— Como você chegou aqui?
Embora não fosse a primeira vez que Ash o tocava assim, Carlyle estava mais envergonhado do que antes. Parecia que muito tempo havia se passado. Então, Carlyle se virou e perguntou a primeira coisa que lhe veio à mente. Ash caminhou ao lado dele, seguindo a mão que o agarrou.
— Você está curioso?— Ash perguntou com um sorriso.
— Sim, estou curioso.
Ele sempre foi curioso sobre tudo relacionado a Ash. Era algo natural.
— Eu vou te dizer tudo o que você quer saber, Carlyle.
Essa foi a bela resposta de Ash. Enquanto desciam as escadas, os dois começaram a andar pelos fundos da mansão que levava ao jardim. Naquela época, Philip ainda não estava casado. Ele nunca esqueceu minha mãe. Me lembro dele ter dito para ela: “Ah, vejo que você está bem. Teve um filho e parece ser muito feliz”.
Foi muito doloroso. Carlyle sentiu muita pena de Ash, que estava expressando sua tristeza com indiferença. E enquanto contava uma tragédia, que não podia ser prevista ao ver seu rosto sorridente, Carlyle queria segurar Ash em seus braços. Queria fazê-lo feliz.

Enquanto a confissão silenciosa continuava, ambos chegaram ao final do corredor. Quando abriram o portão do jardim, um vento frio soprou em suas faces. Ash estendeu a outra mão e fechou o terno de Carlyle.
— Está com frio? Vamos conversar aqui em vez de sair?
— Se o Sr. Jones está com frio, é melhor conversarmos aqui.

Carlyle virou-se na direção do vento, para que Ash não fosse afetado. O som da água ecoou suavemente na fonte. Ash olhou para Carlyle por um momento e subitamente o puxou para longe. Então, ele abriu um pouco o casaco e puxou Carlyle para seus braços. Ele estava quente.
— E agora? Está menos frio, certo?
