Quando Ash regressou da viagem, estava mais fresco do que quando partiu. Ao contrário de Carlyle, que não queria se queimar, a sua pele clara estava maravilhosamente bronzeada e o seu rosto estava mais vivo. Diferente de Carlyle, que mal tinha conseguido sair do quarto nos últimos dias da lua de mel, ele aproveitou cada segundo.
Obviamente, eles enlouqueceram juntos e cobiçaram um ao outro, mas Carlyle não conseguia entender por que ele era o único a ficar tão cansado. Eles nadaram da mesma maneira e fizeram as mesmas atividades. Carlyle estava pensando nisso enquanto observava Ash, que dormia profundamente no avião particular. É estranho. Depois de conhecer Ash, passei a me alimentar melhor e embora me exercite me sinto um pouco cansado.
De qualquer forma, a lua de mel foi boa. Apesar de só ter podido usufruir da ilha e do mar por metade do tempo, não foi uma pena porque era algo que eles podem fazer a qualquer momento em uma ilha de propriedade da família. Uma vez que o número de pessoas que poderiam ver Ash, com roupa de banho, iria ser reduzido ao mínimo, Carlyle se sentiu satisfeito.
Fora isso, houve muitas coisas divertidas. No dia em que finalmente saíram do quarto e foram aproveitar o resort, os casais que passavam olharam para Ash e isso foi irritante para Carlyle, mas foi maravilhoso beijar o homem dentro do oceano, passarem um tempo juntos em lugares aos quais nunca tinham ido e tirar fotos um do outro que normalmente nunca tiram para levar como recordação. Não levaram nenhum fotógrafo em particular, pois queriam guardar as memórias apenas dos dois. Tinha tirado fotografias suficientes com profissionais antes e durante o casamento, por isso também não viu necessidade de o fazer ali.

— Como foi sua viagem, Carlyle?
Carlyle, que ficou perdido em suas memórias por um tempo, olhou para cima quando ouviu a voz de Alice chamando por ele. Podia ver um belo rosto bebendo chá com uma postura impecável. Naquele momento eles estavam tomando chá e conversando sobre a viagem. Fazia duas semanas desde que voltaram da lua de mel.
A hora do chá semanal, que decidiram trazer para as suas respectivas casas, realizava-se hoje na casa de Carlyle. Alice tinha conseguido aproximar-se dele desde a cerimónia de noivado, quando Carlyle ficou levemente doente, e tinha recentemente tornado o evento obrigatório.
Normalmente, a obrigação poderia ser um fardo, mas Carlyle gostou da missão. Ele raramente passava tempo com a mãe, e Mayum estava sempre presente, tornando o ambiente mais suave e agradável. Naquele dia, Mayum decidiu visitá-los pois iria cozinhar para eles. Ela estava assando vários dos bolos favoritos de Alice na cozinha não muito distante de onde eles estavam.
Uma das coisas que mudaram desde que conheceu Ash foi o relacionamento dele com a mãe: desde o dia em que ele se passou mal, ela parecia estar tentando ser diferente.
Para ser preciso, ele estava aprendendo a se expressar.
Carlyle, que sempre achou que só havia puxado o pai, gostou de perceber os traços que compartilhava com sua mãe. Os lindos olhos azuis claros, o cabelo preto e o lado inteligente eram coisas que ele achava destoar entre eles. Mas definitivamente herdou algumas características sociais, especialmente em termos de expressão facial e corporal.
— Foi muito bom.
No entanto, por serem tão parecidos, ainda havia um longo caminho a percorrer para terem uma conversa casual. Não sei como é que Nicholas pode tratar minha mãe, o que ainda é tão difícil para mim, com tal desfaçatez – por vezes ao ponto de parecer muito ousado.
Mesmo depois de ouvir a resposta monótona, Alice acenou com a cabeça. Carlyle, de alguma forma, tentou pensar no próximo tópico. A ansiedade se escondeu por trás de sua expressão fria. — Agora que penso nisso… você é o único de nós que teve uma lua de mel tradicional.
Considerando a Alice de sempre, foi uma frase bastante longa. Involuntariamente feliz, Carlyle olhou bem nos olhos de sua mãe. Olhos azuis o encaravam. Quando seus olhares se encontraram, a mão de Alice que segurava a xícara tremeu levemente. Era semelhante à reação que ele tinha quando sua timidez se manifestava.
— … Bom… Kyle e Nicholas ainda não fizeram uma viagem adequada…
Ele mal entendeu então quase perdeu tempo para responder. Seu irmão mais novo, Kyle, havia adiado a viagem pois Nick estava grávido antes da lua de mel. Ele se lembrava de ouvir de Mayam que a lua de mel de seus pais quase foi cancelada devido a uma gravidez pré-marital. Com a resposta de Carlyle, Alice falou com mais naturalidade do que antes.
— Eles disseram que iriam quando as crianças fossem um pouco maiores. Agora, os gêmeos não querem sair do lado de Nicholas…
— Ambos são fofos. – Carlyle disse, pensando em Gideon e Kara.
Gideon e Kara, filhos de Kyle, eram gêmeos e cresciam a cada dia. Talvez devido aos genes de seus pais inteligentes, eram extremamente fofos e capazes de manter uma conversa antes mesmo de terem três anos. O sangue de seu irmão Kyle era forte, então as crianças carregavam características-chave do pai. Às vezes ele se perguntava como filhos tão adoráveis podiam vir de uma pessoa crítica como Nicholas.
— Sim. Bem. Graças a isso, o meu pai desviou a sua atenção……..
Alice respondeu brevemente e bebeu do chá novamente. Um sentimento de culpa veio naturalmente ao recordar inconscientemente a história do avô. Ele ainda se sentia culpado de não se tornar o alfa que seu avô queria.

Então ela chamou Mayam.
— May, o lanche ainda está longe?
Embora os biscoitos tenham sido servidos antes, Alice chamou Mayam com seriedade. Felizmente, Mayam parecia ter ouvido seu chamado imediatamente.
— Acabei de terminar!
Uma voz alegre foi ouvida e passos ressoaram. Com luvas de forno azul-marinho nas mãos, aproximou-se da mesa com uma apetitoso torta de figo ainda na assadeira.
— Hoje fiz uma torta de figo pela primeira vez em muito tempo. É aquele que a senhora gosta.
A expressão de Alice se suavizou ligeiramente. Carlyle fez o mesmo. Quando Mayam terminou de falar, Alice comentou baixinho, transformando o ambiente tenso em algo mais suave.
— As tortas de May são sempre deliciosos.
— Verdade! Também fiz uma torta de carne moída com um pouco de uísque que o menino gosta. Decorei com um pouco de Cereja Morello. Tenho certeza que você vai gostar!
Mayam se moveu graciosamente como um pardal. Depois de colocar a torta na mesa, trouxe rapidamente a torta de carne moída, pegou um prato e um garfo e habilmente colocou sobre a mesa. Vê-la agindo deu paz de espírito a Carlyle.
— Gostaria de comer junto conosco, May? – perguntou Carlyle.

A alegria se espalhou por seu rosto quente. Vendo isso, os rostos de Alice e Carlyle também se suavizaram. Sentiu cócegas nas pontas dos dedos. Era a primeira vez que os três estavam em um ambiente tão estável.

Mas a surpresa não acabou por aí. Alice levantou-se enquanto Mayam estava prestes a se sentar. Quando Mayam tentou se levantar meio agitada, Alice acenou com a mão.

Alice foi para a cozinha, deixando os dois sozinhos. Carlyle ficou surpreso com a fala de Mayam, fazendo com que os papeis se invertessem: era Mayam quem, agora, parecia calma. Ela piscou para Carlyle e sussurrou.
— Quando era jovem a primeira coisa que a senhora fez para o mestre, foi limonada. Ela sempre fazia questão de trazer ela mesma.
— … Eu não sabia.
— A senhora e o jovem mestre são muito parecidos, então você provavelmente nem sabe. Estou tão feliz que ambos se conheceram maridos amorosos. Desde a primeira vez que vi o Sr. Jones, eu soube imediatamente que estavam destinados!
Enquanto Mayam sussurrava, Alice voltou. A mesa do chá estava pronta quando a garrafa de vidro e o copo de limonada foram colocados sobre a mesa. Carlyle decidiu cessar a conversa e comer a torta, em vez de continuar com a conversa monótona e incomodar sua mãe.
No prato de todos, Mayam colocou uma fatia de torta de figo e torta de carne moída. A atmosfera ficou silenciosa e o garfo de Carlyle se moveu suavemente. Seus olhos estavam um pouco pesados devido ao cansaço, mas ele não podia decepcionar as expectativas de sua mãe. Carlyle respirou fundo e comeu a torta como antes. Mayam, que o observava, sussurrou para Alice.
— Senhora, talvez…?
— Não… não sei.
Carlyle comeu a torta, sem deixar migalhas, devido a sinceridade de Mayam e as expectativas de sua mãe. Ele estava com muita fome. Talvez fosse porque ele sofreu muito durante seu rut. Seu corpo ainda não havia retornado e seu apetite não parecia mais o mesmo.
— Carlyle, você não gostava de figos, não é mesmo?
Quando ele estava prestes a tomar uma xícara de chá, Alice perguntou. Carlyle retirou a mão de sua xícara e respondeu rapidamente. — Sim, eu não gosto de figos. Quando Ash faz, eu como, mas não costumo procurar muito.
Mayam soltou um suspiro como o grito de um pássaro. Ela cobriu a boca com as duas mãos e gritou – Ai meu Deus!
Alice fez uma cara confusa, e perguntou a Carlyle.
— Mas está muito gostoso, certo?
— … Sim. Tudo que May faz é delicioso…
Em um instante, Alice ficou séria. Já Mayam, não pôde esconder sua empolgação e cortou um pedaço de torta ainda maior do que antes, oferecendo a Carlyle.
— Em momentos como esses você deve comer bem, jovem mestre! Vamos, coma mais. Vamos!
Carlyle não conseguia entender o que estava acontecendo. A mãe parecia séria e Mayam estava encantada. Incapaz de dizer que estava satisfeito, Carlyle comeu sua terceira fatia de torta de figo em silêncio. Talvez esta torta tivesse muitos figos e apenas o sabor das frutas fosse sentido. Ele respirou um pouco, mas se segurou: bebeu do chá e imaginou que ficaria bem.
Carlyle, fazendo o possível para esvaziar o prato, achou que era hora de dizer que estava satisfeito. Cuidadosamente colocando o garfo na mesa, a mão de Alice se estendeu. Ela pegou as costas da mão de Carlyle enquanto baixava o garfo. Os olhos de Carlyle se arregalaram quando ele viu a mão branca que o segurava suave e fortemente.
— Carlyle… Acho que devo ligar para Luther.
— Eu ligo para você!
Mayam pulou da cadeira e correu como se não houvesse amanhã. Carlyle, que olhou para ela enquanto a mulher pegava o celular e ligava, finalmente conseguiu fazer uma pergunta.
— Há algo errado?
Alice respirou fundo e esfregou as costas da mão de Carlyle. Quando ela olhou para seu rosto tenso, seu estômago começou a revirar. Toda a comilança em conjunto da tensão atacou seu estômago. O que eu fiz de errado? Algo aconteceu?
— … Seria bom você fazer um teste de gravidez.
Alice cuspiu as palavras inesperadas. Carlyle piscou. Ele não entendia o que ela quis dizer.
