Defina o relacionamento - Capitulo 24
Carlyle já se perdeu uma vez.
Talvez tenha sido naquele outono, quando tinha quatorze anos. Foi em uma reunião com a presença de todos os seus parentes, incluindo seus avós. Ele estava cavalgando pelos vastos campos abertos que levavam as densas florestas ao sul.
Enquanto isso, Kyle, que acabara de aprender a andar a cavalo, desapareceu de sua vista. Para encontrar seu irmão, Carlyle conduziu seu cavalo na direção em que Kyle estava. A floresta do lado de fora parecia apenas quente, mas depois que ele entrou, tornou-se um lugar completamente diferente. Árvores semelhantes se repetiam inúmeras vezes e as sombras eram sombrias. Logo começou a chover e Carlyle se perdeu.
Crianças de famílias ricas e aristocratas recebem educação como preparação para várias coisas. Carlyle aprendeu desde cedo o significado de ser sequestrado ou ameaçado e formas de lidar com as ameaças. Ele também aprendeu desde tenra idade como satisfazer seu parceiro Ômega, como caçar e como encontrar pegadas de animais.
Mas Carlyle nunca aprendeu a ficar sozinho. Ele não sabia como não sentir medo ao se perder em uma floresta daquelas. Na chuva, ele lutou para lembrar o caminho de volta em silêncio. Entrou na floresta para encontrar Kyle, mas não conseguiu ouvir um som ou encontrar quaisquer vestígios se seu irmão.
E antes que o céu ficasse completamente escuro, Carlyle conseguiu mobilizar sua memória para escapar da floresta seguindo os rastros das ferraduras do casco do cavalo e os formatos das árvores. Se tivesse chovido um pouco mais forte, ele estaria em apuros.
Quando conseguiu retornar, Kyle já havia voltado sozinho para os braços de sua mãe. Kyle estava quieto, mas assim que viu Carlyle abriu um grande sorriso. Olhando para Carlyle na chuva, Kyle perguntou se ele estava se sentindo bem. Ninguém tinha percebido que ele havia se perdido.
Mas mesmo que o medo e a solidão que estavam fervendo dentro dele ainda permanecessem em sua mente, Carlyle não demonstrou essas emoções. Se seu avô descobrisse sobre isso, ele certamente o repreenderia. Então seu pai e sua mãe teriam que se desculpar em seu nome, dizendo que ele não era bom o suficiente.
Nenhuma criança gostaria de ver seus pais humilhados. Portanto, Carlyle decidiu permanecer em silêncio. O menino esfregou o cabelo molhado e caminhou até seu irmão. E ele gentilmente alisou o cabelo seco de seu irmão mais novo e disse que estava feliz por estar de volta.
Então se afastou de Kyle alguns segundos depois, porque suas mãos estavam molhadas. Ele não queria que seu irmão mais novo pegasse um resfriado. Em seguida, foi para o quarto e tomou um banho.
Naquela noite, Carlyle pegou uma gripe forte. Para evitar que seu irmão também ficasse gripado, ele ficou sozinho em seu quarto durante toda a viagem. Mayam disse que seus pais o visitavam todas as noites, mas ele nunca os via, então isso não fazia sentido para ele.
Nesse momento, sentiu uma solidão semelhante à que sentiu na floresta, embora não estivesse perdido. Seu coração doía mais que seu corpo.
Desta forma, ele entendeu o dano que as emoções e especulativas podiam causar. Enquanto observava os cavalos além da janela correndo pelos campos ao sol, Carlyle sabia que nunca mais queria se sentir assim novamente. E a partir daquele dia, seu sorriso começou a desaparecer gradualmente.

Depois de anunciar o noivado, Carlyle mal conseguia dormir, mesmo assim perseverou e seguiu em frente. Ele desocupou a mansão e aumentou suas horas no trabalho. Tentou continuar comendo e se exercitando regularmente para não ter que interromper seu trabalho devido à tensão em seu corpo.
Fazer exercício era fácil, mas comer era um problema. Muitas vezes seu estômago doía tanto que ele tinha refluxo mesmo depois de engolir alguns copos de água. Então, ele se acostumou com o gosto amargo do suco gástrico. Essa foi de longe a primeira vez que aconteceu algo assim.
Luther chamou sua doença de “gastrite nervosa¹” e o encorajou a descansar. Ele também acrescentou que, se não fosse controlado, se tornaria uma doença crônica grave. Carlyle sorriu suavemente quando o homem pediu para ele descansar. Se ele parasse para descansar no meio daquela situação, provavelmente ficaria louco.
O tempo continuou a passar dolorosamente devagar. Ele sabia que seu pai, Jonathan, ainda não havia confirmado seu noivado, mas era apenas uma questão de tempo. Não havia justificativa para recusar, e também era um dever dado a Carlyle.
Carlyle passou a vida inteira se preparando para aquele dia. Foi por isso que em sua época de reprodução, ele lidou como uma fera com seu futuro noivo. Para evitar acidentes inesperados, ele misturou seu corpo com o alvo selecionado quando entrou no RUT.
Sua alma e sua própria vida estavam voltadas para isso, então ele tinha que agradecer por esse momento finalmente ter chegado. Assim, ele não precisaria mais trocar de parceiro durante seu ciclo de calor.
O homem que ele escolheu como seu noivo era o filho mais velho de um conde. Joel Stewart, um Ômega, três anos mais novo que Carlyle.
Ele resolveu se estabelecer na família Stewart, que produzia políticos e trabalhava na indústria militar há gerações, para ajudar sua família, que tinha relativamente poucos políticos.
Na verdade, isso era o que seu avô queria. Além de suas boas relações, ele achava que se houvesse políticos ligados pelo sangue à sua casa, os negócios da família seriam ainda mais favoráveis.
Carlyle se lembrava de ter visto Joel em uma reunião. E pelo que viu lá, ele deduziu que o homem tinha uma personalidade amigável. Além disso, um rosto suave e sorridente semelhante ao de Ash. Então pensou sobre isso inconscientemente e parou de sentir dor.
Mas seus pensamentos não pararam por aí. Se ele ia conhecer alguém, tinha um forte desejo de que essa pessoa se parecesse com Ash. Era como se quisesse desligar a corrente puxando o fusível. Mesmo sabendo que não deveria, não havia outra maneira de parar de pensar em Ash, a não ser através da morte.
Mas de qualquer maneira, o tempo passou e Carlyle de alguma forma se recuperou. Ele sabia que se sentia assim por causa de seu próprio erro, então decidiu que não deveria causar nenhum dano à sua família. E enquanto apagava esses pensamentos de sua mente, Carlyle fechou o ferrolho que havia sido aberto. Ele estava se recuperando.
Estava… se recuperando.
— Nós precisamos nos encontrar mais uma vez.
Seus cílios tremeram. Milhares de respirações irregulares deslizaram pela fenda de seus lábios. Sentiu um formigamento na cabeça. Ele se sentiu tonto. Não conseguia entender o que estava acontecendo na frente dele. Toda a série de eventos que ocorreram em questão de minutos era questionável.
‘Por que Ash Jones está aqui?’
Carlyle fechou a boca, antes que as frases saíssem, sem lhe dar tempo de enumerá-las corretamente. A munheca que foi pega ardeu como se estivesse sendo queimada por um fogo invisível. Era como se o que corria em suas veias fosse óleo fervente, não sangue vermelho. Doeu muito.
‘Isso é sério?… É real?’
E no momento em que seus olhos se encontraram pela primeira vez, Carlyle riu. Ele não podia acreditar que seus delírios excessivos se transformaram em uma doença que o levou a ver alucinações. Ficou claro que a imagem do homem, que se formou na retina sob suas pálpebras, agora era representada de maneira diferente.
Carlyle se virou e tentou continuar a conversa novamente. No entanto, ele não conseguiu ouvir uma única palavra da organizadora da festa, que o informava sobre a ordem do banquete de hoje.
E enquanto se movia de um lugar para outro, Carlyle tentava esquecer a alucinação vívida e aterrorizante que acabara de testemunhar. Mas ele não conseguiu. Porque sua alucinação logo foi seguida por uma alucinação auditiva. Alguém chamou seu nome. Carlyle finalmente se virou para olhar a voz vívida. Infelizmente.
No delírio, Ash era tão real e ainda assim falso. Desta vez Carlyle reagiu pateticamente à sua saudação. Era óbvio que os outros o tratariam de forma estranha, se os vissem juntos.
‘Estou falando com o vento’.
Mas a conversa realmente continuou. Ash respondeu aos comentários de Carlyle. Além disso, continuou falando com ele, mesmo que ele nunca respondesse. Seu rosto gradualmente se aproximou. O cheiro de Ash, que ele nunca esqueceria mesmo após a morte, se intensificou. A fragrância fresca e amigável que se perdera em seus sonhos gentilmente o envolveu.
‘Por quê?’
‘Por que Ash veio até mim agora? Esse homem que me disse que não estávamos em um relacionamento, que nunca me impediu. Não ligou, nem mesmo atendeu minhas ligações. Não nos vemos há um mês! Ele não me seguiu e nem me perguntou por quê. Agora, vem me perguntar novamente sobre o que aconteceu naquele dia.’
Seu coração se partiu rapidamente. Como um suporte construído com areia, seu coração desmoronou e se desfez repetidamente. Ele sentiu como se seus pés estivessem flutuando. Todos os tipos de emoções giraram e sacudiram Carlyle violentamente.
Vendo Ash perguntando se havia cometido algum erro, Carlyle até sentiu a necessidade de se ajoelhar. Ele queria desmaiar enquanto era segurado por Ash. Mas ele teve que ser paciente.
Esse era o dia em que seu noivado aconteceria. Independentemente disso, seu destino já estava decidido. Inúmeras razões para rejeitar Ash passaram por sua cabeça.
Não sabia por que ou como ele veio visitá-lo, mas Carlyle considerou que ele provavelmente não sentia o mesmo. Se fosse esse o caso, de jeito nenhum o teria deixado sozinho por tanto tempo.
Em primeiro lugar, Carlyle estava longe de Ash. Mas, na verdade, havia algo que o assustava mais.
Carlyle não teria forças para suportar aquela dor terrível novamente.
‘E se eu aceitar Ash, namorarmos e depois terminarmos? E se Ash se cansar de mim de novo? E se ele me deixar porque se cansou da minha aparência chata e contundente?’
‘Quanta dor eu iria sentir?’
Ele não conseguia nem imaginar. Era uma dor impensável. Então talvez ele queira morrer. O amor deles era profundo e tolo. Ele não achava que poderia amar ninguém além de Ash em toda a sua vida.
Se ele pensasse sobre isso, sempre esteve cercado por pessoas assim. Tanto Kyle quanto sua mãe haviam amado apenas uma pessoa em suas vidas. Porque como se fosse uma maldição da família Frost, eles só amavam uma única pessoa.
E Carlyle escolheu Ash Jones, para ser o objeto de um amor que existiria apenas uma vez.
Ash deve ter amado muitas pessoas em sua vida. Mas Carlyle não era assim. Ele tinha certeza que não suportaria perder Ash duas vezes, se tentasse liberar a emoção reprimida novamente e deixá-la tomar conta de sua alma. Tinha essa sensação.
Então teve que rejeitar. Ash certamente ficaria bem sem Carlyle, mas Carlyle não ficaria bem sem Ash. Havia tensão pesada por todo o seu corpo.
Ficou claro que se baixasse um pouco a guarda, seu desejo e afeição escapariam, então Carlyle endureceu a expressão. E logo ele disse algo com a intenção de machucá-lo.
Carlyle sentiu uma dor mortal no momento em que disse a Ash que ele o estava fazendo perder tempo.
Ele sentiu que havia se tornado o homem mais implacável do mundo, vendo seus olhos doloridos e a forma como o sorriso desapareceu de seus lábios.
Mas Ash não recuou.
— Eu não passei o último fim de semana com você, Carlyle.
Seu rosto sorridente era estranho. Até mesmo sua voz desesperada era desconhecida. Carlyle se lembrou inconscientemente que a palavra
‘amor’ estava nas palavras anteriores de Ash. ‘O que significa dizer que uma pessoa apaixonada muitas vezes agi de forma tola?’
— Carlyle, não precisa me falar o que você queria me dizer naquele dia, se não quiser, é claro.
Ash diminuiu a distância novamente. E Carlyle deu dois passos para trás mais uma vez. Havia um par de olhos olhando diretamente para o rosto dele. Uma certa emoção transbordou nos profundos olhos azul e cinza.
Ash nunca tinha olhado para Carlyle assim antes. Incapaz de compreender a situação, seu coração começou a acelerar, como se fosse parar. Ele queria levantar a mão e pressioná-la com força contra as costelas.
— Eu vou te dizer. Há algo que quero te dizer.
Naquele momento, uma suposição ridícula veio à mente. Ah, talvez…
— Carlyle, você…
Carlyle balançou a cabeça. Ele então estendeu a mão e empurrou o ombro de Ash. Interrompeu suas palavras com uma expressão determinada, como se não quisesse ouvir. Não deveria ouvir isso. Ele estava quase interpretando de maneira errada de novo. Qual foi o fim de sua ilusão? Aquilo não foi terrivelmente decepcionante?
— Eu não sei se você sabe.
Ele não queria que Ash falasse. Se ele o ouvisse, aquelas palavras certamente o tornariam incapaz de cumprir seu dever. E então, daria seu coração a ele novamente, sem saber o que faria quando eles se separassem um dia.
— Hoje vou conhecer a pessoa que será meu noivo.
Carlyle apoiou as pernas quase bambas e endureceu a postura. Então, ele endireitou as costas ao ponto de parecer arrogante e olhou para Ash. Olhou um pouco para cima, mas continuou com um olhar indiferente.
— Então, espero que você não me envergonhe mais.
‘Você não deveria estar aqui’.
Olhando nos olhos feridos de Ash, Carlyle sentiu como se tudo estivesse arruinado.
— Então vá embora, Sr. Jones.
Não tinha como voltar atrás. Carlyle desistiu, criando a pior situação. Ele era um idiota que não sabia como construir relacionamentos e não tinha tolerância para superar a dor e a mágoa como qualquer outra pessoa. Em vez de ouvir Ash e encontrar a felicidade com ele imediatamente, decidiu afastá-lo porque não confiava em si mesmo para suportar a dor futura.
Carlyle não sabia por que ele tinha vindo, nem o que estava pensando, mas… Ash vai ficar bem. Haverá muitas pessoas que vão amá-lo.
Carlyle se virou, não dando a Ash a chance de detê-lo. Então, acelerou os passos para que seu pulso não fosse agarrado novamente e mordeu o lábio. Carlyle saiu, ignorando o formigamento em seu estômago.

Na hora marcada para festa, os carros faziam fila na porta da frente. Os convidados começaram a chegar um a um. Havia cerca de quarenta pessoas. A festa, que contou apenas com convidados aristocratas, começou em um ambiente elegante com sua mãe, Alice, como a principal anfitriã.
Para quem terminasse de comer primeiro, havia uma mesa de pôquer ou xadrez no andar de cima. Charutos e outras bebidas alcoólicas também foram preparados.
Depois de verificar se estava tudo bem, Carlyle cumprimentou os membros da família Stewart com um sorriso profissional. Então, ele estendeu a mão enquanto fazia contato visual com seu noivo Joel Stewart, que o seguia.
Ele sentiu um cheiro doce e perfumado. Era o cheiro de um Ômega seduzindo um Alfa. Talvez seu cheiro fosse semelhante ao de Joel.
Mas assim que sentiu seu cheiro almiscarado, Carlyle sentiu uma dor excruciante. E naquele momento, ele teve um vislumbre de seu futuro. Seu futuro era acariciar Joel com sinceridade, misturar seus corpos para satisfazê-lo, ter filhos para continuar seu legado e pertencer fielmente à sua família.
Isso era o que sustentava sua razão e pensamentos, misturados aleatoriamente em sua cabeça. Ele entrou em pânico. A pressão doentia e o inchaço que ele sentia toda vez que abraçava um Ômega atravessava seu cérebro como uma faca.
Ele não tinha confiança para abraçar Joel. Não tinha certeza se poderia se misturar com alguém que não amava. Talvez não pudesse.
Carlyle manteve um sorriso no rosto e conseguiu guiá-lo até o salão de banquetes. Ele não podia mostrar uma aparência embaraçosa na frente de seus convidados. Tinha certeza de que tudo ficaria bem, se ganhasse tempo de alguma forma.
Suprimindo o nó de constrangimento que se formou em sua garganta, Carlyle pediu permissão para deixar seu posto por um momento sem hesitação. Ele nem notou os olhos de Alice e Jonathan olhando para suas costas.
Sua pele ficou pálida. Seu corpo inteiro ficou frio como se não houvesse sangue circulando dentro dele. Carlyle cobriu a boca com a mão e correu pelo corredor. Seu corpo tremeu, e então ele começou a suar frio.
Sentiu uma dor esmagadora no estômago. Então, finalmente parou de andar com a dor que causava em seus intestinos, que era diferente de quebrar um osso ou ser esfaqueado.
Gemendo com as mãos trêmulas, Carlyle pressionou firmemente a área abaixo de suas costelas. Então, ele abaixou a cabeça, engolindo o grito que estava prestes a escapar de sua boca. Ele se sentiu tonto. Perdeu a força nas pernas.
‘Apenas se acalme, faça uma pausa e respire…’
Carlyle moveu-se para o lado para encontrar algo em que se apoiar. Suas mãos acenaram no ar. Seu corpo trêmulo logo desmoronou.
Ao mesmo tempo, alguém o chamou pelas costas. Algo sólido o apoiou por trás. Quando várias vozes foram ouvidas, Carlyle sentiu sua visão começar a girar. E então seus olhos se fecharam.

Sua visão cintilou como se uma lâmpada tivesse se apagado. As memórias que foram cortadas de repente o inundaram imediatamente. Ele mal conseguia abrir as pálpebras pesadas. Um sentimento amargo tomou conta dele, mas não era insuportável.
Carlyle desviou o olhar por um momento para entender a situação. Então, ele exalou lentamente e virou a cabeça para ver onde estava. Era a sala de estar. Virando-se, percebeu que estava deitado no sofá.
— Carlyle.
Uma voz amigável disse seu nome. Uma sombra foi lançada sobre seu corpo. No meio da tontura, Carlyle imediatamente percebeu quem era a outra pessoa. Era Ash. Foi difícil entender a situação imediatamente. Ele sentiu uma dor insuportável. Inacreditavelmente, ele parecia ter desmaiado.
Carlyle era muito talentoso tanto na perseverança quanto na reticência. Não era uma doença grave, mas ele estava envergonhado por ter desmaiado porque não conseguia lidar com o estresse adequadamente.
Mas sua auto recriminação não durou muito. O fato de Ash estar naquela sala o intrigou. Naquele momento, ele se lembrou de que alguém o havia apoiado.
‘Foi Ash? Se sim, tenho que agradecer’.
Mesmo depois do que fez, tentando afastá-lo e mandá-lo para longe.
Ele ouviu o som de sapatos. Teve um vislumbre das pernas longas, e então viu Ash estendendo a mão para puxar uma cadeira. Com um movimento calmo, o viu sentado em cima dela.
Carlyle piscou. Sua visão ficou um pouco mais clara. E quando admitiu que a situação em que se encontrava era ambígua, sentiu uma leve ganância. Ele queria tanto manter o rosto de Ash na frente de seus olhos que nem pensou em olhar para trás porque estava muito ocupado. Queria fazer isso antes de mandá-lo embora.
— Você está acordado?
Ash perguntou baixinho. Seu olhar se acalmou. Os olhos que não sorriam de alguma forma pareciam tristes. A propósito, Ash estava vestindo um terno.
Carlyle nunca o tinha visto vestido assim antes. Seu terno preto era tão elegante como se tivesse sido feito sob medida, ele também parecia muito bonito. Mas seu cabelo estava um pouco bagunçado.
Seus feromônios suaves acalmaram a perturbação dentro de Carlyle. Seu corpo gradualmente começou a se acalmar, esquecendo toda a confusão em sua cabeça. O corpo acolheu o cheiro de Ash, do qual sentia falta há um bom tempo, não se importando que fosse os feromônios de um Alfa.
E enquanto recuperava lentamente a consciência, Carlyle ouviu os sussurros do lado de fora da porta. Era a voz de sua mãe e a voz de Luther.
— Há quanto tempo eu fiquei desmaiado?
Lentamente, sua mente voltou à realidade.
‘Como foi o banquete, o que aconteceu com a família Stewart, será que alguém me viu cair…?’
Então ele sentiu uma forte dor de estômago novamente. Carlyle franziu a testa. Ash rapidamente percebeu.
— Está sentindo dor?
Ash disse envergonhado, como se não soubesse o que fazer. Seu peito afundou. Então seu coração pulou uma batida antes que pudesse controlá-lo. Ele sentiu cócegas na nuca.
—…Eu estou bem.
Carlyle respondeu calmamente. Ash soltou um pequeno suspiro na primeira resposta que obteve dele. O olhar em sua bochecha era tão doce que Carlyle fechou a boca.
Assim que a tensão em seu corpo aliviou por um momento, tudo em Carlyle ansiava por Ash. E enquanto enfraquecia, Carlyle se forçou a voltar à realidade.
— Você pode me dizer quanto tempo eu estive desmaiado?
— Cerca de meia hora.
Disse Ash, sem tirar os olhos do rosto de Carlyle. Ele podia ver os dedos que descansavam em seus joelhos tremerem. E antes que Carlyle pudesse falar novamente, Ash abriu a boca.
— Isso já acontece muitas vezes?
Carlyle ficou em silêncio. Ele não tinha obrigação de responder a pergunta de Ash. No entanto, ser tão duro com ele fez seu coração lamentar, o que imediatamente se transformou em dor física. Então, quando seu estômago se contraiu novamente, Carlyle deu uma resposta curta.
— Não se preocupe. É apenas o estresse.
Ash ainda era amigável. Como sempre foi. Era Carlyle quem sempre agia mal, embora já tivesse feito um comentário sarcástico antes. Vergonha, e uma sensação de decepção tomou conta dele. Estava cansado. Não queria pensar em nada.
— Mesmo não estando ao seu lado…. Não quero que fique doente.
Ash, ao dizer isso só tornou mais difícil para Carlyle pensar com clareza. Sua cabeça ficou em branco por um momento. Então ele se lembrou das palavras que Ash lhe disse novamente, que um homem quando está apaixonado age como um tolo. Ash, disse que tinha algo a dizer, ele abriu a boca como se fosse confessar.
— Eu só não quero que você fique doente. Isso realmente me dói muito.
A mão de Ash que estava em seu colo, foi estendida para ele. Então, parou na frente do rosto de Carlyle e tremeu como se quisesse acariciar sua bochecha. Nesse momento, Ash perguntou a Carlyle com lágrimas nos olhos.
— Posso tocar em você?
Ao ouvir seu pedido de permissão, Carlyle sentiu um nó subir até a garganta. Sentiu vontade de chorar. A voz parecia desesperada. Seus olhos doíam.
— Só uma vez, deixe-me tocar em você.
‘Por que você está fazendo isso?’
‘Por que agora…’
Suas vias aéreas estavam fechadas. Sua garganta estava bloqueada. Era Carlyle quem queria alcançá-lo. Ele sentia falta das mãos de Ash tocando sua cintura. A mão que tocava seu rosto, os braços que seguravam firmemente a parte superior de seu corpo, os lábios macios…
A mão se aproximou do rosto inexpressivo de Carlyle. E quando estava prestes a tocá-lo, Carlyle se afastou. Ele sentiu que seria mais confortável enlouquecer. Resistindo à terrível tentação, Carlyle balançou a cabeça. Estava claro que no momento em que Ash o tocasse, seu corpo entraria em colapso.
—…Eu…
Com um sorriso dolorido, Ash afastou sua mão. Então, reprimindo o desejo de beijar seus dedos longos e unhas limpas e arredondadas, Carlyle perguntou.
— O que está acontecendo com você?
Ele perguntou, mal acalmando sua expressão. Em vez de se sentir mal por não poder tocar Carlyle, Ash calmamente colocou a mão no sofá em que o homem estava deitado e olhou para ele.
— Você vai me ouvir? — Sua voz era profunda.
‘Sim, talvez Ash…’
— Quero te dizer que eu…
‘Talvez…’
— Eu esteja agindo assim porque… Eu te amo Carlyle.
Sua respiração parou abruptamente. Sua expressão desmoronou. Carlyle apertou os lábios, seus olhos piscaram rapidamente como se tivesse sido picada por um ferrão. Não era uma ilusão. Incrivelmente, Ash estava dizendo que o amava.
Assim que entendeu, todos os tipos de emoções surgiram dentro dele. A primeira coisa que atingiu Carlyle foi a alegria. Para alguns, a palavra “eu te amo” era tão comum quanto uma saudação, mas para Carlyle, era uma palavra preciosa que nunca mais escutaria.
