Carlyle e Ash estavam hospedados na ala mais ao sul da mansão. No primeiro andar, onde o sol batia mais, ficavam os quartos dele e Ash, cercados por um anexo com uma biblioteca, um salão de baile e uma sala de jantar.

—Você dormiu bem, Lyle?

Era uma manhã assustadoramente perfeita, tão bela que parecia irreal.

Esfregando firmemente as sobrancelhas grossas e franzidas de frustração, Carlyle pensou em como lidar com esse sono incontrolável. Ele concordava, em parte, com Ash sobre a importância de dormir para o bem de Bonbon, mas doze horas de sono era demais. Dormir tanto era algo para animais sem ocupações, não para humanos.

Para alguém que sempre seguiu um ciclo bem ajustado e controlava tanto o corpo quanto a mente, essa situação era difícil de aceitar. Ele se sentia até mesmo irritado com o corpo, que parecia trair sua vontade.

Mas isso era apenas um desejo, não uma verdade garantida. Se Carlyle Frost fosse uma pessoa mais adequada, isso não estaria acontecendo. Como seria bom se ele pudesse esperar por Bonbon apenas com pura alegria.

O toque suave acariciando as costas de Carlyle foi acalmando seu coração aos poucos. Como ele estava se sentindo ansioso sem nenhum motivo específico, Carlyle decidiu tranquilizá-los.

Enquanto as duas pessoas sociáveis decidiam como se chamar, Carlyle, movido pela fome, pegou os talheres primeiro. Apesar da sonolência avassaladora, ele conseguiu controlar o estômago revirado de alguma forma. Embora o sono fosse necessário para o bebê, o enjoo matinal não era.
—A comida que Ash procura é sempre deliciosa, então você não precisa se preocupar.
—Fico feliz em ouvir isso. Eu estava um pouco nervoso.
Ele realmente não parecia nervoso.
Ash sempre parecia tão calmo e relaxado que, às vezes, Carlyle nem percebia quando ele estava preocupado. Saber disso foi uma surpresa adorável.
—É verdade.
Agradecido pelo esforço e preocupação de Ash, Carlyle pensou na melhor resposta que poderia dar. Após uma breve reflexão, ele falou sinceramente:
—Mesmo que Ash queimasse a comida, ainda assim seria deliciosa.
Agora que pensava nisso, Nicholas costumava queimar a comida assim. Uma foto que Kyle havia enviado a Carlyle muito tempo atrás passou pela sua mente, na foto, que seu irmão havia enviado para ele a legenda dizia que era a primeira refeição que Nick tinha preparado para o homem, no prato havia um pedaço de carvão irreconhecível. Quando Carlyle perguntou o que era, Kyle respondeu que eram batatas assadas, mas mesmo que olhasse com muita atenção, eram batatas muito queimadas.
Na época, Carlyle ficou com pena de Kyle por estar comendo aquilo e sugeriu que ele apenas provasse e jogasse fora. Mas, agora, que pensava nisso, entendia Kyle. Se Ash preparasse um boeuf bourguignon queimado, quão adorável seria isso?
A imagem de Ash em tal situação fez com que Carlyle sorrisse suavemente. Ash levantou ligeiramente as sobrancelhas e balançou a cabeça, como se dissesse que isso jamais aconteceria.
—Não me faça parecer um mau marido. Para o meu marido grávido, nem mesmo a lua seria suficiente, eu nunca te daria comida queimada.
—O Sr. Ash está absolutamente certo.
Mayam rapidamente concordou e assim, a refeição começou. Enquanto Mayam e Ash discutiam sobre como preparar o jantar, Carlyle lentamente engolia a comida. Quando a náusea surgia, ele bebia água discretamente e, de alguma forma, conseguiu terminar sua porção.
Depois de finalmente terminar de comer, ficou claro que ele não poderia ficar mais tempo na sala de jantar. O cheiro constante da comida poderia fazê-lo vomitar tudo o que havia se forçado a engolir, então ele se levantou, usando o banheiro como desculpa.
—Com licença por um momento.
Nesse instante, seus olhos encontraram os de Ash. Vendo o olhar atento de Ash, Carlyle se perguntou se ele havia percebido seu desconforto. Fingindo calma, ele esperou um pouco, e então Ash falou.
—Eu prometi não me separar de Lyle…, vamos juntos?
—Acho melhor não.
Ash riu em voz alta diante da resposta que vinha até com um pouco de seriedade.
—Vá e volte logo, Lyle.
Carlyle saiu da sala de jantar lentamente, sem mostrar pressa, e foi para fora. O ar ainda um pouco frio do final de abril acalmou seu estômago. Ele caminhou brevemente sob a sombra das árvores, respirando profundamente e olhando para o jardim. Então, silenciosamente, desejou que a comida do jantar fosse agradável para o seu estômago.

Ao contrário do que Carlyle esperava, Bonbon parecia ser uma criança de paladar exigente. O cardápio do jantar daquela noite não repetia nenhum prato do almoço, mas a náusea persistiu. Mesmo quando não comia nada, sentia uma leve sensação de enjoo que o fez até mesmo parar de beber água de repente.
Infelizmente, os enjoos matinais continuaram. Na manhã do dia da visita do Dr. Luther, ele acabou vomitando até a água que tinha bebido. O enjôo foi tão intenso que, enquanto ele se dirigia ao outro banheiro para que Ash não percebesse, suava frio.
Antes de fazer o ultrassom, Carlyle teve uma conversa em particular com Luther. Ele era a única pessoa com quem ele podia falar honestamente sobre sua condição, então contou sobre os enjoos matinais.
—Você está dizendo que sente náuseas, mas ainda assim está comendo?
Após descrever a série de sintomas e como estava lidando com eles, essa foi a resposta que recebeu. Carlyle assentiu brevemente à pergunta que parecia buscar confirmação, e Luther começou a verificar mais detalhadamente.
—Até agora, houve algo que você realmente quisesse comer?
—Não.
—Como você analisaria essa náusea numa escala de 1 a 10?
—Como seria um exemplo de 10?
—Seria como se a sensação de vomitar não desaparecesse o dia todo, a ponto de ser difícil comer qualquer coisa.
—Nesse caso, seria cerca de 9.
—Com que frequência você tem vomitado?
Carlyle contou mentalmente. Logo após comer, ele conseguiu suprimir a náusea, mas ao beber apenas água, vomitou três vezes hoje.
—É difícil estabelecer um padrão. Na prática, acabei vomitando algumas vezes hoje, mas até então, eu os suportava.
—……Você não disse que não havia nada que conseguisse comer?
—Sim, como pode ver pelo cardápio compartilhado, não havia ingredientes repetidos, mas não tinha nada que sentisse vontade de comer.
Luther parecia confuso. Durante toda a conversa, ele anotava os sintomas rapidamente no prontuário e, após uma breve reflexão, perguntou novamente.
—Você também sente náuseas quando está caminhando ou fazendo outras atividades?
—Sim.
—Então, você está se forçando a comer.
Com um tom de certeza, Carlyle questionou:
—Mesmo que seja suportável, isso ainda pode ser considerado se forçar?
—Seu corpo certamente se esforçou para digerir os alimentos. Pelo bem do bebê, você está se forçando a comer algo que seu corpo não consegue engolir. Seu corpo é bastante resistente, mas você está comendo e ainda perdendo peso, só pode ser que está fazendo isso com grande esforço. Normalmente, já teria surgido um problema.
Era difícil discordar, então ele permaneceu em silêncio. Embora as palavras fossem verdadeiras, a nuance parecia estranha, como se Luther estivesse afirmando algo já conhecido.
Percebendo a expressão de desconfiança, Luther balançou a cabeça e explicou a Carlyle.
—Vocês dois definitivamente compartilham o mesmo sangue. A Sra Alice também teve os mesmos sintomas. A senhora Mayam percebeu que isso estava acontecendo a algum tempo e me avisou. É por isso que uma babá experiente é tão importante.
Não se importava de ouvir que se parecia com a sua mãe. Na verdade, isso até lhe fez sentir um pouco melhor, como se Carlyle tivesse herdando parte dela, apesar das suas inúmeras falhas. Luther olhou para Carlyle, que aceitou a situação com resignação.
—Não é hora de aceitar isso. Não há necessidade de suportar nada. A coisa mais prejudicial para você agora é o estresse. Tentar comer enquanto sofre é mais prejudicial do que útil, então vou prescrever um remédio para os seus enjoos matinais.
—Não quero remédios.
Quando Carlyle recusou firmemente, Luther sugeriu outra alternativa, como se já esperasse por isso.
—Então, a partir de agora, procure algo que lhe agrada para comer, mesmo que tenha que procurar por todos os alimentos do mundo.
—Mas de qualquer forma, os sintomas melhoram após a vigésima semana de gestação? Eu só preciso suportar mais um pouco.
—O simples ato de suportar já é estressante, jovem mestre. Seu bebê está recebendo nutrientes do líquido amniótico, então evite alimentos que lhe causem desconforto. Deixe o resto ao seu critério.
Embora fosse aconselhável seguir o conselho médico, Carlyle queria alimentar Bonbon apenas com o melhor. Ele se perguntou se isso acontecia porque ele era um alfa, e sua expressão se endureceu involuntariamente.
—Preciso informar ao Sr. Jones sobre isso. Tenho certeza de que você está escondendo isso dele.
—Você não sabe que Ash está cozinhando para mim pessoalmente? Por favor, fique quieto.
—Normalmente, é responsabilidade do marido cuidar do parceiro grávido, então, por favor, deixe-o fazer isso com prazer. O Sr. Jones ficaria mais chateado se descobrisse que você estava escondendo isso dele. Perder a experiência de sair correndo no meio da madrugada para comprar o que o marido quer desesperadamente comer seria uma pena, não acha?
Carlyle expressou sua insatisfação. Com as sobrancelhas franzidas, ele olhou para Luther com um olhar severo. Mas o médico estava firme.
—Vou te dar um dia, para que você mesmo possa contar a ele. Será melhor do que eu ligar amanhã para contar.
Não havia espaço para negociação. Sentindo-se cada vez mais confrontado com essas situações recentes, ele impôs uma condição.
—Eu vou falar, então, por favor, evite fazer comentários adicionais.”
—Eu ligarei para dar um oi amanhã.”
—Nesse caso, por favor, o convença da necessidade de fazer uma caminhada. Estou tendo dificuldades até mesmo de andar pelo corredor devido a sua ansiedade.”
Carlyle estava caminhando muito pelos corredores ultimamente, porque acabava adormecendo sempre que sentava em algum lugar. Ash continuou insistindo em abraçá-lo, dizendo que ele estava se exercitando demais, mas Carlyle teve que recusar educadamente várias vezes para não causar transtornos na mansão dos avós.
—Oh, isso também é muito importante. Vou dar um jeito nisso hoje.
Luther sorriu desconfortavelmente enquanto fazia anotações em sua prancheta. Depois da consulta, ao sair do consultório, Ash estava esperando por ele no corredor. Havia uma expressão leve de preocupação em seu rosto enquanto ele se apoiava na parede e olhava para a porta.
—Doutor, como está Lyle?
—Parece que está tudo bem. —Luther disse isso e depois olhou firmemente para Carlyle antes de acrescentar: —Por enquanto. —Carlyle engoliu sua frustração com a pressão implícita. Ash alternou a cabeça para os lados, percebendo a tensão entre eles.
Para interromper a conversa desnecessária, Carlyle decidiu mudar de assunto de forma direta. Ele pediu a Luther em um tom profissional, como se estivesse dando instruções comerciais.
—Vamos fazer o ultrassom. Ash já esperou por muito tempo.
—Bem, eu entendo.
