Ash não conseguia dormir há dias. Isto porque a cama em que ele se deitava sozinho parecia fria. A estação era primavera e a temperatura no quarto se mantinha precisamente 25,5°C, mas o ar era frio. Ash, que tinha estado deitado de lado sem expressão e olhando apenas para o teto, acabou se levantando. O sol já estava no alto, e ele havia passado mais uma noite acordado.
Varreu nervosamente seus cabelos desarrumados e saiu da cama. Ele caminhou até a porta e verificou o painel de temperatura. Olhou fixamente para o número, que estava precisamente ajustado a 25,5 graus C. Era a temperatura preferida de Carlyle. Um número que Carlyle gostava de manter, independentemente da estação do ano.
Um leve sorriso apareceu em seu rosto sem expressão. Considerando apenas o rosto inexpressivo e o pequeno número de palavras, suas exigências eram quase inexistentes, mas Carlyle certamente tinha suas preferências. Ao vê-lo combinar números assim, qualquer um pensaria que ele só gostaria de fazer coisas limpas e organizadas, mas ele não se importava de rolar a passos largos quando cavalgava ou fazia outras atividades.
Carlyle adorava beber e tinha muitas bebidas preciosas em sua coleção. Era uma pena que ele não ficasse bêbado com facilidade. Se o fizesse, talvez, pudesse ver um Carlyle mais solto. É com isso, Carlyle falasse sobre seus verdadeiros sentimentos.
Esfregando o painel de aquecimento, que ele não tocava há algum tempo, Ash elevou a temperatura. A temperatura corporal de Carlyle era muito mais baixa que a de Ash, mas o quarto estava frio e a cama vazia sem ele. Os vestígios de Carlyle estavam por toda parte, de modo que os anos em que não conseguia dormir com alguém ao seu lado no passado, foram um fuscados.

Dada a forma como ele fez as malas e partiu sem arrependimentos, pensou que o homem ficaria bem. Não houve contato até agora. Era ridículo esperar isso. Por que ele entraria em contato com a pessoa que pediu o divórcio? A ideia de que ele mesmo convenceu Carlyle, que havia expressado sua recusa quanto a separação, a se divorciar, era em si uma decepção.
Pensava em Carlyle todo tempo e em nenhum momento ficou entediado. Não importava o que estivesse fazendo, Carlyle vinha à mente. Em meio a isso tudo, o tempo passou agonizantemente devagar. Não estava em condições de trabalhar, mesmo que preferisse fingir esquecer tudo se afogando nos negócios, sequer conseguia ir ao escritório.
Ele não queria ver pessoas e só contatou sua parceira no escritório. Ignorando os e-mails e telefonemas que se amontoavam, Ash vagueou sem rumo pela casa. Toda vez que ele lembrava da figura de Carlyle em um espaço vazio, o arrependimento o inundava como se quisesse deixá-lo louco.
Desejava nunca ter dito isso.
Foi uma decisão que levou um mês de reflexão. Depois de considerá-la milhares de vezes, eu estava convencido de que seria o melhor para Carlyle. Também pensei que seria uma decisão positiva para mim a longo prazo. Carlyle não teria mais que agir por obrigação, e eu não teria que fazer exigências egoístas em nome do amor.
Mas….. se eu soubesse que seria tão doloroso, não deveria ter dito nada. Talvez pudesse ter esperado até que Carlyle falasse primeiro sobre o divórcio. Ash percebeu, depois de experimentar isso por um tempo, que sentir tal dor ao lado de Carlyle era incomparavelmente melhor do que sentir-se doendo sem ele.
Pela enésima vez, Ash passou um dia sem sentido remoendo os acontecimentos daquela noite em sua mente. Foi a primeira vez em sua vida. Ele havia conhecido e namorado muitas pessoas, mas nunca havia sentido tanta dor depois de um término.
Um ano foi pouco tempo comparado com o tempo que ele gastou com seus ex-amantes no passado. Ash claramente amava a todos e se dedicava ao tempo que passava com eles. Portanto, não é como se o peso da separação fosse diferente. Eles apenas se separaram quando a hora chegou.
Mas por que sinto que estou ficando louco?
Ash, que estava parado meio atordoado, percebeu tardiamente que havia ficado parado por muito tempo no mesmo lugar depois de aumentar a temperatura. O estúdio era de propriedade do próprio Ash e sua colega Mackenzie, e os prazos de entrega podiam ser combinados se desejassem. Entretanto, não queria incomodá-la com sua situação pessoal. Não estava doente. O divórcio seria uma circunstância especial, mas o engraçado é que foi Ash quem começou tudo isso. Não havia desculpas.
Ele se obrigou a continuar trabalhando por cerca de três horas. Mas logo descartou o que havia feito, Ash jogou a cabeça para trás. O teto com acabamento de madeira veio à vista. Por ser a casa onde sua mãe morava, o projeto não foi alterado a menos quando era extremamente necessário, então o esboço básico da casa permanecia com traços do passado.
Embora tenha vivido sua vida longe da presença do seu pai, tinha muitas lembranças agradáveis ali. As tardes ensolaradas em que brincava de esconde-esconde, as manhãs em que regava o jardim com a sua mãe, as noites quando sentavam com a sua irmã para fazer tortas.
Ash queria encontrar a alegria novamente neste lugar onde a tristeza pairava. Seu pai já deve ter esquecido, mas essa casa foi o lugar que sua mãe deu de presente para ele. Porque estava perto de sua rua favorita em Notting Hill.
Ele usou isso para me fazer ameaças irracionais, mas… olhando para trás agora não foi tão ruim. Pude conhecer Carlyle por causa das ameaças do meu pai.
Então se lembrou da primeira vez em que se encontraram. Gostou dele à primeira vista e ao mesmo tempo o considerou a pessoa mais aristocrática que já conheceu. No início sentiu que seria difícil se aproximar dele, mas quanto mais conversavam melhor a pessoa parecia.
Para ser sincero, ele não era uma pessoa tão interessante em comparação com meus ex-amantes, mas a maneira como ele me ouvia em silêncio era linda. Claro, em termos de aparência, ele era a pessoa mais perfeita. Embora essa não tenha sido a razão final pela qual decidi me casar.
Havia muitas razões para a proposta. Talvez o principal motivo fosse um senso de responsabilidade. Tinha suas próprias circunstâncias, mas Carlyle parecia mais preocupado com o casamento. Depois de saber sobre o Marquês Frost, pode entender o motivo.

Tais coisas pareciam ter despertado sua curiosidade. Quanto mais o conhecia, mais curiosidade sentia sobre ele. Me perguntava o que havia de errado com ele para aceitar com tanta facilidade se casasse com alguém como eu e, o que ele estava pensando cada vez que me via? Depois disso, fiquei curioso sobre outras coisas. Só queria saber mais sobre Carlyle Frost. Foi o que eu fiz.
Meu coração palpitava toda vez que ele fazia uma pergunta fofa com um rosto inexpressivo que demostrava que nem uma gota de sangue escorreria mesmo que ele fosse golpeado com uma faca. Foi incrível descobrir que uma pessoa tão inteligente e bela não tinha feito quase nada na vida. Adorei como ele se lembrava de tudo o que eu dizia, e como enrijecia ao menor toque.
Era lindo e adorável, e eu queria que todas as primeiras vezes das coisas que ele nunca tinha feito fossem minhas
Ash piscou. Ele olhou para trás na época de seu casamento, que ele pensava ser devido a um senso de responsabilidade, mas tudo o que restava eram seus próprios sentimentos. Se nos conhecêssemos em circunstâncias normais, naturalmente iríamos a um encontro e começaríamos a namorar e talvez….

Foi o som da campainha que trouxe Ash que estava perdido em pensamentos de volta à realidade. Ash voltou a si com o som claro. Suas expectativas foram ao limite, imaginando se a pessoa atrás da porta era aquela em quem ele vinha pensando.
Colocou rapidamente um cardigã e desceu as escadas correndo. Sentiu uma pontada de arrependimento por não ter se vestido corretamente. Poderia ter ajeitado o cabelo. Ele chegou a ter vários pensamentos incaracterísticos.
Chegando à porta da frente como se estivesse correndo, Ash a abriu rapidamente. Seu jeito calmo habitual havia desaparecido há muito tempo. Ele não queria deixá-lo esperando por mais tempo. Assim que abriu a porta, Ash chamou o nome pelo qual estava esperando sem verificar quem era.
— Lyle?
Esqueceu naquele momento que já não podia chamá-lo pelo apelido. Foi somente quando viu a pessoa de pé do outro lado da porta aberta que caiu em si.
— Ash.
Não estava ao nível dos seus. Teve que inclinar a cabeça para baixo para fazer contato visual com o homem de cabelos castanhos. Não era um rosto familiar, mas era um rosto conhecido.
— Hazel?
Apagando o sorriso do rosto, Ash se encostou na porta em um ângulo. Não foi um comportamento educado, mas ele também não era bem-vindo. Havia um número limitado de pessoas autorizadas a visitar o lugar. Hazel Wright na frente dele era um convidado indesejado.
— Como soube deste lugar?
Não era como se eles tivessem um relacionamento ruim nem nada parecido. Hazel era um sênior de Ash na escola. No entanto, não era o suficiente próximo para convidá-lo para sua casa. Eles e Mackenzie costumavam andar juntos quando jovens, mas depois da formatura, eles naturalmente se afastaram quando Hazel foi trabalhar em outros setores. Assim, eles não eram amigos, não eram colegas. Eles eram mais como estranhos.
— Você não está sendo um pouco aberto demais sobre sua antipatia? É triste. Já não te vejo há muito tempo.
— É estranho que você esteja aqui quando eu nunca lhe dei um endereço.

— Não é estranho, não me interprete mal. Macky me contou. Ela estava preocupada por não ter tido notícias suas, então eu apenas apareci porque estava por perto.
Ele disse a Mackenzie que estaria trabalhando em casa e quando não teve notícias dele, ela ficou preocupada. Esperou que o nome Carlyle viesse à tona e ignorou o resto. Foi um comportamento irresponsável. Eu sei. Depois de mandar Hazel para casa, terei que entrar em contato com Mackenzie. Ash espremeu seus olhos e soltou.
— Então o certo deveria ser Mackenzie ter vindo e não o sênior.
Ele disse que a pessoa deveria ir embora de uma forma concisa. Não estava com vontade de falar com ninguém neste momento. Se não fosse por um mínimo de cortesia e habilidades sociais, Ash teria batido a porta e entrado.
Não tinha tanto tempo livre. Também não queria expor sua sensibilidade a ninguém. Como todo ser humano, ele tinha seus momentos ruins de estresse e mal humor, mas não queria deixar que outros testemunhassem isso.
— Está tão ocupado que agora nem pôde me dar um pouco de atenção. Tem que cumprir um prazo até a próxima terça-feira.
Os prazo eram desconhecidos, a menos que você fosse um informante. Ash ergueu uma sobrancelha, imaginando que Mackenzie havia contado a Hazel sobre isso. Hazel falou antes que ele percebesse.
— Eu sei porque desta vez o cliente é minha empresa.
Na verdade, Mackenzie parecia ter mencionado. Ele acabou não prestando muita atenção porque foi na época em que estava começando a considerar o divórcio. Ash lavou seu rosto seco e pediu desculpas à Hazel.
— Sinto muito. Devo ter parecido irresponsável? Não se preocupe, vou me certificar de que isso não interfira no meu trabalho. Agora mesmo tenho alguns assuntos pessoais para resolver, então estou um pouco sensível, por isso me comportei de maneira rude. Peço desculpas.
— Eu não estava tentando fazer você dizer isso….
Hazel escolheu suas palavras por um tempo, e depois riu.
— Como sempre, você continua distante.
Não foi a primeira vez que ele ouviu essas palavras. Porque o próprio Ash queria isso. A pessoa que você mantém mais perto de você deve ser apenas a pessoa amada. Faça seu melhor quando os ama, e mantenha uma certa distância quando termina. Os amigos são amigos, os amantes são amantes.
Foi o que aprendi vendo meus pais. Não queria criar conflitos com uma proximidade desnecessária. Também não havia razão para ser responsável por alguém que tem a ideia errada sobre seus sentimentos. Embora precisasse ser educado e gentil, mas era só isso.
— Com licença, você poderia me oferecer uma xícara de chá? Não nos vemos há alguns anos
— Que…….
Uma palavra de recusa subiu ao topo da sua garganta assim que se lembrou que aquela costumava ser a casa que dividia com Carlyle. No entanto, rapidamente se deu conta que estava sozinho na casa. Além disso, tinha acabado de ser rude com Hazel.
Parecia que uma xícara de chá tinha que ser suportada em troca de um pedido de desculpas. Decidiu ao menos fazer isso, pois ele era alguém a quem Ash poderia ter saudado com prazer se não estivesse neste estado.
Ash relutantemente abriu a porta. Hazel entrou com uma saudação.
— Obrigado. Eu também tenho um horário a cumprir, então não vou incomodá-lo por muito tempo.
Ao fechar a porta atrás dele, Hazel olhou em volta da casa com cautela. Teria sido educado mostrar os arredores, mas ele não queria que ninguém visse o espaço sem Carlyle.
— Está um belo dia, então vamos beber no jardim?
— Sim, claro.
Hazel concordou prontamente. Depois de conduzi-lo ao quintal, Ash simplesmente foi preparar o chá. Enquanto esperava a água ferver, Ash olhou fixamente para o vidro panorâmico da sala de estar. As rosas floresciam mais belamente a cada dia, mas ele não ficou particularmente feliz. Coisas bonitas sempre o faziam sentir-se melhor, mas…….
Notando o som da água fervente, Ash preparou o chá. Rapidamente, ele dedilhou os vários chás no armário. Seus dedos folheiam os saquinhos e escolheram um chá preto comum que Hazel beberia, depois o próximo com o invólucro azul que Carlyle costumava saborear. Foi apenas um capricho.
Ash, que geralmente bebia café com leite, nunca havia experimentado o chá de Carlyle. Ao contrário dele, que gostava de coisas doces, Carlyle bebia chá preto puro. Havia uma certa elegância na maneira como ele bebia seu chá, então Ash adorava assistir.
Como ele era uma pessoa que bebia chá com frequência, havia muitos utensílios para preparar os chás para ele. Ele esqueceu de levá-los. Os dois tinham ido às compras juntos, então ele sabia bem quanto custava, cada utensílio. Por um momento, Ash se perguntou se poderia usar isto como desculpa para entrar em contato com Carlyle. Foi tão patético que ele rapidamente desistiu.
Enquanto preparava a bandeja de chá e saía para o jardim dos fundos, Hazel olhou em volta. Não era tão agradável quanto a vista da sala de estar, mas o quintal tinha seu próprio encanto. O gramado era bem cuidado e convidava a deitar-se, com uma figueira proporcionando uma sombra perfumada.
Nos dias em que Carlyle trabalhava em casa, Ash frequentemente fazia pequenos móveis ali. Então, às vezes quando ele tirava uma soneca na grama, Carlyle colocava um cobertor sobre ele. O cobertor cheirava ao aroma característico do homem. O cheiro agridoce era exclusivo de Carlyle.
— Ouvi dizer que você se casou? Parabéns, o lugar tem a sua cara.
Hazel começou a parabenizar Ash quando ele entrou. Não fazia sentido agir como se estivesse passado um bom tempo com um antigo amigo. O próprio Ash sabia que ele mesmo estava em um estado muito sensível, então ele precisava se acalmar.
— Obrigado.
Ele não estava em condições de ser felicitado, mas não podia dizer a ninguém o que havia acontecido. Ele disse obrigado e permaneceu com um pequeno nó na garganta. Na verdade ainda não tinha acabado, pelo menos não no papel, mas logo estará depois da festa, que está marcada para amanhã. Deveria dizer então, há outra pessoa que estou me separando de Carlyle? De verdade?
— Ouvi dizer que você é casado com um alfa, o que, dada sua personalidade, não soa como uma relação normal……. Ele é como a sua paixão de infância da qual você falava na faculdade?
Ash esfregou o queixo, aparentemente lembrando-se de algo parecido do tempo em que estiveram juntos. O próprio Ash tinha se esquecido disso.
— Não.
— Sério? Eu olhei para a foto e pensei que talvez fosse porque parece muito com o rosto que você costumava descrever.
Pensando bem, havia uma foto deles no corredor. Sabia que o homem era um bom observador, mas ele devia ter olhado minuciosamente para a foto.
— Você ainda é meticuloso, sênior. Mas não.
— Mmm….. Eu lembro que você disse cabelos escuros e olhos acinzentados. De qualquer forma, ele é muito bonito. Parabéns.
As palavras de Hazel fizeram com que Ash pensasse. Era uma sala escura, sem luzes e haviam passado mais de 20 anos, por isso ele não podia realmente se lembrar do rosto da pessoa que havia beijado com clareza. A silhueta que ele conseguia lembrar era, em si mesma, um borrão.
Só conseguia se lembrar de seus cabelos, seus olhos cinzentos refletindo a luz tênue que entrava pela janela, e sua expressão. Os lóbulos das orelhas avermelhados e os olhos surpresos ainda estavam lá. A primeira festa aristocrática a qual tinha ido em sua vida foi tão ruim que mal fazia questão de se lembrar, mas o beijo daquela noite deixou a segunda metade da festa carimbada em sua mente.
O lugar… foi o escritório do Marquês Gordon, onde também havia conversado com Carlyle.
Então algo passou pela sua cabeça. A conversa que teve com Carlyle naquela noite chuvosa de repente me veio à mente. A conversa que tiveram sentados juntos no parapeito da janela.
“…… Dei meu primo beijo aqui.”
Na época, não pensava muito nisso porque era estranho ter uma queda por alguém cujo nome não conhecia. Lembrou de como estava Carlyle que respondia facilmente as perguntas um tanto maliciosas. Ele estava olhando para mim.
Não era uma boa situação para mergulhar fundo, então ele simplesmente deixou passar. Nem pensou em sobrepor isso ao comentário que Carlyle fez de que nunca havia saído com um Alfa. Era certamente uma memória importante e a razão pela qual Ash havia decidido se relacionar com Alfas, mas ele não ousou assumir que essa pessoa poderia ser Carlyle.
— Você esqueceu?
Quando Ash ficou em silêncio, Hazel perguntou com uma voz brincalhona. Ash balançou a cabeça com os olhos intrigados. Não pensou que fosse verdade, mas queria confirmar ao mesmo tempo.
— Não, não é bem assim.
— Hum, você disse que foi o seu primeiro amor. Ao ouvir isso, eu e Macky o provocamos muito. Era engraçado ouvir você dizer que alguém cujo nome você nem conhecia foi o seu primeiro amor.
Ash resistiu ao impulso de querer perguntar a Carlyle imediatamente. Mas se o encontrasse amanhã, teria que esclarecer isso. Se essa coincidência inesperada for verdade…..
— Hazel, posso te perguntar uma coisa?
Ash passou uma mão pelo seu cabelo. Não sabia se foi porque ele o lembrou de algo que já havia esquecido, ou se foi porque não se importava se o homem conhecia a história deles, mas queria pedir conselhos a Hazel.
— Claro.
Hazel sorriu gentilmente. Mackenzie teria adorado isso. Eles se afastaram quando Hazel escolheu uma indústria diferente. Ash também não tinha estado em contato desde então, então eles se separaram naturalmente, mas Mackenzie tinha pedido que ele entrasse em contato com Ash, então eles devem ter tido uma conversa.
— Posso me agarrar a alguém que não me ama?
Hazel fez uma cara preocupada. Ele parecia cauteloso como se tivesse notado a situação sem nem mesmo perguntar. Depois de pensar por um momento, Hazel fez a pergunta.
— Ele não te ama, mas vocês se casaram?
— Houve algumas circunstâncias.
— Você não é o tipo de pessoa que aceitaria isso.
Eu sei. Por isso propus um acordo.
— Se o seu parceiro não gostasse de você não teria se casado.
— Lyle estava em meio a uma situação.
Além disso, Carlyle colocou os desejos da sua família acima de sua própria vontade. Uma resposta auto-depressiva a seu pensamento anterior lhe veio à mente. Em circunstâncias normais, eles nunca teriam se encontrado. Se não fossem as condições cinematográficas de um casamento arranjado, eles apenas teriam passado um pelo outro, e ele estaria….
Com outra pessoa….
Seu estômago estava agitado. O ressentimento brotou contra o oponente inexistente. Ele puxou da cadeira e sentou-se à mesa. Sentindo sede, engoliu o chá já meio frio. O sabor amargo do chá em sua língua o fez sentir um pouco melhor. Era bom pensar que isto era o que Carlyle bebia todos os dias.
— Bem, eu não sei muito sobre. Não é minha especialidade, então não posso dizer nada sobre isso……..
Hazel se aproximou lentamente. Hesitando, ele colocou uma mão no ombro de Ash.
— Porque o Ash Jones que eu conheço é o tipo de pessoa que pode fazer as pessoas que não gostam dele passarem a amá-lo. Você se aproximava de todos com ousadia quando precisava. Eu não o vejo há algum tempo, então não posso dizer com certeza, mas está sendo um pouco cauteloso demais.
— ….Eu pareço assim?
— Sim, mas não parece ruim, é só… você parece gostar muito dele. Talvez por isso tenha sido mais cuidadoso e não disse o que tinha a dizer? Foi isso que eu e Mackenzie fizemos.
Olhou para ele com as palavras inesperadas de Hazel.
— Não posso dizer que seja a mesma situação que a sua, mas foi por causa disso que nos separamos. O emprego que me foi oferecido pouco antes de começar a trabalhar era mais adequado do que eu pensava, mas Mackenzie pensou que eu iria para a mesma empresa. Eu não queria brigar por causa disso, então adiei e lhe disse depois de ter tomado minha decisão.
— Parece tão estúpido agora, mas na época eu estava realmente com medo de lutar. Era um assunto importante e nós íamos entrar em conflito, e por causa disso, ficar com nossos sentimentos feridos e terminar. Se tivéssemos conversado melhor um com o outro e seguido em frente, talvez as coisas tivessem sido diferentes, certo?
Ash acenou com a cabeça, pois as palavras eram inegáveis. Pensando bem, ele nunca havia conversado com Carlyle sobre nada incômodo. Carlyle sempre fazia o que ele pedia e nunca demonstrou não querer. Deve ter havido algo que ele não gostou, mas era difícil adivinhar seus verdadeiros sentimentos porque ele é uma pessoa que normalmente não demonstra.
Então, isso tornou tudo ainda mais chocante. O fato de alguém que escondia tão bem seu sentimento deixar transparecer seu nojo a ponto de vomitar. Não podia sequer perguntar se ele estava bem enquanto o via passar por ele e fechar a porta. Eu não queria me machucar.
— Talvez o melhor seja perguntar.
— Sim, isso seria melhor do que se arrepender.
— Obrigado.
Alguns pensamentos foram esclarecidos. Sempre o amei tanto que pensei que nunca conseguiria me recuperar se me machucasse, mas por causa disso acabei tomando a decisão tola de evitá-lo. Isso poderia acontecer um dia, mas eu não preciso passar por isso sozinho.
Não, eu deveria ter trabalhado mais para evitar que isso acontecesse…….
— Você conversou com sênior ?
— Mais ou menos.
A julgar pelo sorriso de Hazel, o resultado não parecia tão ruim. Sua mente se acalmou um pouco e Ash sorriu.
— Obrigado, Hazel. Meus pensamentos clarearam um pouco. Também vou entrar em contato com Mackenzie.
Ash colocou uma mão sobre as costas da mão de Hazel em seu ombro. Estava grato pelo conforto, mas não queria entrar em contato com alguém que não fosse Carlyle. Quando ele estava prestes a afastar a mão gentilmente, ouviu a porta se abrir atrás deles. Tanto os olhos de Hazel como os de Ash se voltaram para trás com o barulho repentino.
Um homem de terno podia ser visto através da pequena abertura na porta. Assim que viu a figura rapidamente desaparecer, Ash levantou do seu assento. Seu corpo reagiu mais rápido que sua mente.
— Hazel, espere um minuto.
Dizendo isso, Ash abriu a porta. Ele avistou a parte de trás de Carlyle, e uma onda de nostalgia passou pela mente dele, enquanto observava as costas definidas se afastarem sem olhar para trás.
— Lyle?
Pensou que estava ficando louco de saudades. Tinham sido apenas alguns dias, mas parecia uma eternidade.
— O que está fazendo aqui?
Você veio me ver? Ele mal resistiu à vontade de perguntar. Espero que sim. Com a pergunta de Ash, Carlyle parou. Suas pernas longas, revestidas por um terno, ficavam paradas no lugar. Carlyle olhou para frente por um tempo, depois se virou lentamente.
Carlyle estava inexpressivo. Mas foi um pouco diferente. Ele obviamente não tinha expressão no rosto, mas parecia com raiva.
— …… Desculpe.
Carlyle falou com a mesma voz que ele usou quando se encontraram pela primeira vez. Ash piscou com as palavras que pareciam dar uma sensação de distância. Depois de pensar por alguns segundos, Ash decidiu que Carlyle poderia ter entendido mal sua pergunta. Afinal, aquela ainda era a casa de Carlyle, e podia ser lido como uma forma de dizer que ele estava no lugar errado.
— Não, não foi isso que eu quis dizer, eu queria dizer…….
Achei que você não viria aqui de novo, e estou feliz que tenha voltado. Como eu poderia não gostar? Estive pensando em Carlyle o tempo todo enquanto estava acordado.
— Disse isso porque estou feliz em te ver, Carlyle.
Não teve vergonha de dizer o que sentia. Carlyle olhou fixamente para Ash sem dizer nada. Fazia muito tempo que eles não encaravam o olhar um do outro, e Ash não tinha certeza do que fazer. Ash Jones, que normalmente lidava bem com palavras, ficou tão desnorteado quanto um garoto prestes a sair num primeiro encontro.
— Eu não esperava que você viesse hoje. Deixou alguma coisa para trás?
Havia muitas outras coisas que poderia ter dito, mas acabou dizendo isso. Porque algo estava errado com a sua cabeça.
— Se estiver tudo bem, você gostaria de um pouco de chá?
Ash falou sinceramente para Carlyle, que não respondeu. Ele parecia está com pressa.
— Vamos tomar uma bebida, está bem?
Carlyle desviou o olhar para o pedido de Ash, que parecia mais uma súplica. Um rosto indiferente, que nem levantou uma sobrancelha, olhou de volta para Ash. Cílios longos piscaram e Carlyle finalmente abriu a boca.
— Parece que você tem um convidado.
Ash olhou de relance para Hazel, de quem havia esquecido momentaneamente. Hazel olhou para ele e Carlyle, meio confuso, com um olhar perplexo no rosto.
— Ah, Hazel…
— Vou recusar o chá.
A rejeição vazou entre os lábios bonitos que ele queria desesperadamente tocar. Ele nem teve tempo de explicar quem a pessoa era.
— Só passei por aqui porque tinha algo para te dar.
Logo Carlyle desviou o olhar, aparentemente desinteressado.
— Estou aqui para devolver a chave. Isso é tudo.
Carlyle estendeu a mão com uma voz fria usando um tom comercial. Seu pulso estava ligeiramente exposto sob o luxuoso treno perfeitamente ajustado ao comprimento de seu braço. Ash olhou fixamente para a chave que descansava em sua mão pálida.
Sentiu o chão debaixo dos seus pés ceder. Seu coração estava batendo descontroladamente. Ele não a pediu de propósito porque esperava secretamente que Carlyle não a devolvesse, mas o homem estendeu as chaves como se ignorasse seu desejo.
Para ser honesto, ele esperava isso. Se perguntava se Carlyle o surpreenderia. Queria que ele dissesse que o amava e que se recusasse a se divorciar dele por razões pessoais. Parecia ridículo querer isto depois de todas as coisas que tinha dito, mas Ash queria uma confirmação como uma criança ansiosa.
— Você não precisa vir à festa amanhã. Já acabou de qualquer maneira, então não parece bom ver um ao outro. Também enviarei os papéis do divórcio amanhã.
Mas quando ele viu um lado de Carlyle que nunca havia visto antes, uma frieza que o homem nunca havia mostrado, Ash percebeu que era uma explosão de frustração. O Carlyle que sempre o ouvira, que sempre manteve a boca fechada, não estava ali. O Carlyle que estava vendo era na verdade um Carlyle que ninguém mais podia ver.
— Carlyle, espere um minuto.
Seu coração estava acelerado. Sentiu que ele iria embora, por isso o chamou apressadamente.
— Por que você de repente tomou tal decisão?
Você obviamente me convidou para ir à festa com você. Ele percebeu que sua pergunta parecia ruim então engoliu as palavras.
— Não foi uma decisão repentina.
Carlyle recuou. Seu coração se apertou com a atitude do homem que parecia estar rejeitando seus avanços. O desespero que beirava o terror tomou conta dele. Não importava o que Ash fizesse, ele não estava aqui para ouvir. Sentindo que o estava perdendo, Ash deu um passo à frente. Desesperadamente, ele se estendeu e agarrou o pulso de Carlyle.
— Nós deveríamos ir juntos. Não sei por que você mudou de ideia. Há algo de errado?
Caso contrário, não haveria razão para isso. Carlyle não era de se opor ao que ele dizia. Pelo menos o Carlyle Ash conhecia.
— Não é problema seu, Sr. Jones.
No entanto, a resposta de Carlyle, que se seguiu, contou a realidade da situação. Seus olhos se arregalaram com as palavras inesperadas. Enquanto isso, Carlyle manteve seu olhar para baixo e fixou o olhar na mão de Ash em seu pulso. Ele sentiu imediatamente uma força o apertando. Com movimentos cuidadosos e frios, Carlyle soltou a mão de Ash.
— Não estamos mais em um relacionamento.
As palavras que se seguiram ecoaram em seus ouvidos. A mão que havia segurado Carlyle voltou à sua posição original enfaticamente. Não houve nenhuma mudança no rosto de Carlyle, quando ele disse: Não é problema seu. Ash não disse nada. Apenas permaneceu ali em silêncio.
Quando Carlyle terminou de falar, ele colocou suas chaves na mesinha do corredor. Ding. Um atrito frio soou, e Carlyle se virou. O negócio estava feito, ele virou e percorreu o corredor como um homem sem quaisquer arrependimentos.
Ash permaneceu congelado no lugar enquanto observava suas costas recuar na distância. Queria correr atrás dele naquele instante, mas suas pernas não se moviam. Ele sufocou com um suspiro de ressentimento e remorso contra si mesmo. Tinha o coração cheio de preocupações. Não achava que a atitude de Carlyle em relação a ele fosse nada de especial.
Demorou semanas para que ele o chamasse pelo primeiro nome.
O nome que voltou mostrou claramente a relação entre os dois. O resultado para o próprio Ash, não para mais ninguém, foi horrível, e ele não conseguiu se mover por um longo tempo.
