É extremamente difícil um Alfa dar à luz uma criança. Já era raro uma fêmea Alfa engravidar como sua mãe, Alice, e as chances de um Alfa macho engravidar eram tão pequenas quanto as de dar à luz a um Alfa dominante.
Embora essas raras probabilidades estivessem concentradas dentro do sistema aristocrático britânico, talvez não pudesse ser considerada um milagre na situação em que Carlyle se encontrava. Não, certamente não. Não seria nada parecido, mas sim uma fonte de boatos.
Nenhum ômega nobre se casaria com um ser tão falho. Só a sentença era ridícula: um homem divorciado com um filho? Para se casar novamente, teria que abortar o bebê.
Luther disse que o aborto espontâneo era possível mesmo com pouco risco ou estresse. Com tais probabilidades quase impossíveis, era natural que fosse difícil segurá-lo.
Talvez eu até já tenha abortado.
Estaria mentindo se dissesse que não estava estressado com os recentes acontecimentos. Carlyle passou esses dois dias repleto de pura pressão. Quanto mais ele pensava em sua conversa com Ash, mas concluía que não era uma situação ruim… mas, mesmo assim, não conseguia tirar isso da cabeça. Foi assim que ele se sentiu em um passado distante, quando não conseguia alcançar Ash.
Carlyle não conseguia definir emocionalmente este sentimento. Emoção e expressão eram as coisas mais difíceis para Carlyle Frost. Assim como um órgão não utilizado se degenera, as emoções de Carlyle se enfraqueceram ao longo de seus 32 anos, deixando apenas o que era necessário.
Pensando melhor, deve ter sido estranho e difícil para Ash. Pessoas semelhantes costumam se atrair, mas não havia ninguém ao redor de Carlyle que fosse tão vibrante e colorido como Ash. Talvez fosse por isso que ele não sabia distinguir o que Ash realmente desejava. Uma pergunta que Ash havia feito há algum tempo passou pela mente de Carlyle.

Será que a resposta “eu não odeio isso” foi errada? Carlyle retornou para aquele momento em sua mente centenas de vezes. Ele sentiu uma certa intuição, mas não soube dar a resposta certa. Perceber as intenções da outra parte ao mudar a direção do contrato era algo que Carlyle fazia frequentemente, mas ele nunca havia aprendido a lidar com um conflito emocional.
No entanto, se houvesse uma resposta melhor naquele instante, ele com certeza teria dito. Um forte sentimento de arrependimento se abateu sobre ele. Carlyle se virou e foi para casa. Ele não estava na casa principal em Mayfair, mas em uma residência particular em Hampstead Heath. Quando foi transmitida a notícia de seus dias de folga através da secretária, seu pai o contactou diretamente. Incapaz de dizer que estava doente, Carlyle usou descaradamente Ash como desculpa. Carlyle experimentou uma sensação indescritível quando Ash disse estar doente e precisava ficar ao seu lado.
As circunstâncias da mentira eram patéticas. Não era nem mesmo uma mentira bem articulada. A verdade é que esse era um truque tão superficial que até mesmo um único telefonema de seu pai para Ash o entregar. Carlyle imaginou sua reação centenas de vezes. Não importava quantas vezes ele pensasse sobre isso, a conclusão era a mesma. Ash tentaria assumir a responsabilidade. Porque ele é atencioso. Era extremamente gentil, o que confundia Carlyle. Mas de qualquer maneira…
A razão pela qual o casamento entre os dois aconteceu foi porque Ash se sentiu responsável. Caso contrário, não havia razão para se casar. A verdade era que ele queria estar em um casamento romântico com um grande amor. Então, se ele descobrisse que Carlyle estava grávido, iria desistir do divórcio imediatamente.

Carlyle levantou-se de seu assento quando sentiu a dor dentro dele piorar. Não tinha disposição para se vestir como de costume. Sendo assim, vestindo uma camisa simples, ele pegou as chaves do carro e saiu de casa. Medo e desespero atingiram Carlyle.

A voz calma de Luther foi abafada pelo som do batimento cardíaco. Foi uma sensação ambígua sentir a pequena vida tomando conta lentamente do que parecia ser um espaço vazio. — É claro que o mais importante é o bem-estar do jovem mestre. Como sabe, Alice passou por várias crises durante o parto de vocês dois, então tenho certeza de que pode ser ainda mais difícil para você. Acho que seria melhor discutir e decidir sobre o mais rápido possível.
Luther acenou com a cabeça, de acordo. Passando uma mão pelo cabelo, que estava ligeiramente desgrenhado devido a sua saída apressada, Carlyle respondeu silenciosamente. Por fim, se levantou e saiu da mesa de exames. Foi então que Luther acrescentou.
— Mas acho que não vai incomodar sua família. Acho até que todos vão gostar.
Carlyle, que havia pisado no chão, virou-se para olhar para Luther. Luther, como sempre, estava com um sorriso no rosto. Aquela expressão o fez lembrar de Ash, mesmo que essa pessoa não se parecesse nada com ele.
Carlyle estava cético em relação às palavras de Luther. Meu avô é um conservador, e minha mãe não podia se importar menos comigo. Meu pai poderia se importar, mas duvido que ele olhasse a gravidez de um alfa masculino com bons olhos. Kyle ficaria feliz. Mas ele poderia não gostar se soubesse que era perigoso.

A situação parecia ser perigosa o suficiente para que o médico repetisse isso algumas vezes para Carlyle, que costumava ser muito mais saudável do que a maioria das pessoas. Mas não estava surpreso, dado o estado que estava seu corpo.
— A senhora tomou a decisão dela após refletir por um bom tempo. Então pense bem.
Carlyle piscou os olhos diante da menção de sua mãe. Na mente de Carlyle, Alice Frost era uma pessoa tão racional quanto seu avô, por isso era intrigante que sua mãe tenha tomado tal decisão. Na verdade, a própria escolha de sua mãe em se casar com seu pai tinha sido questionável.
— A decisão dela não pareceu muito sensata.
Com a breve expressão, Luther riu.
— Foi o que todos disseram. Ninguém imaginava que uma jovem tão discreta teria uma decisão dessas.
O olhar de Carlisle voltou-se para Luther assim que o ouviu.
— A razão pela qual a jovem tomou tal decisão em um momento em que não era essencial ter filhos, foi porque ela amava muito Jonathan.
— Meu pai não é o tipo de pessoa que a obrigaria a fazer isso.
— Claro. Eu assisti à oposição dele. Oh, não me interpretem mal. Depois que a jovem tomou a decisão, Jonathan ficou muito feliz e esperou pelo jovem mestre mais do que qualquer outra pessoa.
Foi uma sensação estranha ouvir alguém falar de seus pais. Carlyle estreitou os olhos à medida que se sentia estranhamente envolto em sentimentos incomuns.

Sorrindo e curvando a cabeça brevemente, Luther deixou a sala primeiro. Talvez para dar tempo a Carlyle para pensar. De pé na sala de exames vazia, Carlyle olhou fixamente para a tela da máquina desligada, contemplando um momento que, uma vez passado, era pouco provável que voltasse.
Ele simplesmente não conseguia decidir.
Carlyle estava confuso, diferente do passado, no qual já havia tomado decisões importantes centenas de vezes. Uma emoção que às vezes ele até mesmo duvidava que existisse, vinha se aferrando a Carlyle ultimamente. Em meio ao choque de razão e emoção, Carlyle finalmente admitiu isso.
Não quero abortar a criança.
E Carlyle não conseguia entender por quê.

Estar no hospital fez com que ele se sentisse doente, então Carlyle rapidamente saiu de lá. Sentado em seu carro, com as mãos no volante, ele pensou em seu destino. Por hábito, pensou no trabalho e se deu conta que estava fazendo uma pausa. Ele tentou pensar em outros lugares onde poderia estar, e percebeu que não havia outro lugar para ir além de casa. Engolindo um suspiro, ele ligou o carro e dirigiu.
Queria ir a qualquer lugar, mas não estava em condições de fazê-lo. Agora que havia aceitado que não queria abortar o bebê, o melhor seria se manter o mais seguro possível por enquanto. A ilusão, que surgiu de repente, encheu a mente de Carlyle como um impulso incontrolável. Ele é um homem que se alegra com as pequenas coisas, então poderia realmente ficar feliz. Na primeira vez que me viu sorrir um pouco, ele agarrou minha bochecha e não me largou… me pergunto se ele ficaria feliz de alguma forma ao ouvir isso.
Em retrospecto, meu tempo com Ash nunca foi entediante ou desconfortável. Estava repleto de emoções estranhamente desconhecidas. Às vezes, os dias estavam cheios de tremores nervosos, e em outros, eu me sentia aconchegado como nunca me senti com ninguém antes.

A estranha tensão e a sensação de calafrio, não era necessariamente confortável, então Carlyle não conseguia pensar nisso como um sentido de bem-estar.
Mas neste momento, em que estava completamente separado dele, mais do que seus pais ou seu irmão, era em Ash Jones que ele pensava. Carlyle gostava de estar com Ash ainda mais do que com a família com a qual ele havia passado tanto tempo.
