando nos encontrávamos; que odiava quando ele lhe escondia coisas.
Seu filho da puta. Um xingamento subiu à garganta de Alexei, mas ele conseguiu se conter. Ele só precisava evitar que Ryan revelasse o que havia sido dito anteriormente. Valery não pode saber disso. De qualquer forma, era melhor que ele continuasse ignorando.
—Você não propôs um acordo?
Alexei murmurou em um tom baixo, e Ryan balançou a cabeça e com um leve sorriso, ele encarou Alexei. O olhar vitorioso em seu rosto dizia tudo, Ryan não tinha nada a perder nesta situação. Não havia necessidade de manter o acordo. A catástrofe já estava diante de Alexei.
—Que acordo? E o que você está escondendo, afinal?
Valery, que estava em silêncio, perguntou,Alexei passou a mão pelos cabelos de forma áspera. Desde que Ryan Winter apareceu, ele estava agindo de forma precipitada, ficando mais ansioso. Se pudesse voltar no tempo alguns minutos, teria levado Ryan para outro lugar, longe daqui. Refletindo sobre o erro mais estúpido que já cometera na vida, Alexei fechou os olhos com força. Dúvidas passaram por sua mente. Ele sabia que o resultado dependeria do que dissesse, mas não conseguia contar a verdade para Valery.
—Não é algo que você precise saber, Lerusha. Sério não há necessidade.
No final, Alexei disse o que estava acostumado a dizer. Foi a pior escolha possível. Quando disse que não havia nada para Valery saber, os olhos do rapaz se estreitaram. A insegurança começou a surgir nos belos olhos verdes, sentimentos de traição, uma decepção quase automática e algo parecido com medo começaram a transparecer no rosto de Valery.
—Não era para as coisas entre nós serem diferentes agora? —Valery perguntou, como se ainda quisesse acreditar. Ele deu um passo à frente. —Você disse que sentia muito por ter agido assim no passado.
Valery sussurrou com uma voz ansiosa.
—Eu pensei que isso significava que… você não iria mais agir como antes. —Ele balançou a cabeça levemente e perguntou.
—Eu entendi errado? Não, certo? Agora eu sou o guardião de Alyosha. Você pode me contar tudo, então…
Nesse momento, Ryan, que estava ouvindo, interrompeu. Com um olhar de quem não conseguia entender, ele perguntou novamente.
—Guardião?
—Ryan, conversamos depois.
—Lerusha, por que você deveria ser o guardião dessa pessoa? Na verdade, o oposto faria mais sentido, por que…!
Valery fez um gesto cuidadoso, mas firme, para Ryan, indicando que ele deveria ficar em silêncio. Mesmo sentindo um sentimento de desconfiança, ele se colocou entre Ryan e Alexei, como se estivesse protegendo Alexei.
—Fique quieto, Ryan. Alyosha não deve se assustar.
Ryan olhou para a cena, em que Valery protegia Alexei, um alfa, como se fosse seu omega com uma expressão de perplexidade. Piscando, meio atordoado, Ryan perguntou cautelosamente.
—Lerusha, por que diabos você trata alguém assim como se fosse um ômega…?
Ryan, que estava falando até aquele ponto, arregalou os olhos e fechou a boca. Ele virou a cabeça bruscamente e olhou fixamente para Alexei. Ryan, que olhava para Alexei como se estivesse verificando alguma coisa, abriu os lábios. Logo, ele sussurrou, olhando para Alexei com uma expressão de espanto, como alguém que acabou de testemunhar uma cena horrível.
—Você enlouqueceu.
No momento em que ouviu aquele pequeno murmúrio, Alexei teve uma forte intuição de que não deveria mais estar ali. Ele começou a sentir medo do que Ryan poderia dizer a seguir, um tipo de medo que nunca havia experimentado, nem mesmo diante da morte. Alexei segurou a mão de Valery, que se aproximava, e disse a ele:
—Vou te contar quando chegarmos em casa. Vamos sair daqui primeiro. Não quero falar sobre isso aqui. Farei como você disse, vou explicar o máximo que puder…
Com a força desesperada que o puxava, Valery deu um passo, embora com uma expressão confusa. Sabendo que a hesitação era evidente nos olhos do garoto, Alexei apressou o passo. Era melhor explicar as coisas do que deixar que Valery ouvisse aquilo da boca de outra pessoa.
—Não vá, Valery.
Nesse momento, Ryan segurou a outra mão de Valery.
—Você sabe que ele não vai dizer a verdade, não sabe? Sempre foi assim. —Ryan segurou Valery que estava prestes a escapar, balançou a cabeça e disse.
—Lerusha, vamos embora.
Alexei chamou Valery de forma firme, como se não houvesse necessidade de prestar atenção em Ryan. Mas Valery não conseguiu se mover. Talvez a desconfiança que sentia dentro de si há tanto tempo o tivesse impedido de seguir em frente, e ele parou, nesse momento Ryan se agarrou aquela breve hesitação.
—Até quando você vai deixar que ele te manipule? Agora você pode fazer o que quiser. Valery, não vá com ele. Qualquer pessoa, menos ele.”
Alexei apertou a mão dele com mais força. Seu coração batia tão forte que parecia que iria explodir, ele sabia o que Ryan ia dizer, mesmo antes de ouvir. Não posso deixar isso acontecer. Então puxou o braço de Valery com força, mas quando parecia que os dois iriam embora, Ryan finalmente gritou:
—Esse homem é parente da pessoa que matou seus pais!
Eu deveria ter deixado aquele bastardo inconsciente antes. Esse pensamento lhe passou pela cabeça. Ele queria tapar os ouvidos de Valery e levá-lo embora, mas já era tarde demais. Alexei ergueu a voz ao mesmo tempo para evitar de alguma forma que Valery acreditasse nas bobagens que Ryan havia dito.
—Não ouça, Lerusha. Não dê ouvidos a coisas assim. Você deve escutar o que seu irmão diz.
Valery não se moveu. Ele piscou enquanto olhava para Alexei, seu rosto mostrava confusão, como alguém que tinha acabado de ouvir algo inacreditável. Alexei, sem querer ver as emoções que pairavam nos olhos verdes vacilantes, tentou de todas as formas levá-lo embora. No entanto, Valery não se moveu como antes. Aproveitando o momento, Ryan rapidamente continuou a explicar.
—Esse homem não é seu irmão. Ele não é sua família.
Ryan parecia à beira de enlouquecer. Seus olhos estavam avermelhados.
—Ele é apenas o filho das pessoas que mataram seus pais. Ele é o filho daqueles que te deixaram órfão e que transformaram sua vida, que poderia ter sido normal, nesse inferno.
A mão de Valery, que estava sendo segurada, tremeu levemente. Era possível ver um suspiro fino escapar por entre seus lábios entreabertos.
—Ele tentou me matar porque tinha medo de que eu te contasse isso.
Foi o limite. Alexei, incapaz de conter a explosão de emoções que o dominava, falou.
—Cala a porra dessa boca.
Sua voz estava carregada de ameaça, mas embora Ryan tenha se sobressaltado, não recuou. Em vez disso, ele olhou para Alexei com uma expressão de estranha certeza. Alexei não sabia o que Ryan estava pensando, mas não gostou nada daquilo, nesse momento a mesma vontade violenta que o havia envolvido antes começou a emergir novamente. Tudo o que ele conseguia pensar era que precisava tirar o ômega de perto de Valery de qualquer maneira. Seguindo esse instinto, ele avançou sem perceber, e naquele instante…
Valery puxou a mão que Alexei segurava, impedindo-o.
Alexei cambaleou, puxado por uma força silenciosa mas firme. Sentiu como se o chão tivesse desabado sob seus pés, e naquele momento, seus olhos encontraram os de Valery. Ele viu os olhos verdes distorcidos, como se não quisesse acreditar.
—Seus pais morreram porque não conseguiram pagar a dívida que tinham com Igor. O pai dele fez isso, não foi outra pessoa, mas o pai desse maldito. O responsável por seus pais na época era Mikhail Sorokin. Não entende, Lerusha? Esse homem te enganou desde o começo.
Ryan se aproximou de Valery, que estava abalado, e implorou.
—Por favor, acredite em mim, eu nunca menti para você, nem uma vez. Não tenho motivo para te enganar. Não estou inventando nada, eu vi isso nos documentos que Khaleesi tinha, e pela reação desse desgraçado, você não pode deixar de acreditar.
Enquanto ouvia as palavras de Ryan, que vinham como uma torrente sem chance de interromper, Alexei sentiu seu interior se encher de escuridão. As respostas fervilhavam em sua garganta. Ele sabia que ninguém de fora poderia entender completamente o que aconteceu naquele dia, mas nunca imaginou que Ryan soubesse daquela forma. As veias de seus olhos pulsavam, as memórias de sua família, que ele pensava estarem desfeitas, ressurgiram e acenderam um fogo em seu peito. A imagem de sua mãe, dizendo para ele fugir, e a mão de seu pai, que acariciou sua cabeça pela última vez, vieram à tona com uma clareza perturbadora.

—É verdade?
A pergunta de Valery interrompeu Alexei, que estava prestes a explodir em emoção. Valery sempre foi o único capaz de impedi-lo de cruzar a última linha, e agora não foi diferente. Alexei conseguiu engolir o segredo que havia guardado sozinho por toda a vida.
—Alyosha nunca faria uma coisa tão horrível comigo, certo? Deve haver algum mal-entendido.
Valery, com uma doçura indescritível, tentou acreditar nele. Com os olhos esperando por uma explicação, Valery apertou ainda mais a mão de Alexei.
—…Sim.
Com a resposta de Alexei, Ryan soltou uma risada amarga. Os olhos verdes de Valery se arregalaram rapidamente.
—Então me diga o que aconteceu. Está tudo bem, pode me contar.”
Com uma gentileza surpreendente, Valery sussurrou, como se dissesse que ele poderia compartilhar qualquer coisa. Talvez Valery acredite em mim se eu contar a verdade. Quando ele abriu a boca para falar, Valery inclinou a cabeça para escutar, olhando diretamente para ele. Aquilo o fez perder o fôlego. Era algo que nunca havia contado a ninguém. Nem mesmo a Yuri ele conseguiu explicar direito. Apenas Vasily sabia vagamente o que aconteceu naquela noite miserável que ficou gravada em sua memória quando jovem. Ninguém, exceto Alexei e Igor, sabia da verdade.
Sempre é por causa do dinheiro…
Alexei murmurou para si mesmo. Sim, o problema era o dinheiro. O que muitas vezes acontece com quem contrai empréstimos de agiotas também aconteceu com Alisa e Maksim. A dívida cresceu além do que podiam suportar, e começou a corroer a felicidade da família que tentava de alguma forma sobreviver.
Igor decidiu que era hora de lidar com o casal Belov, que havia atrasado os pagamentos por meses. Se há pessoas que valem mais vivas e outras que é melhor destruir, na avaliação de Igor, o casal Belov pertencia ao segundo grupo. O homem ainda tinha membros úteis, que podiam ser vendidos por aí, e a mulher sempre tinha utilidade em algum lugar.
No dia em que Igor deu a ordem de tomar tudo o que eles tinham, os pais de Alexei fizeram o que era certo. Talvez porque a bondade que foram forçados a reprimir por toda a vida finalmente tenha escapado de maneira irreparável…
—Alyosha.
Eles tentaram salvá-los.
—Estou ouvindo, me diga.
Mas acabaram encontrando um destino que talvez fosse inevitável.
—Fale comigo.
Todos que estavam ao lado de Alexei desapareceram naquela noite, deixando para trás um pequeno fardo chamado Valery. Apenas aquela criança pequena, que mal compreendia o que estava acontecendo, permaneceu ao lado dele. O medo da morte e a realidade insuportável o perseguiram, mas Alexei decidiu focar apenas em Valery.
Naquela noite de neve pesada, enquanto corria por uma estrada interminável, Alexei encontrou o garoto encolhido dentro de uma lata de lixo, quase congelado até a morte. Ele não poderia deixar Valery ali, imóvel, para morrer. Um garoto de 12 anos que sobreviveu sozinho não tinha muitas opções. Enquanto corria em direção a Vasily, o único adulto a quem ele poderia pedir ajuda, Alexei abraçou Valéry e sussurrou:
Lerusha, eu estarei ao seu lado.
Eu vou te proteger.

No momento em que o grito desesperado de Valery ecoou, Alexei voltou à realidade. Ele ofegou, puxando o ar que estava preso, e ficou ali, encarando Valery sem conseguir esboçar nenhuma expressão. Se eu contar isso para você, será que você ficará bem? Se eu disser que minha família se sacrificou para tentar salvar seus pais, você ainda será tão adorável e alegre como antes? Se souber que eu vivi até agora criando a criança que poderia ser considerada inimiga, você vai ficar bem com isso? Vai conseguir sorrir de forma pura, sem esse peso no coração?
Alexei sempre acreditou que a culpa era o sentimento mais miserável que alguém poderia carregar. O rancor e a raiva às vezes dão forças para continuar, mas a culpa, que não pode ser redimida, é o veneno mais mortal para pessoas de bom coração. Para Valery, a culpa seria o sentimento mais cruel, capaz de corroer sua alma. Ao contrário de criminosos como Igor e ele.
No instante em que as lágrimas finalmente começaram a cair dos olhos verdes de Valery, Alexei tomou uma decisão. As palavras de Ryan, acusando-o de ser egoísta, passaram pela sua mente, e ele não pôde deixar de sorrir. Valery franziu o cenho, confuso com aquele sorriso que não combinava com a situação. Mas era verdade. Alexei Sorokin sempre tomou decisões de forma egoísta, ele era autoritário, obstinado, e sempre agiu da forma que achava melhor para proteger Valery.
Então, em vez de sentir culpa por alguém assim, é melhor que Valery me odeie com todas as suas forças. Se era algo que não podia mais ser escondido ou enterrado, Alexei decidiu, como sempre, carregar esse fardo sozinho. Era mais fácil assim.
—Isso realmente importa?
Alexei decidiu não negar nem afirmar. Afinal, ele sempre foi assim para Valery.
—O que importa é que estamos juntos, você e eu.
Ele agiu como sempre, mas, ao mesmo tempo, estava sendo sincero. Ele falou como se não fosse nada, mas, no fundo, havia uma esperança frágil de que Valery aceitasse suas palavras sem questionar. Nunca teve uma vida fácil, então, só por hoje, desejava ter um pouco de sorte.
—Decidimos partir juntos.
As lágrimas começaram a escorrer silenciosamente pelo rosto de Valery, e seus olhos verdes, agora vermelhos de tanto chorar, olharam para Alexei com uma tristeza profunda, ele sentiu a resignação lentamente tomando conta de si. Enquanto se dava conta de que estava causando sofrimento ao garoto, alguém que temia tanto o silêncio de Alexei a ponto de quase se tornar um trauma, ele percebeu o quão fútil era sua esperança.
—Lerusha.
Ryan, que observava os dois por um momento, falou com uma voz controlada.
—Vamos.
Com essa única palavra, que indicava que não havia mais nada a ser dito, Alexei sorriu novamente. Olhando para aquele que estava tirando a única coisa que ele tinha, percebeu que não sentia mais ressentimento. No fim das contas, Alexei reconheceu que Ryan estava destinado a vencer essa batalha. Apesar das palavras de Ryan, Valery permaneceu parado, olhando lentamente para o chão. Seus olhos fixaram-se na sacola de papel reciclado que havia caído no chão de azulejos cinzentos. Valery observou a sacola de papel em silêncio por um longo tempo antes de finalmente abrir a boca para falar, quase sussurrando.
—Você não está grávido, não é?
Alexei ficou surpreso ao ouvir essas palavras. Valery ainda estava olhando para o envelope.
—Na verdade, nunca esteve, certo?
Essa foi a única coisa que Alexei não conseguiu responder descaradamente. Ao contrário da verdade que ele tinha escondido para proteger Valery, essa mentira era uma manipulação desprezível para manter o garoto ao seu lado. Quando ele ficou em silêncio, Valery lentamente desviou o olhar. Ele ergueu a cabeça novamente para encarar Alexei, apagando a expressão do rosto.
—Um ômega grávido não entra em ciclo de calor, certo?
As palavras, ditas como se ele sempre soubesse, cortaram a respiração de Alexei.
—Mas como foi Alyosha que disse isso… —A voz de Valery, que soou vazia e resignada, ecoou pelo ambiente. —Eu acreditei.
E isso foi o fim. Com isso, Valery soltou a mão que segurava Alexei sem dizer mais nada. Quando suas mãos se separaram, uma dor profunda atingiu o peito de Alexei, tão intensa que quase o fez chorar, algo que ele nunca havia feito antes. Seus dedos se contraíram, mas Valery foi mais rápida em soltá-los.
Valery passou por ele sem olhar para trás. O olhar que Ryan lançou para Alexei ao passar por ele nem sequer foi notado. O homem baixou a cabeça e olhou fixamente para a sacola de papel feita em papel reciclado no chão, ele se perguntou, de maneira desconexa, o que poderia haver naquela sacola. O que diabos havia ali dentro? O que era aquela maldita sacola de papel e por que Valery voltou com ela? O que diabos você trouxe?
Ele se abaixou e estendeu o braço. A sacola de papel que fez um farfalhar indicando que estava bastante pesada. Rasgando a sacola, ele encontrou vários frascos de comprimidos dentro. Pegando um deles aleatoriamente, Alexei leu as letras impressas, mordendo os lábios. Havia vitaminas com a descrição de serem suplementos para gravidez, além de outros suplementos que ele nunca tinha tomado antes, também havia remédios indicados para parar de fumar. Com as mãos trêmulas, ele pegou algo que estava no fundo da sacola. Era um chocolate coberto com flocos de coco branco. Ao ver a marca familiar, mas ao mesmo tempo desconhecida, Alexei lutou para conter um soluço que quase escapou.
Valery não sabia que ele não gostava de doces, e o primeiro chocolate que o jovem havia comprado para ele tinha exatamente essa aparência.
Ao ver isso, Alexei não conseguiu mais se segurar. A decisão de deixá-lo ir foi subitamente substituída por um desejo desesperado. Ele nunca tinha vivido sem Valery antes. Não havia como ele sobreviver sem Valery, ele se lembrou dessa verdade óbvia tarde demais. Alexei saiu correndo do banheiro e foi para o corredor.
O corredor vazio não mostrava nenhum sinal de Valery e através da porta, o exterior escurecido indicava que o sol estava começando a se pôr. Como naquela noite de inverno, quando corria com todas as suas forças, Alexei correu para dentro da escuridão.
Valery e Ryan estavam prestes a atravessar a rua. Correndo como um louco em direção a Valery, que atravessava a faixa de pedestres sem olhar para trás, Alexei ignorou o olhar de Ryan, que se virou ao ouvir o barulho dos sapatos batendo no chão. Desesperado, ele estendeu a mão e agarrou a barra do casaco de Valery.
—Lerusha.
Ele soltou um suspiro ofegante. Por um momento, a expressão de Valery ficou obscurecida pela névoa de sua respiração branca.
—Não vá. Eu estava errado, então, por favor…
Seu corpo tremia tanto que ele não conseguiu terminar a frase de uma vez. ‘Não consigo viver sem você. Por favor, fique ao meu lado.’
—Eu…
—Pare com isso.
Uma voz fria veio de Valery. Ele olhou para a mão de Alexei, que segurava seu casaco, com uma expressão inexpressiva, então, ele recuou. Quando Alexei tentou não soltá-lo e segurá-lo de qualquer maneira, Valery falou em um tom baixo, mas claro. Seu rosto estava tão rígido que, por um momento, pareceu que ele estava atuando e como se tivesse decidido agir dessa maneira, Valery falou friamente.
—Eu sabia que você não tinha consciência, mas não sabia que era a esse ponto.
Uma grande mão se estendeu como se não quisesse ser tocada e arrancou violentamente a mão de Alexei.
—É repugnante e horrível, então, por favor…

—Desapareça da minha vida.
É o fim.
Com um gesto como se estivesse sacudindo um inseto, Valery empurrou Alexei. Embora a força não fosse o suficiente para derrubá-lo, ele recuou sem resistência. Ele poderia ter se agarrado e pressionado Valery com dureza, como sempre fazia, mas, estranhamente, achou difícil fazer isso. Durante o tempo em que Valery o odiou, ele mostrou várias reações, mas Alexei nunca o tinha visto com um rosto tão vazio como agora.
Como se Valery nem mesmo tivesse vontade de odiá-lo, como se ele não quisesse dar a Alexei nenhum tipo de atenção, ele o olhou daquela maneira.
Antes mesmo de Ryan falar, Valery se virou e deu as costas a Alexei. Como se estivesse lidando com um estranho, ele se afastou friamente e começou a caminhar com Ryan. Observando os dois pares de pés atravessarem as linhas brancas da faixa de pedestres, Alexei permaneceu parado na borda. O semáforo verde ficou vermelho e viu as costas de Valery enquanto ele atravessava para o outro lado, mostrando um mundo claramente dividido.
Logo, a escuridão caiu.
A nevasca, que começou a soprar furiosamente, parecia mostrar que o breve momento de primavera foi apenas uma exceção passageira, trazendo de volta o frio habitual de Saratov. O ar, que havia sido aquecido, congelou novamente. Enquanto as pessoas corriam, desviando da neve, Alexei continuou a observar Valery, que se afastava cada vez mais até se tornar um ponto distante.
Como um cão que espera que seu dono volte, mesmo depois que Valery desapareceu, ele permaneceu no mesmo lugar por um longo tempo. Então, quando percebeu que não importava quanto tempo esperasse, Valéry não voltaria, Alexei soltou um suspiro congelado.
A neve que havia se prendido aos cílios, piscando lentamente, derreteu e deslizou levemente pelas bochechas. Apenas ao sentir esse toque, Alexei conseguiu finalmente se mover.
