Não sabia se o remédio que Luther prescreveu funcionou ou se foi resultado do pedido Ash, mas o resfriado do homem melhorou no dia seguinte. Ele ainda tinha febre residual, mas a sua tosse diminuiu. Foi uma verdadeira benção, embora o paciente tenha levado seu cuidador ao limite.
Ash acordou cedo pela manhã e pegou um pouco de muesli para ele e Carlyle comerem. Depois de comer o muesli com iogurtes, nozes, framboesas e morangos, Ash voltou a dormir. Carlyle refletiu sobre o fato de que a pessoa que ele deveria cuidar havia levado o café da manhã para ele. Olhando com grande carinho para Ash enquanto dormia tranquilamente, Carlyle decidiu que hoje seria o dia em que ele cuidaria perfeitamente do homem.
Quando estava prestes a chamar o cozinheiro, chegou à conclusão de que Ash poderia preferir que ele mesmo preparasse ao menos uma refeição. Provavelmente ele iria gostar, embora sentisse pena dos problemas que teria que enfrentar. Então a excitação aumentou. Este não era o momento para isso. Com uma caligrafia fluida, Carlyle escreveu o texto com todo o seu coração. Catherine voltou seu olhar, encontrou seus olhos e sorriu suavemente. Olhos azuis brilharam intensamente.

— Eu amo meu noivo.
Não precisa adicionar muito a frase. As palavras que acabou de dizer representava tudo. O sentimento de amor contido em poucas palavras, era infinito.
— Não posso e não quero amar alguém que não seja Ash. Não consigo nem sonhar com uma vida sem ele. Então, Catherine.
Catherine o ouviu em silêncio.
— Richard não poderia ser feliz ao meu lado. Sinto muito.
— Hmm.
Catherine piscou os olhos azuis brilhantes e olhou diretamente para Carlyle. Mantendo as costas retas, ela virou a cabeça e abriu a boca enquanto olhava para a porta.
— Você ouviu, Richard? Venha agora.

Catherine sorriu desculpando-se e gesticulou para Richard. Richard caminhou para o lado dela com a boca fechada. O barulho de sapatos parou na frente de Carlyle. Ele costumava ser bastante falador quando estava perto do homem, mas olhou para Carlyle sem dizer uma palavra. Então ele disse a Catherine.
— Você não o convenceu o suficiente, mãe.
— Claro. Carlyle tem alguém que ama, Richard. Você também sabe disso. Agora que está crescido, pare de ser infantil.
Com um sorriso no rosto, Catherine soltou uma voz amarga.
— Peça desculpas por seu comportamento imprudente.
— Mas eu fui sincero.

Richard cerrou os punhos. O rosto bonito se contorceu tristemente. Olhando para Carlyle, ele abriu a boca com lágrimas nos olhos.

Como uma criança obediente, Richard seguiu Carlyle em seus passos.

O Benz que o motorista dirigia rolou silenciosamente pela estrada. Em resposta ao pedido para seguir uma rota que permitisse tempo para uma conversa razoável, o carro parou em uma estrada nos arredores do centro de Londres. — Parece que você só esteve no exterior por um dia.
Richard olhou pela janela e disse.

Richard fez uma pausa, depois falou novamente.
— Fiz isso porque estava chateado porque Carlyle está ignorando meus sentimentos. Eu estava falando sério.
— Então foi por isso que você enviou tal presente para minha casa onde meu noivo vive?
— Já pedi desculpas antes, então não vou mais fazer isso.
Carlyle aceitou sem expressão.
— Você estava agindo de forma promíscua, então, foi difícil acreditar que estava sendo sincero.
— Isto não é um pouco demais?
Finalmente, Richard voltou o olhar para fora da janela e falou sem rodeios. Carlyle riu para si mesmo com os resquícios de sua infância. O sorriso em seu rosto não foi revelado pois pertencia a Ash, mas as memórias que vinham à mente, com jovem Richard eram bastante razoáveis e decentes.

Carlyle se desculpou.

Richard fechou a boca e olhou para o rosto de Carlyle. Ele olhou para Carlyle por um longo tempo, com uma cara que parecia estar em reminiscência, e falou devagar.

Carlyle saiu do carro e Richard o seguiu. Depois de fechar a porta, ele correu até Carlyle e disse seriamente.

Isso era tudo o que podia suportar. No momento que estava prestes a atacar Richard com uma expressão aterrorizante no rosto, Ash abriu a boca.
— Sim. Isso mesmo. Não sou nada comparado a Lyle. Sem títulos, sem dinheiro. Não lhe darei nenhum benefício material.
Inclinando a parte superior do corpo para a frente, Ash olhou para Richard, sem sorrir, erguendo os lábios e esticando os braços. Então ele agarrou a mão de Richard.
— Mas ninguém além de mim pode fazer Lyle feliz. Especialmente uma pessoa como você que não sabe, como é ruim ouvir alguém insultar a pessoa que se ama assim.
Ash disse com os lábios curvados.
— Então solte esta mão e desapareça.
Assim que essas palavras terminaram, Carlyle colocou força na mão e empurrou Richard para longe. Richard soltou sua mão fechada, cambaleando para trás. Como um alfa dominante, ele poderia ter parado Ash ou Carlyle se quisesse, mas pareceu cair em si no final.
Ash puxou Carlyle para ele e recuou um pouco. O ar estava manchado por um silêncio pesado. Foi Carlyle quem quebrou o momento de silêncio em que nem mesmo o som do vento soprava.
— Peço desculpas, Richard. Se você é um nobre, não, sendo um ser humano, você deve ter aprendido a assumir a responsabilidade por seus atos.

Ash o deteve com uma voz atordoada. Ele estava conversando com Carlyle com um rosto cansado. Por mais triste que fosse a situação, Carlyle não conseguia perdoar Richard. — Não está certo. Richard, deixe-me ser claro. O desrespeito ao meu noivo é um insulto para mim. Se você não se desculpar, não o verei novamente.
— Por que você está fazendo isso por essa pessoa? Mais do que por mim, que você conhece a tanto tempo, realmente é assim….
Richard franziu a testa. Ele mordeu o lábio até ficar branco, então balançou a cabeça e deu um passo para trás.
— Deve ser precioso. Já que decidiu casar com ele.
Richard passou a mão pelo cabelo e franziu a testa. Ele respirou fundo e abaixou a cabeça ligeiramente. Então olhou diretamente para Ash e disse.

Richard assentiu e recuou. Ele olhou para Carlyle uma vez antes de voltar para o carro. Carlyle olhou para ele por um momento com olhos frios e depois se virou. Sem ver o carro partir, Ash deu o primeiro passo. Seguindo em silêncio, Carlyle se dirigiu para a mansão.

Mesmo depois de entrar na casa, Ash ficou em silêncio. Nunca houve um momento em que Ash estava em silêncio ao seu lado, então Carlyle que, não conseguia respirar, olhou em seus olhos. Ele parecia uma pessoa diferente. A ansiedade aumentou. Ash deixou o corredor e entrou na sala de estar. Seguindo silenciosamente o homem, ele finalmente abriu a boca.
— Ash, me desculpe. Sinto muito.
Estava muito triste. Foi muito doloroso ouvir Ash dizer aquelas palavras. Lamentou ter que enfrentar Richard no final, e foi doloroso porque não sabia o quanto o havia machucado. Ash parou em frente ao sofá sem olhar para ele, finalmente dizendo para Carlyle.

Carlyle ouviu Ash sem nem mesmo piscar. Ash ficou desapontado comigo? A minha escolha não foi a resposta? E se ele estiver cansado de eu não ser capaz de lidar mesmo com isto de forma limpa? E se ele se arrepender do nosso casamento?
— Fiz isso porque eu não queria que Ash se preocupasse. Rejeitei-o, claro, e pensei que era um assunto que eu poderia resolver sozinho. Se ficou ofendido, por favor……..
— Sim, eu não me senti bem com isso.
Palavras que soaram como uma sentença de morte caíram. A testa de Carlyle ficou branca. Ash sempre foi generoso e gentil. Alguma vez o viu expressar adequadamente seu desgosto? Nunca.
Arruinei tudo tudo. Não queria fazer nada que preocupasse Ash, então decidi resolver sozinho, e no final não consegui fazer nada direito. Esperava que nada de ruim acontecesse entre nós, até o casamento. Se Ash estiver desapontado comigo e quiser cancelar o casamento…..

— Eu não quero ouvir um pedido de desculpas. Queria ter ouvido aquilo da boca de Lyle…
Ash não pegou a mão dele. Ele continuou com um olhar confuso.
— Eu não gostei que você tenha escondido isso de mim.
Carlyle mal podia suportar o desejo de se agarrar a ele. Sem saber o que fazer, tentou explicar por que havia tomado essa decisão. Sua mente estava tonta. Mordendo o lábio, ele olhou para o rosto de Ash sem hesitar. Ash que sempre costumava abraçá-lo quando olhava em seus olhos, o encarava de maneira fria. Estava apavorado.
— Mas…
— Sim.
Seu pensamento aguçado e racional congelou e endureceu. Carlyle teve que lutar para encontrar uma frase. As sentenças que foram ditas no mínimo foram desoladoras.
— Mesmo se tivesse dito isso antes, nada teria mudado. Não queria fazer nada para aborrecê-lo.
— Então você conseguiu, Lyle?
Ash perguntou baixinho. Carlyle balançou a cabeça lentamente. Depois do medo, a tristeza começou a se insinuar. Já fazia um tempo desde que suas emoções oscilavam assim, então sua expressão endureceu enquanto prendia a respiração. Porque as coisas não poderiam parecer piores.
Estava desolado. Estava com medo que o seu relacionamento terminasse por causa disso, e lamentava muito o fato de que seu futuro marido, Ash, não pudesse entendê-lo completamente. Embora soubesse que era um sentimento quase tolo, Carlyle não conseguia se controlar. Era óbvio que Ash havia se acostumado a aceitar seus hábitos e personalidade.
— Pensei que Ash iria me entender.
Com os olhos baixos, Carlyle disse calmamente. As palavras foram pronunciadas como um ato de desespero diante de uma pergunta sem resposta. Poderia ter havido uma resposta melhor, mas Carlyle respondeu imprudentemente com essas palavras.
— Eu disse que você pode confiar em mim, Lyle. Você pode me dizer qualquer coisa.
Ash respondeu calmamente às palavras de Carlyle, que mordeu o lábio.
— Mas Ash escondeu coisas de mim sobre Hazel. Não foi?
Ao contrário de um cavalheiro, Carlyle invocou o passado. Pensou que tinha esquecido, mas o momento em que teve que ouvir a história de Hazel da boca de outras pessoas ainda apareciam por vezes nos seus sonhos. Com a menção repentina do nome, Ash finalmente estendeu a mão. Carlyle afastou a mão que tinha segurado e recuou um pouco. Carlyle abriu a boca com o queixo endurecido. Estava prestes a dizer palavras que não deveriam ser ditas.
— Lyle.
Eles eram tão diferentes. Assim como as suas experiências. Tive apenas um amante, Ash, mas Ash havia tido muitos amantes no passado. Carlyle tinha certeza de que ele teria cuidado bem deles, mesmo que não tanto como cuida agora, de seu amante, e com essas experiências ele teria aprendido como confiar neles e como tratá-los.
Mas para ele, Ash era tudo. Embaraçosamente, Carlyle Frost acreditava que era um ser humano desajeitado com relações, e que Ash era o único com capacidade para abraçá-lo e cuidar dele.
— Eu não sabia qual era a coisa certa a se fazer. Me desculpe.
Carlyle se desculpou duramente sem olhar para Ash. Ash respirou fundo. Desta vez, sua mão tocou o rosto dele. O homem gentilmente agarrou sua bochecha e levantou seu rosto. Ao tentar dar força ao corpo, Carlyle percebeu que era um comportamento infantil e levantou o seu olhar. O seu coração doía.
— EU…….
Os dedos acariciaram levemente suas bochechas. Assim que um toque amigável o tocou, seu coração que havia endurecido como pedra, amoleceu. Quando estava se perguntando o que estava fazendo com uma pessoa doente, Ash falou novamente.
— Eu deixei Lyle triste.”
— Não.
— Eu disse que era o único que poderia te fazer feliz.
Um sorriso finalmente voltou ao rosto de Ash. Mas foi um sorriso de auto-repreensão. Esboçando um sorriso amargo, o homem esfregou a bochecha dele mais algumas vezes e se levantou do sofá.
— Sinto muito. Houve muita interferência.
— Ash, eu estava errado.
— Não. Lyle, se estiver tudo bem para você, vou descansar um pouco. Devo ter reagido com muita sensibilidade a isso, porque ainda estou cansado. No entanto, isso seria apenas uma desculpa.
Carlyle não conseguiu pegar Ash quando o homem deu um passo e se afastou. Ficou surpreendido com o seu aspecto cansado. Até mesmo a suposição de que Ash realmente se arrependeria de sua escolha de ficar com ele veio à mente. Ao vê-lo subir as escadas sem olhar para trás, a ansiedade envolveu seus tornozelos como uma cobra e o agarrou. O medo tornou-se gravidade e pressionou fortemente contra seus ombros.
Carlyle exalou depois de Ash ter ido para o quarto. Ficou ali sentado, incapaz de pensar em trocar de roupas e se mexer. Se lembrou da cena em que Ash disse que ninguém mais poderia fazer Carlyle feliz, exceto ele mesmo. Era um fato óbvio. Carlyle até ficou encantado no momento em que Ash disse isso a Richard.
