Em um fim de semana de abril, cinco semanas antes de seu casamento, Ash Jones começou sua manhã com a ausência de seu amante.
A luz do sol da primavera fez cócegas em seu rosto o acordando. Assim que a energia do sono se dissipou, o que ele fez foi esticar os braços para os lados como de costume. Para tocar seu lindo namorado que devia estar dormindo profundamente. No entanto, não sentindo a temperatura corporal fresca que deveria estar ao seu lado, ele deu um pulo involuntariamente. O fato de não haver outra pessoa ao lado dele, o que havia se tornado mais natural do que respirar, o deixou sensível por um momento.

Se fosse no passado, uma viagem de negócios de apenas cinco dias não teria o afetado tanto. Para começar, eles não estariam vivendo juntos e não se veriam todos os dias.

Podia ouvir as vozes das pessoas ao seu redor. Carlyle disse que iria se desculpar rapidamente e sair dali. Os arredores eram barulhentos como, um salão de festas. Uma energia gentil voltou lentamente ao rosto endurecido. Ash, que engoliu um leve suspiro, abriu a boca com olhos sorridentes.

Fazia apenas dois dias, mas esse tempo parecia uma eternidade. Não podia acreditar que teve que esperar tanto para ver Carlyle.
[O farei. Estarei aí na segunda-feira, então só falta mais um pouco…..]
As palavras de Carlyle, que estava respondendo seriamente, foram cortadas. Uma voz diferente interrompeu.
[Lyle, por que você está demorando tanto?]
Ouviu uma voz com um tom juvenil. Era uma voz rara e suave. Mas o que Ash ouviu não foi a voz, mas o título “Lyle”. Ash manteve a boca fechada.

O Grande Prémio de Xangai era o evento menos favorito de Carlyle Frost, uma competição da qual nunca tinha participado, exceto no ano em que começou a patrocinar a Fórmula 1. A China não lhe convinha de muitas maneiras, era tão ruim quanto Nova York, em termos de superlotação, e o ar ficava mais sujo e barulhento à medida que os anos passavam. A única coisa boa era a comida. Não havia razão para ousar vir a Xangai além de ver o Grande Prémio, pois era um lugar que ele não tinha qualquer intenção de visitar, a menos que fosse para fins comerciais.
A poluição em Xangai tornou-se tão severa nos últimos anos que Carlyle ficou aliviado por Ash não ter ido para a China com ele. Claro que viajar para China pela primeira vez juntos seria um evento monumental por si só, ainda mais tão próximo ao seu aniversário, mas era inaceitável que Ash respirasse um ar tão obscuro. Ele era um homem que merecia o melhor dos tratamentos. Pensou que não deveria levá-lo para Xangai porque existia a possibilidade de ele ficar doente devido à exposição ao ar mais poluído do que o de Londres.
— Por que você está assim?
Uma mão pousou em seu ombro enquanto se sentava no sofá. As únicas pessoas com as quais Carlyle gostava de ter contato eram com a sua família, e claro, com seu amante, Ash, então, para ser honesto, o toque foi um pouco desagradável. Com isso, Carlyle abriu a boca com um rosto inexpressivo.
— Richard, eu disse a você que esse tipo de contato é desconfortável.
— Ouvi dizer que você me abraçou forte quando eu era pequeno.
Ele virou a cabeça. Olhou friamente para o homem de cabelos prateados da mesma altura. O homem ao seu lado era Richard Cavendish, filho único do Duque de Westminster. Ou seja, um homem poderoso e rico, amado pela família Cavendish, que há muito está associado à família real.

— Lyle, o que você está fazendo?

Disse seu nome apressadamente, caso a ligação caísse.

Uma voz doce foi ouvida. Seu coração ficou quente ao ouvir o nome “Lyle”, sendo chamado pelo homem. Até a voz ao telefone era extremamente bonita. Carlyle ponderou sua pergunta. Fisicamente, ele estava bem. Mas não era nada divertido. Na verdade, a vida de Carlyle sempre esteve longe de ser prazerosa. Sua vida era tranquila e orientada para um propósito, não tinha nada a ver com a palavra diversão. Mas agora é diferente. A vida com Ash era exageradamente cheia de alegria.
— Não é tão divertido. Eu não quero ficar onde Ash não está.

Com as palavras “ligue para mim antes de ir para a cama”, Ash disse que não podia desligar. Esperando que desligasse, Carlyle não teve outra escolha senão desligar primeiro. Estava dominado pelo arrependimento. O tempo da chamada foi muito curto. Sentiu-se vazio e até triste com a sensação de estar mais longe, apesar de já estarem separados. Decidiu que tinha que ver o rosto dele antes de dormir por uma videochamada.
Os sapatos pretos, que haviam permanecido no lugar, mudaram de direção. A parte de trás das costas do terno sem rugas dirigiu-se ao salão onde a festa estava acontecendo. Os olhos sorridentes de Richard afundaram.
— Por que de repente tenho que parar de fazer isso?
— É um nome que só meu noivo chama. Não quero ouvir isso da boca de mais ninguém.

Richard pousou o copo de uísque. Carlyle ficou intrigado com a recusa fervorosa, mas esperou paciente por suas palavras.
