— Seu parceiro de casamento foi decidido.
Essas foram as primeiras palavras que Carlyle Frost ouviu assim que chegou na mansão ao ser chamado por seu avô. O homem foi bastante indiferente ao dizer essas palavras ao neto, que viajou do Catar para Londres por oito horas. Após uma batida cuidadosa, Carlyle, que abriu a porta e estava prestes a cumprimentá-lo, fechou a boca. A fadiga que se acumulou até aquele ponto deslizou pela sua nuca.
— Como vai, vovô?
Ignorando a sensação de exaustão que percorria sua cabeça, Carlyle o cumprimentou. Diante da voz calma informal, seu avô finalmente o encarou. Nem uma única expressão apareceu no rosto seco. Mesmo que fosse uma situação familiar, seu pescoço estava especialmente tenso hoje. Talvez fosse devido ao que acabara de ouvir.
… que um novo parceiro foi decidido.
Carlyle remoeu a sentença interiormente. Era algo para o qual vinha se preparando durante toda a vida como membro da família Frost. Embora sempre tenha pensado que a outra pessoa seria decidida no momento certo, se sentiu estranho quando se deu conta que isso se tornaria uma realidade. Seria certeiro dizer que aquilo não parece real.
Por um momento se perguntou quem era, mas logo percebeu que isso não importava. Seu avô provavelmente escolheu o alvo que melhor se encaixava. Possivelmente, seria um ômega de família nobre que ajudaria a família a se revitalizar. Poderia ser alguém que conheceu em uma reunião social ou alguém de quem já ouvira falar.
Como se tivesse captado os pensamentos de Carlyle, seu avô foi direto ao ponto, sem responder aos seus cumprimentos. Ele olhou para Carlyle antes de abrir a boca.
— Ele é um parceiro bom demais para você.
Carlyle abaixou a cabeça inexpressivamente diante da fala de seu avô. Se meu avô está dizendo talvez… não, claro que é assim. Carlyle Frost não era um genro vantajoso socialmente falando. Nascido como neto de seu avô Arthur Frost, Carlyle era insignificante. A única vantagem que tinha era a de ser filho de uma marquesa e conduzir os negócios de seus pais. Afinal, ele era apenas alfa comum.
Os Alfas Dominantes, que representavam apenas 1% da população mundial, apareciam principalmente em linhagens aristocráticas, especialmente no Reino Unido. Por conta disso, era considerado natural ter Alfas Dominantes entre a aristocracia britânica. Superior em todos os aspectos aos alfas comuns, os Alfas Dominantes eram essenciais para a restauração da linhagem familiar e a nobreza atribuía grande importância a preservação de linhagens puras compostas por esses alfas excepcionais.
Pode soar estranho na era moderna, onde a hierarquia de classes desapareceu, mas na Inglaterra isso era um direito adquirido. Pelo menos no mundo de Carlyle, era assim.
Devido a essa obsessão com a linhagem, os casamentos dos nobres giravam em torno de negociações matrimoniais que poderiam produzir um alfa dominante. Um bom parceiro matrimonial era assim: sempre pertencia às famílias com alfas dominantes, e famílias de grande renome, que tinham produzido alfas dominantes por gerações.
Seu próprio avô, Arthur Frost, tinha ressuscitado à família por ser alfa dominante, mas sua esposa só pôde dar à luz a uma mulher alfa. Felizmente, seu querido irmão e segundo filho, Kyle, nasceu um alfa dominante, então a raiva de seu avô em relação aos seus pais havia desaparecido, mas isso não mudava as características alfas de Carlyle. Durante o período do Rut, tinha relações com ômegas aleatórios estabelecidos pelo seu avô, não podia sequer encontrá-los novamente para evitar o surgimento de sentimentos desnecessários.
— Sim.
— Então você deve se esforçar para que não haja coisas desagradáveis como separação.
— Levarei isso em mente.
Seu avô enfatizou repentinamente, como se tivesse ordenando, então franziu a testa com a resposta de Carlyle e voltou seu olhar para a mesa. O avô pressionou os papéis contra a mesa com o dedo indicador e os virou para Carlyle.

Carlyle se aproximou lentamente de seu avô. O som de passos ecoava pesadamente no chão de madeira. Seus passos pesados pararam na frente da mesa, e ele estendeu a mão e pegou os papéis.

Suas mãos estavam rígidas. Forçando-se a desviar o olhar, Carlyle voltou a ler a pesquisa sobre a outra pessoa. Ocupação: Designer, pessoa experiente trabalhando em um grande estúdio em Londres. Depois de folhear os prêmios e empregos, Carlyle pulou para a história de sua família. Após ler a história da família rapidamente, chegou a uma conclusão.
Ash Jones era meio aristocrata.
Seu pai era um plebeu, então ele usava o sobrenome Jones, mas sua falecida mãe era uma parente colateral do Marquês de Winchester. O nome era inédito no meio social porque ele era mestiço de sangue francês e britânico, mas definitivamente tinha o sangue de um Marquês correndo em suas veias. Seus recursos financeiros eram bons, pois seus avós maternos tinham extensas propriedades em Marselha e Paris e administravam uma joalheria.
Contudo, não pertencia a uma família tão grande para que Carlyle Frost tivesse de se casar. Ainda mais sendo com um alfa ao invés de um ômega.
No momento em que tomou consciência disso, sentiu um vislumbre de vergonha. Teve vergonha, porque embora Carlyle sempre tivesse faltado aos olhos do seu avô, se perguntava se falhou o suficiente para ser tratado desta forma. Um sentimento que havia esquecido de repente veio à tona. A ultima vez que viveu ferozmente para não ser um fardo para sua família passou pela sua mente.
Ficou acordado toda a noite, para aprender tudo o que podia para, de alguma forma, acompanhar os alfas dominantes. Aprendeu tudo o que o seu avô queria que aprendesse para não desapontá-lo, e felizmente tinha um bom nível de inteligência e não tinha dificuldade em aprender. Desde tenra idade, tentou ser útil enquanto aprendia sobre os negócios do seu pai, e nunca sequer deu sinais de estar doente, mesmo que estivesse com dores, porque tinha medo que a sua mãe fosse repreendida pelo seu avô devido a ele não ser bom o suficiente.
Ainda assim, suas deficiências inatas eram inevitáveis.
— O pai dele foi muito ganancioso quando entrou na mansão de um nobre para falar sobre esse casamento. Tinha apenas dois alfas, e queria falar comigo sobre os seus antepassados aristocratas. Os plebeus parecem não poder controlar seus hábitos parasitários.
O avô trouxe uma história. Como um bom neto que nunca desafiou as palavras do seu avô, Carlyle engoliu calmamente e o escutou em vez de dizer o que estava sentindo.
Contudo havia uma forte objeção que ele não conseguia tirar da mente. Tinha de ter a certeza sobre isto. O seu avô provavelmente não iria gostar, mas teria que responder.
— Nunca ouvi falar de um encontro entre dois Alfas masculinos.
Seu avô não negou.
— É um absurdo, certo?
Era uma voz de claro desprezo.
— No entanto, não posso ignorar a conexão que o seu noivo tem com o marquês Gordon. Ele tem coisas que não temos. Esse homem é suficientemente próximo para o Marquês Gordon ser seu guardião, por isso, faça o seu melhor para agradá-lo.
Finalmente, a pergunta foi respondida. O Marquês Gordon era um homem com quem seu avô sempre tinha tentado ter conexões, o homem tinha sido altamente influente na política durante gerações. Ele também nutria uma amizade próxima com alguns duques. Era um acordo valioso para o seu avô, cujo aumento da influência da família era de extrema importância.
— Disseram que se vocês conhecessem e gostassem um do outro, poderiam ir em frente com o casamento. As coisas que ele exige são ultrajantes, provavelmente porque tem alguma influência, mas seja paciente.
A conversa chegou ao fim. Carlyle apertou a papelada que estava segurando para bloquear as refutações e perguntas inúteis. A identidade inesperada do seu noivo provocou uma grande confusão interior.
— A reunião será daqui há dois dias. Você deve estar em Londres, informarei os detalhes à sua secretária. Pode ir.
O acordo foi transmitido. Seu avô virou a sua cadeira de lado como se o assunto tivesse terminado. Carlyle, que tinha estado olhando para o perfil sem emoção durante vários segundos, deu um passo atrás. Baixou gentilmente a cabeça para o avô, que não olhou para ele.
— Até logo.
O comprimento não voltou. Seu avô sempre foi assim. A menos que ele viesse à mansão com seu irmão Kyle, o homem sempre agia dessa maneira. Apesar do vislumbre da expressão do homem estar gravado em seus olhos mesmo que quase não se encontrasse com ele, está visão hoje foi frustrante.
Sentiu como se sua garganta estivesse bloqueada e o seu estômago revirado. Pensou que era por causa do ar pesado. Pensando que estaria tudo bem sair, ele silenciosamente deixou o quarto de seu avô. Ao fechar a porta, respirou o ar fresco que circulava pelo vasto corredor.
Contudo a sensação de sufocamento não dava sinais de ir embora, e pressionava ainda mais forte o peito de Carlyle.

Um vento frio soprou. Londres em maio, quando o céu sombrio desaparecia, era como um conto de fadas para onde quer que olhasse. A grama verde brilhante chamou sua atenção. Os galhos das árvores balançavam firmemente criando grandes sombras ao longo do parque, e todas as pessoas que ficavam dentro de casa durante o inverno saíam.
Carlyle mal sabia para onde olhar na atmosfera estranhamente livre e consultou o relógio. Faltavam 10 minutos para o horário marcado. Não era tarde demais, então não podia culpar a outra pessoa, mas ele não conseguiu conter o ressentimento em relação a pessoa que lhe foi prometida.
Não era culpa do seu prometido. Isso simplesmente decorreu do desconforto da reunião em si. Apesar dos seus esforços para entender isso, Carlyle sentiu-se irrealista acerca da situação em que se encontrava, nunca imaginou se relacionar com um Alfa.
Ash Jones pediu para encontrá-lo em Primrose Hill. Marcou o horário através da secretária, para o dia de hoje. Provavelmente iriam fazer uma refeição, mas foi insatisfatório desde o início ter de se encontrar em tal lugar. Essa sensação desagradável dobrou quando ele percebeu que a outra pessoa não era do tipo que chegava antes do horário.
Não é como eu.
Carlyle balançou a cabeça. Sentir emoções desnecessárias era a última coisa que Carlyle precisava em sua vida. Esse tipo de sentimento cria um fator de risco e causa conflitos. Desde jovem ele liderou os negócios da família e não se incomodava mesmo quando conhecia pessoas extremamente rudes, mas Ash Jones o abalou estranhamente antes mesmo de se conhecerem.
Provavelmente porque era a primeira vez que acontecia. Claro que sim, afinal não era comum dois Alfas noivarem. Pelo menos era assim no mundo de Carlyle. Mesmo numa época em que todos os gostos começavam a ser respeitados, a vida dos aristocracias permaneceu sempre no passado. Os casamentos que não produziam filhos eram inúteis no seu mundo.
Independentemente de ser útil ou não, Carlyle não gostava de Alfas em primeiro lugar. Ele estava certo disso porque, apesar de ter crescido em meio a Alfas bem longe dos Ômegas, nunca houve um momento em que ele se sentisse atraído por eles. Os alfas têm o instinto de desconfiar dos feromônios uns dos outros e da presença, o que é bem comum na maioria das vezes.
De qualquer modo, não gostou romanticamente de ninguém em sua vida.
Seu vislumbre de ressentimento passou. Sua opinião era, de qualquer forma, inútil. Se o seu avô queria que este casamento acontecesse, Carlyle tinha de fazer o que lhe foi ordenado. Só tenho que ser agradável e me dar bem com esse alfa…..
Cansado de pensar nisso, Carlyle decidiu clarear a cabeça. Olhando para o relógio novamente, estava bem na hora do encontro. Com o rosto seco, ele olhou em volta. Ele conhecia a maior parte da fisionomia e do vestuário da outra pessoa a partir de uma fotografia. Ele tinha uma aparência marcante, por isso não seria difícil de o detectar.
Era hora do almoço, então Primrose Hill estava cheia de gente comendo no gramado. Podia ver cestos de piquenique e cães correndo ao seu lado. Apesar do fato de estar a acontecer bem na sua frente, se sentia distante como se estivesse noutro lugar.
Apesar de ter nascido e vivido em Londres durante mais da metade da sua vida, a razão pela qual se sentia desconfortável neste lugar era provavelmente porque Carlyle nunca esteve em um lugar como este por conta própria. A Londres que ele conhecia era principalmente composta por arranha-céus cinzentos e janelas de vidro fosco. Deitar calmamente na grama e comer em um momento que poderia estar fazendo tantas outras coisas não era a atividade favorita de Carlyle.
— Você chegou cedo.
Carlyle virou-se para o som da voz atrás dele. A primeira coisa que viu foram dois olhos de cores diferentes. Os olhos, que eram de uma saturação completamente diferente da vista na foto, continham as cores azul e cinza. Seus olhos brilhantes se curvaram suavemente enquanto captavam a luz do sol.
— Olá, meu nome é Ash Jones.
Uma voz suave e grave o cumprimentou calorosamente. Levantou levemente o olhar e olhou diretamente para os olhos belos. Carlyle, vendo um rosto branco com um sorriso brilhante, cumprimentou-o tardiamente.
— Olá.
Dando um passo para trás, ele disse educadamente. À medida que seu campo de visão se ampliou, pôde ver Ash Jones claramente. O homem mais alto que Carlyle era atraente o suficiente para manter seus olhos fixos nele. Um homem bonito com uma atmosfera que cativa os olhos antes mesmo de olhar mais de perto para suas feições. Uma estranha atmosfera que não poderia ser capturada em uma fotografia o cercava.
— Sou Carlyle Frost.
A resposta veio alguns segundos depois. Ele se aproximou de Ash como se estivesse próximo a um parceiro de negócios. Era um ato habitual, portanto não tinha significado. Um pulso pálido foi exposto sob a manga do traje.
Ash olhou para a mão estendida e inclinou a cabeça em um ângulo. Um olhar curioso brilhou em seus olhos, e Ash estendeu a mão. Ele agarrou a mão de Carlyle e apertou firmemente. A mão que parecia semelhante à sua era maior do que esperava, o seu aperto era um pouco mais forte e consistente do que o dele. Seu dedo indicador esticado roçou levemente o osso do pulso exposto de Carlyle sob a manga.
— Me chame de Ash.
Uma estranha sensação de cócegas se espalhou quando o homem tocou o osso proeminente do pulso. Carlyle enrijeceu o corpo ao sentir um formigamento estranho subir por seu braço. Ele nunca tinha tido este tipo de contato antes e acabou por recuar primeiro. Os olhos de Ash brilharam e dobraram-se enquanto ele observava.
— Não é muito cedo?
Ash continuou falando com naturalidade, como se já se conhecessem. Mesmo em público, Carlyle era bom em conduzir conversas, mas não tinha certeza de qual assunto era apropriado para esse tipo de reunião. Foi um erro não se preparar para isso.
— Se você quiser, podemos ir.
As palavras de seu avô, sobre parecer agradável para Ash, passaram por sua cabeça, e Carlyle respondeu gentilmente. Era um ato semelhante a negociar para conseguir o que deseja. Não havia nada muito difícil nisso.
— Não, podemos fazer Carlyle quiser.
Ash olhou para a expressão inexpressiva de Carlyle e balançou a cabeça. Carlyle ficou um pouco abalado por ele ter chamado seu nome casualmente, mas não demonstrou.
— Você já almoçou?
Ash sorriu gentilmente. Com um brilho vivido nos olhos ele não parou de sorrir. O cabelo moderadamente penteado caía suavemente sobre a testa, tornando a impressão de Ash mais suave.
— Ainda não. O Sr. Jones já comeu?
Ao ouvir o título de Sr. Jones, Ash sorriu e balançou a cabeça.
— Não. Eu quero comer com Carlyle.
Ele assentiu ligeiramente. Como um lugar estranho foi definido como ponto de encontro, os restaurantes próximos eram todos medíocres. Só havia sorveterias, cafés, lanchonetes e pubs, então teriam que caminhar um pouco para conseguir uma refeição decente.
Quando estava prestes a dizer que havia um lugar que estava procurando, Ash apareceu de repente na sua frente.
— Aqui.
Viu ele segurando algo em sua mão esquerda, mas……..
— Eu sou bom em cozinhar.
—…Você não precisava fazer isso.
Ash piscou um olho. Ele se aproximou alegremente e sussurrou no ouvido de Carlyle.
— Eu queria que você tivesse uma boa impressão.
A respiração tocou levemente o lóbulo de sua orelha e caiu. Carlyle recuou com a sensação estranha e Ash o seguiu.
— Então, devemos escolher um lugar para sentar?
Disse Ash com um rosto sorridente.
Ash escolheu um lugar debaixo de uma árvore moderadamente inclinada, colocou a cesta de vime onde a sombra era boa e tirou o cardigã que estava usando.
— Carlyle não gosta de sentar na grama?
Ele olhou para a grama. Devia ser um lugar sujo, mas Carlyle estava bem. Ele não teria feito isso voluntariamente, mas foi capaz de tolerar isso diante do seu companheiro.
— Está tudo bem.
— Vou ajudá-lo.
— Não.
Naturalmente, o impediu de colocar seu cardigã na grama. Não era familiar que alguém cuidasse dele assim, então sua voz soou um tanto seca.
— Verdade?
— Está bem.
— Eu não quero que suje seu belo terno.
Carlyle balançou a cabeça. Se sujasse o terno, era só comprar um novo.
— Basta comprar um novo.
Ash fez um barulho e riu.
— Eu sei. Carlyle é um aristocrata.
Depois de dizer isso como se concordasse, Ash dobrou o cardigã e o colocou na grama.
— Ainda assim, você pode usá-lo se quiser.
Ash sentou-se naturalmente na grama e pousou a cesta de piquenique. Foi estranho ver a cena se desenrolar na sua frente a pouco tempo atrás aquilo parecia uma cena de um mundo completamente diferente. Ele tirou quatro sanduíches ciabatta bem embalados da cesta.
— Eu não sabia do que Carlyle iria gostar, então fiz com ingredientes diferentes. Os restaurantes são bons, mas o tempo tem estado bonito ultimamente, então me pareceu bom comer admirando a bela paisagem.
O que acontecia pela primeira vez em sua vida era uma situação repentina. Não tinha passado pela experiência de comer em outro lugar que não fosse a mesma.
— Você realmente gosta de coisas assim?
Quando perguntou por não conseguir entender, Ash riu.
— Em dias como hoje quando está tudo muito lindo.
— Você parece fazer isso com frequência.
— Ver coisas bonitas me faz sentir bem.
Então seus olhos se encontraram. Sentindo-se um pouco estranho, Carlyle desviou o olhar, então pegou o que viu entre os sanduíches de Ash.
— Escolheu peru.
Ash assentiu para si mesmo e fez uma pergunta.
— Existe alguma comida que você não goste?
— Não há absolutamente nada.
O fato de ser reticente estende-se também à comida, por isso Carlyle não tinha uma preferência alimentar específica. Ash continuou o seu interrogatório.
— Você também come morcela?
— Sim.
Ash riu para si mesmo novamente.
— Carlyle é incrível. Então, o que você mais gosta?
Ash perguntou gentilmente sobre o que estava curioso. Era estranho para ele que o homem perguntasse tal informação privada e inútil, então Carlyle, inconscientemente, olhou para Ash novamente. Seus olhares se encontraram mais uma vez.
— Você pergunta esse tipo de coisa para todo mundo que vê pela primeira vez?
— Apenas no meu encontro.
Ao ouvir a palavra “encontro” a mão que segurava o sanduíche enrijeceu.
— …. Você disse encontro?
— Sim, hoje é nosso primeiro encontro.
Afinal, é um encontro com a pessoa com quem você vai se casar, então deveria poder chamá-lo assim….. Depois de pensar um pouco, Carlyle decidiu ir direto ao ponto. A forma direta de falar não era como os aristocratas costumam lidar com as coisas, mas não havia outra maneira porque ele não conseguia adivinhar o que Ash Jones queria.
— Se esse é o primeiro, quando será o último?
Com a pergunta de Carlyle, Ash riu haha. Depois de dobrar levemente os joelhos, ele colocou os cotovelos sobre eles, então Ash pressionou o queixo contra as mãos. Ele olhou para Carlyle estreitando os olhos.
— O que você acha Carlyle?
— Eu só …..
Carlyle prendeu a respiração. Ele não tinha escolha, então a resposta foi decidida.
— Não importa.
— Está tudo bem?
— Não tenho nenhuma objeção a esse casamento.
— Mesmo que você acabe se casando com um completo estranho?
Isso não é um casamento arranjado? Mesmo que o oponente não fosse Ash, é claro, isso era algo que Carlyle tinha que aceitar, então não havia nada de especial nisso. Carlyle assentiu sem mudar de expressão. Então Ash soltou um murmúrio, um som preocupado, e continuou.
— Como você sabe, não sou um nobre como Carlyle. Embora meu sangue esteja misturado, cresci não muito diferente do que qualquer pessoa comum. Mesmo que minha origem familiar seja um pouco diferente, as pessoas com quem convivo são todas normais.
— Isso significa que você não tem intenção de aceitar o casamento?
Nesse caso, as coisas se complicam. Carlyle começou a ponderar qual tipo de acordo deveria apresentar ao seu oponente para que ele aceitasse. Depois de um breve silêncio, Ash balançou a cabeça.
— É por isso que chamei de encontro. Acho que temos que nos conhecer para descobrir.
— O resultado será decidido depois disso.
— Você não acha que seria bom para mim e para Carlyle?
— Como disse antes, isso não importa para mim.
Então Ash olhou em seus olhos como se estivesse realmente surpreso. Os olhos azul e cinza claro que pareciam ter reduzido a saturação continuaram fixos em Carlyle. À primeira vista, eles pareciam semelhantes aos olhos cinzentos de Carlyle, mas os de Ash eram um pouco diferentes. Eram muito mais animados.
— Tudo bem se casar com alguém que você não ama?
A palavra amor soou muito estranha em seus ouvidos. Era uma palavra que ele não ouvia há muito tempo. Não se lembrava de ter ouvido tal coisa de sua mãe ou pai, só escutou isso algumas vezes quando era jovem de seu irmão mais novo, Kyle, que era o único que expressava isso.
Existe alguma emoção tão extravagante e mais desnecessária quanto o amor?
Se as decisões impulsivas de sua mãe e pai foram movidas pelo amor, Carlyle não queria conhecer tal sentimento. Como resultado, Kyle e ele nasceram, mas não sabia se a provação pela qual a mãe tinha passado valeu a pena. Especialmente quando deu à luz a ele.
Vendo a mãe ainda sendo odiada pelo avô, além de ser alvo de inúmeras fofocas em círculos sociais, Carlyle sempre sentiu que o sentimento de amor era desnecessário. Nunca amou ninguém nem imaginou amar. Se ele se casasse, respeitaria e apreciaria o seu parceiro, mas nunca lhe ocorreu que o amaria.
— Não sei se o casamento precisa de amor.
Carlyle disse lentamente.
— Desde que haja confiança e respeito, isso parece ser suficiente.
Ash que ouviu em silêncio as palavras de Carlyle, ficou perdido em pensamentos por um momento. Voltando a atenção para o sanduíche em sua mão, Carlyle sentiu-se desconfortável, o ambiente casual era extremamente embaraçoso. Os dois eram tão diferentes, ainda mais do que ele esperava. Em vez de detestar o oponente, ele se sentiu cético.
Não parecia que ia dar certo.
Era uma relação pessoal, não profissional, e Carlyle, embora pudesse fazer todo o resto, era inexperiente nisso. Teria sido diferente com um Ómega, mas com um Alfa tudo se tornou mais difícil.
— Desde que eu era pequeno, sempre quis me casar com alguém que amo.
Então Ash quebrou o silêncio. Carlyle se virou e olhou para ele novamente.
— Quero estar com alguém que mesmo depois de uma vida inteira juntos, sinta vontade de desfrutar de cada mísero segundo ao lado dessa pessoa.
O casamento de que Ash falou tão casualmente era completamente o oposto da situação que estavam vivendo. Então ele se perguntou porque o homem tinha concordado com isso. Por que a outra pessoa estava ali se pensava de tal maneira?
— Então… Acho que você fez bem em recusar.
Ash riu com o comentário bastante contundente.
— Eu acho.
Era ridículo que isto lhe fosse dito por um mestiço que nem mesmo era um nobre, ainda mais sendo um Alfa. O seu avô tinha lhe dito para ser agradável, mas ele não achava que isso fosse possível quando o homem sequer queria casar com ele.
Mas não podia desistir. Um pouco de orgulho não faria nenhum favor à sua família, ele pensou calmamente por um momento. Não é que totalmente impossível. A menos que tenha zero por cento de chance, tem de se tentar tudo para conseguir o resultado.
— No entanto, se você diz que estamos em um encontro, não é como se você estivesse pensando em casamento.
— Provavelmente.
— Posso perguntar por quê?
— É mais difícil encontrar um parceiro adequado do que eu pensava.
Ficou um pouco intrigado. Não parece ser o tipo de resposta que viria de um homem que acabara de contar sobre o seu amor fatídico. Além disso…… não é como se fosse do meu gosto, mas Ash Jones é uma pessoa que chama atenção. Não há maneira de ele não ter um amante.
— Além disso, existem algumas outras circunstâncias.
Ash acrescentou uma declaração significativa. Foi uma palavra passageira, mas Carlyle não teve dificuldade em reconhecer que era um motivo importante. Carlyle não acha que os dois estavam na mesma situação, mas seria motivo suficiente para que um homem que não parece estar interessado em casamentos arranjados viesse até ele. Se fosse esse o caso, então era o melhor. Ocorreu que poderia ser um negócio que valesse a pena fazer. Se os dois trabalhassem juntos.
— Parece ser um motivo importante.
Ash sorriu e piscou os olhos. Ele esfregou os lábios com o dedo indicador e acenou com a cabeça.
— Existe algo que você queira de mim?
— Não, não é bem assim. Estou procurando um caminho.
— Talvez eu possa ajudar.
Ash não recusou com um único golpe. Carlyle decidiu aproveitar esta oportunidade para escapar da sua posição de desvantagem.
— Posso não ser tão bom quanto o Sr. Jones, mas sei coisas que o Sr. Jones não sabe.
O homem à sua frente não parecia ter nada a ver com o mundo dos negócios ou tácticas de pressão, e se era esse o caso, não seria um problema difícil para Carlyle resolver.
— Não é tão bom?
Ash perguntou, estreitando os olhos. Carlyle manteve a boca fechada com o tom de incompreensão. Eu cometi um erro?
— Me desculpe se fui rude.
— Não, não é isso. Eu não acho que Carlyle é alguém que não parece bom o suficiente.
— Você não me conhece.
— Só de olhar dá para saber.
— Do que você está falando?
— Antes de qualquer coisa, você é bonito.
Ao ouvir a palavra bonito, Carlyle colocou uma expressão de surpresa. Embora ele não se considerasse muito bonito, Carlyle sabe como se parece objetivamente. Seria justo dizer que sua aparência não é particularmente falha. Diria que está acima da média, mas a impressão que passava não era boa. Com o seu queixo afiado e rosto sem expressão, ele mesmo achava que parecia frio e assustador.
Portanto, a expressão “bonito” foi a palavra mais distante entre as descrições que ouvia das pessoas. A altura também não é significativamente diferente da do oponente. Desde jovem, cuidou do seu corpo por meio de passeios a cavalo, esgrima e exercícios, então não era nem um corpo esguio. Ele era claramente um alfa.

A respiração fraca de Ash tocou sua nuca. Carlyle virou a cabeça com a tensão que aumentou involuntariamente.
— Você deve ter conhecido muitos Alfas.
— Sim.
É por isso que ele se comporta tão casualmente perto de outro Alfa? Ao contrário dos alfas normais que não gostam de estar perto uns dos outros, essa pessoa deve….
— Você é assim desde o começo?
— Não, não é assim.
Ash sorriu e moveu seu corpo. Em vez de continuar com a história sobre ele, Ash voltou ao tópico anterior.
— De qualquer forma, Carlyle é bonito e, ao contrário de mim, é um nobre com muito a fazer. Não diga que não é bom o suficiente.
— Em caso afirmativo, porque você não compartilha para que eu possa decidir se é algo em que posso ajudar?
Ash por um momento, ele que estava olhando para as pessoas sob a colina, abriu a boca depois de um tempo.
— Meu pai queria que eu fizesse isso.
Logo lembrou do que seu avô havia dito. A pessoa que intercedeu pelo casamento foi o pai de Ash Jones.
— Você não poderia ter recusado?
— Ele colocou muitas coisas em jogo então não pude recusar.
Ash sorriu casualmente, desta vez fazendo uma pergunta a Carlyle.
— Aconteceu algo assim com Carlyle?
Ele balançou sua cabeça.
— É algo para o qual venho me preparando desde pequeno.
— Mas mesmo uma pessoa como eu nunca ouviu falar de um nobre se casando com um Alfa.
— Não é comum.
— Casar com Alfa, que nem sequer é um nobre, não é exatamente a situação que Carlyle tinha em mente, certo?
Carlyle parecia um rapaz simpático com um sorriso no rosto, mas Ash foi rápido a reparar.
— Não importa.
Ele chegou a uma conclusão definitiva. Estava realmente tudo bem. Era algo para o qual vinha se preparando desde o momento em que nasceu, por isso estava fazendo o que tinha de fazer, independentemente de quem fosse ser seu companheiro. Com o tempo, acabou por aceitar que este era o seu valor. Era mais rentável para sua família usá-lo como um peão útil do que esperar que um Alfa comum casasse com um Ómega e produzisse um Alfa dominante.
— Então, que tal isso?
Ash disse enquanto ainda olhava para frente.
— Não acho que haja necessidade de se casar se as necessidades de Carlyle forem atendidas sem o casamento.
— O que quer dizer?
— Vamos dar um ao outro o que precisamos.
— ….?
— O meu problema não é assim tão difícil, só preciso de algum tempo, então porque não resolvemos o problema da Carlyle e acabamos com isso sem um casamento?
— … Não é tão simples assim.
— Então me diga. O que a família de Carlyle quer comigo?
Ao contrário de sua impressão suave, Ash não tinha medo de dizer o que queria.
— Eu vou ouvir tudo o que tiver a dizer. Mesmo que não estejamos vinculados pelo casamento. Posso até escrever um contrato, se quiser.
— Não parece um acordo justo.
— Mas não é melhor do que casar com uma pessoa que não se ama?
Conceitualmente era. Seu avô pode ficar mais do que feliz com isso. Se você obtiver apenas o que precisa e se conectar a outras famílias, para a família Frost, você obtém conexões entre as duas famílias. Mas se você perguntar se Ash Jones ganha alguma coisa com isso.
Era senso comum. O seu avô talvez fosse a favor do acordo. Desde que consiga o que precisa, e os conecte com a outra família, os Frost teriam suas ligações. Mas o que é que Ash Jones ganha com isso?
Estava confuso.
Era estranho que o nobre, Carlyle Frost, não tivesse nada para oferecer. Ash sorriu bem enquanto ele ponderava sobre o acordo desequilibrado, sentia como se estivesse se aproveitando do outro.
— Você só precisa me encontrar três vezes. Um desses encontros pode ser na casa da sua família, só tem que dizer a eles que estamos pensando em se casar.
— Por que três vezes?
— Acho que o meu problema será resolvido nesse período de tempo, então, porque não fazemos parecer que estamos fazendo progressos, e depois dizemos que não entramos em um acordo, e claro, como eu disse, vou ter a certeza de cooperar com o que Carlyle quiser fazer mais tarde.
O que seu avô queria era a conexão que Ash Jones tinha com Philip Gordon e os negócios que seus avós maternos tinham. Se tudo isso fosse garantido, Carlyle não tinha nada a perder.
— ….Você está bem com isso, Sr. Jones?
— Não se preocupe. Direi que foi um capricho meu. Não acho ruim ser um desordeiro de vez em quando. Não é?
Calculou uma série de variáveis e circunstâncias. Após alguns minutos de consideração chegou a conclusão de que seria mais conveniente para Carlyle se as condições fossem especificadas por escrito. Não havia razão para recusar.
— Tudo bem. Mas não acho que seja necessário falar assim. Não quero causar problemas.
— Tudo bem, meus avós maternos dizem que tudo bem não importa o que eu faça.
Ficou intrigado com o seu tom aparentemente despreocupado. Desde o momento em que o conheceu, sabia que ele era o oposto completo de si. Então pensou que tinha sorte. Não era o que esperava, mas pensei que seria o melhor já que provavelmente não se daria bem com alguém tão diferente dele. Se fosse um ómega teria concordado com o casamento, mas como era um Alfa ele não sabia como lidar com isso.
— Então, já que conversamos um com o outro sobre o que nos intrigava, vamos almoçar agora?
Ash, que estava evocando a atmosfera, sussurrou de brincadeira.
— Eu vim aqui esperando ver como Carlyle avaliaria minha comida.
Ash rapidamente mudou de assunto para que a história séria de antes não pudesse ser lembrada. Ele tirou água mineral e água com gás da cesta.
— Você gosta de água mineral ou com gás? Pensei em trazer álcool, mas não conhecia o gosto de Carlyle. Preciso encontrar Carlyle depois de hoje.
Olhou para a mão que estendia alternadamente a água na garrafa de vidro. Olhando para o recipiente de água com gás, Carlyle colocou o dedo na garrafa.
— Obrigado.
Ash gentilmente envolveu os dedos de Carlyle quando ele estava prestes a pegar a garrafa. Por um momento fugaz, seus dedos se tocaram, e a sensação de formigamento se espalhou e logo desapareceu junto com o toque da mão. Ash, que entregou a garrafa de água, disse com um sorriso brilhante.
— Está bom.
— O que?
Quando fez a pergunta do nada, Ash tocou levemente a garrafa de água com gás deixada em sua mão
— É um gosto incomum.
Então, depois de cobrir o chão com um pano xadrez e colocar a cesta de piquenique em cima, ajeitou todo lugar como se estivesse arrumando uma mesa. Quando estava tudo pronto Ash colocou os sanduíches sobre ela.
— Nós poderíamos nos encaixar melhor do que você pensa.
Ash sussurrou exatamente o oposto do que Carlyle pensava.
