Carlyle, que ficou ali distraído por um tempo, mordeu o lábio. Ele estava absorto no fato de que não tinha agido bem. Então, tentou segurar a ideia que estava passando por sua cabeça naquele momento.
‘Não posso deixar Joel sozinho novamente. Eu já cometi um grande erro. Agora tenho que voltar e…’
— Vamos conversar por um momento.
Quando estava prestes a sair da sala, Alice veio do corredor. Carlyle, que ainda estava confuso, olhou para Alice como se estivesse surpreso.
Então, ele olhou para sua mãe, que estava usando seu cabelo preto em um coque. Na memória de Carlyle, Alice sempre foi assim. Carlyle não via Alice tantas vezes por ano, a encontrava com muito menos frequência do que via seu pai, Jonathan. Porque ambos estavam sempre ocupados.

Alice disse, abaixando a mão com firmeza. E enquanto ela gesticulava em direção ao sofá, ele cautelosamente recusou sua oferta.
— O Sr. Stewart deve estar me esperando. Eu tenho que voltar e…
— Ele já deve ter ido embora.
Carlyle piscou. Ele não entendeu as palavras que acabara de ouvir.
— Desculpe, mas poderia repetir?
— Esse noivado nunca existiu. Eu vou contar ao meu pai, então, não se preocupe.
— Mamãe?
Sua voz se elevou um pouco. Era difícil para ele aceitar o que Alice acabara de lhe contar.
— Que significa isso? Não tem sentido. Nós fizemos um acordo com Stewart…
— De qualquer forma, ele não atendeu aos requisitos. Uma das condições oferecidas não foi cumprida.
A voz de sua mãe parecia zangada. Foi embaraçoso. Ele se sentiu muito envergonhado. Nunca tinha visto Alice demonstrar tantas emoções em sua vida. Nunca a tinha visto assim, desde que Kyle foi sequestrado.
— Não acho que haja termos discrepantes no pré-contrato.
Não houve problemas com conteúdo dos documentos que iam e vinham antes do início do compromisso como por exemplo acordo pré-nupcial. A vertente empresarial foi discutida com um grupo de advogados que sugeriram uma proposta de consulta. Alice balançou a cabeça. E enquanto olhava para fora da porta, disse friamente.
— A condição era que, se ocorresse algum problema, o noivado seria imediatamente rompido, para prosseguir com a busca de outro parceiro mais adequado….
Carlyle ficou intrigado. Ele pensou que tinha conseguido escapar antes de desmaiar, para um lugar fora do alcance das pessoas, mas aparentemente não era o caso. Parecia que havia muitas testemunhas oculares. Portanto, a situação atual era compreensível. Ter que se comprometer com um parceiro que parece ter muitas falhas é…
— Carlyle. — Alice o chamou. Carlyle se virou. — Posso perguntar quem era a pessoa ao seu lado? — Alice disse de repente. Quando ela perguntou sobre Ash, Carlyle fechou a boca. — Kyle me disse, que ele é o homem que você ama.
Carlyle franziu a testa. Seu irmão era adorável independente do que fizesse, mas provavelmente foi ele quem trouxe Ash hoje. Não queria que ele se envolvesse nesse tipo de coisa.
— Você não precisa se preocupar com isso.

Alice ficou em silêncio por um tempo. Ela que estava olhando para porta com boca fechada, se virou e olhou para Carlyle. Os olhos azuis pálidos que se assemelhavam aos de Kyle se inclinaram com um olhar melancólico direcionado a Carlyle. Era como se ela fosse outra pessoa. Alice nunca tinha mostrado aquela expressão para Carlyle antes.
— Eu pensei que você estava bem. — Alice disse calmamente. — Você nunca disse que não gostava. Nem disse que sentia alguma dor. Eu sei, foi assim que te criei. Mas Carlyle…
Alice fechou os olhos com força, como se não conseguisse superar sua emoção. Seus longos cílios tremularam. O som de sua respiração foi ouvido. Então, ela inadvertidamente estendeu a mão, depois a abaixou e disse:
— No momento em que eu soube que você estava sobrecarregado, ao ponto de desmaiar sob estresse, eu….
Seu pai, Jonathan, certa vez disse a Carlyle que ele era muito parecido com Alice. E então Carlyle de repente se lembrou de algo com o qual ele nunca foi capaz de se identificar, porque realmente se parecia muito com seu pai. Depois de prender a respiração trêmula, Alice abriu a boca novamente após um longo silêncio.
— Meu pai… Costumava dizer que se eu o criasse mal ele o levaria embora. Ele te criaria. O fato de você ter nascido de uma união entre Alfas o deixou surpreso. Eu não queria entregar você Carlyle. Digo isso, porque fui criada por ele. — Alice se virou. De costas para ele, ela cruzou os braços.
— Se eu te deixasse nas mãos do meu pai, você cresceria infeliz… Foi o que eu pensei. Mas agora que penso nisso, não foi diferente.
Alice colocou a mão no queixo. Seus dedos tremeram.
— Você foi mais infeliz do que eu.
Depois de dizer essas palavras, Alice cobriu o rosto com as mãos. Carlyle, que foi incapaz de encontrar algo para dizer, olhou para a mãe e deu um passo à frente. Sem saber o que fazer, ele estendeu a mão nervosamente, sentindo-se impotente. A agitação de sua mãe o deixou muito nervoso. Mas quando Alice ouviu seus passos, ela acenou com a mão e o parou.
— Estou bem.
Alice levantou a cabeça. Então, se virou. Seus olhos azuis estavam marejados. Apesar de sua expressão fria, ela parecia estar muito triste.
— Eu fiz Kyle e você infelizes. É culpa minha não ter feito o suficiente. Não me atrevo a pedir seu perdão. Mas…
As lágrimas, que Alice estava segurando, finalmente deslizaram por suas bochechas. Quando a viu assim, Carlyle sentiu vontade de chorar. Parecia que algo que havia sido amarrado firmemente estava se soltando aos poucos.

‘Eu te decepcionei, mãe?’ A pergunta que não pode fazer, permaneceu em sua boca. Mas Alice balançou a cabeça como se entendesse. As palavras de Jonathan de que ele e Alice eram muito parecidos vieram à sua mente novamente.
Alice balançou a cabeça e se virou. Então, saiu da sala, tão silenciosamente quanto quando entrou.
E, finalmente, Carlyle foi deixado sozinho. Naquele espaço parado e silencioso, ele olhou para o chão onde as lágrimas de Alice haviam caído. Sua mente era uma completa bagunça. Também houve mudanças em seu exterior. As coisas que compunham a vida de Carlyle permaneceram as mesmas, mas a coisa mais importante havia mudado. O fato de que ele não precisava mais estar noivo de alguém que não amava.
Carlyle viu Alice no café da manhã muito cedo. Isso foi possível, apenas porque ele estava hospedado na casa dos pais por um tempo, depois de desocupar a mansão. Mas enquanto Carlyle estava paralisado por enfrentar uma situação inesperada, Alice sentou-se ao lado dele.

Para Carlyle, que era obrigado a comer uma quantidade adequada de refeições, exceto em algumas circunstâncias, não parecia certo deixar a comida no prato. Mas Alice apontou que ele não tinha comido, porque ainda não tinha recuperado o apetite. Carlyle se desculpou, enquanto pegava a faca e o garfo, que havia deixado cair.

Diante das palavras, Carlyle não conseguiu encontrar nada para dizer, e então baixou os olhos.
Parecia estranho. Situações em que alguém se importava com ele vinham acontecendo muito ultimamente, então ele achava que tinha se acostumado um pouco… mas não era verdade. Carlyle estremeceu com as palavras de Alice. Como podia responder à sua pergunta para deixá-la feliz?

Alice, que estava movendo uma faca como uma máquina, parou com essas palavras. E enquanto olhava para a comida com um rosto vazio, respondeu depois de um longo silêncio.
— Você não precisa pedir desculpas.
Para Carlyle, foi muito difícil responder desta vez. Ele apenas olhou para Alice com olhos perplexos. Então, baixou o olhar e tentou cortar a tortilha restante novamente, mas logo, deixou os talheres de lado depois de hesitar.

Sentindo-se inútil, Carlyle disse cautelosamente que não queria fazer isso. Alice olhou para ele e respondeu que ele poderia fazer o que quisesse, quando quisesse.
Depois dessa conversa, Alice não saiu do lado de Carlyle, mesmo depois de todos os tópicos mais óbvios terem sido levantados. Bebendo chá em silêncio, Carlyle passou uma manhã tranquila ao lado de sua mãe.
Por fim, a secretária que o procurava entrou na sala de jantar pouco antes de Alice sair. Ela se despediu dele, desejando-lhe um bom dia.
Descanso era uma palavra muito desconhecida para Carlyle, que tinha vivido apenas uma vida manipulada por outros, justamente para o bem de sua família. Claro, isso não significava que ele trabalhava sem parar. Ele descansava adequadamente antes de ir para a cama, conforme o necessário.
Além disso, houve momentos em que ele também saiu de férias. Suas férias muitas vezes se sobrepunham a viagens de negócios, eventos familiares ou coisas feitas para fins sociais, porque não havia problema em fazer uma pausa. No entanto, foi a primeira vez que conseguiu sair de férias sem restrições. Foi algo tão estranho, que até ele se sentiu perdido.
Mas ao mesmo tempo… Achou muito confortável.
Durante sua pausa repentina, Carlyle pensou em Ash. Mesmo quando estava doente e perturbado, pensava nele inúmeras vezes, então provavelmente era apenas natural.
Além do mais, Ash disse que o amava. O momento em que ouviu a declaração do homem foi tão triste que não fez sentido para ele, mas assim que ele encontrou a paz, aquela memória tomou conta de sua alma.

Mas depois de uma semana pensando em Ash, Carlyle finalmente tomou uma decisão. Queria encontrá-lo novamente, pelo menos mais uma vez. O fim de semana se aproximava. Ash pediu para que se encontrassem de novo, mas não entrou em contato nesse período.
Era algo natural. A única maneira de Ash chegar até ele era através de Kyle, e Carlyle deixou claro para Kyle não se intrometer em seus negócios. Portanto, era justo que Carlyle ligasse para ele primeiro.
Lembrando as palavras de Ash de que eles deveriam se encontrar mais uma vez, Carlyle calculou o melhor momento para contatá-lo. Talvez o fim de semana seria bom.
E enquanto participava de uma festa para a qual Aiden o havia convidado, Carlyle tomou uma decisão.
— Carlyle.
Aiden chamou Carlyle, que estava organizando seus pensamentos complicados. Carlyle, que estava olhando para o tabuleiro de xadrez, ergueu os olhos. Aiden tinha uma expressão estranha no rosto. Ele parecia interessado e um pouco desapontado.

Mesmo sendo tão doloroso e tão assustador, ele não conseguia controlar as batidas violentas de seu coração. Uma dor doce e sufocante atravessou seu peito.
—…Lyle… para mim… obrigado… Eu vou-.
A voz de Aiden foi ouvida um pouco mais de perto. Carlyle de repente percebeu que Aiden estava muito próximo. E assim que Ash percebeu isso, sua expressão mudou.

Ash disse em uma voz que soava apologética. Ash então estendeu a mão e gentilmente tocou o ombro de Carlyle. Então Carlyle sentiu como se todo o seu corpo tivesse derretido, quando Ash o puxou ligeiramente para ele.
— Não há como meu melhor amigo odiar meu toque.
— Isso é verdade, Carlyle?
Ash perguntou, em vez dele mesmo negar. E então ele franziu as sobrancelhas tristemente, com uma expressão que indica que ficaria muito triste se Carlyle dissesse que sim.

— Pode haver coisas que você não sabe mesmo se for o melhor amigo dele.
