Defina o relacionamento - Capítulo 20
A empresa de Ash estava localizada entre Covent Garden e Holborn. Em vez de trazer um motorista, Carlyle dirigiu sozinho. Depois de parar o carro em um edifício só de estacionamentos, subiu a rua a pé e chegou ao prédio onde Ash havia dito.
Ao se aproximar pode ver uma placa em letras elegantes e sofisticadas que dizia ⟪Unexpected⟫. Era um estúdio bastante extenso composto por quatro andares e uma grande parede feita de janelas de vidro, como muitos escritórios em Londres. Atrás da porta principal havia um saguão decorado com cores coloridas e muitos pôsteres.
Depois da casa de Ash, Carlyle sentiu como se estivesse pisando em outra área privada dele. Esse fato por si só tornava a espera em si emocionante. Começando por como seria Ash no trabalho, que tipo de expressão ele teria quando estivesse trabalhando, Carlyle estava curioso sobre tudo que dizia respeito a esse homem.
Depois de entrar no saguão tomado pela tensão, foi dito a Carlyle onde esperar. Quando perguntado se uma reunião estava agendada, Carlyle disse o nome de Ash. Os olhos das pessoas na recepção se arregalaram, e então a recepcionista saiu com uma expressão de surpresa olhando para os outros como se tivessem muito para falar.
Deixando para trás os sussurros barulhentos à distância, Carlyle sentou-se calmamente e olhou ao redor de todo o saguão. O tempo passou bem devagar, embora tenha tentado focar a atenção em algumas premiações em exibição no lugar, começando com o belo o troféu D’ AD feito em forma de lápis amarelo.
Foi então que ouviu a voz de Ash.
— Um visitante?
O que se seguiu foi a voz da recepcionista. Carlyle se levantou sem perceber. Seu coração estava acelerado. As expectativas, e emoções avassaladoras aumentaram.
— Sim, é um homem muito bonito. Ele disse que veio ver o diretor.
Outra voz foi ouvida. Era uma voz feminina, como a da recepcionista. Ele não parecia estar sozinho.
— Ah, acho que eu sei quem é! Não é a pessoa com quem você se encontrou na estação da última vez?
— Ah, eu também vi. Que tipo de relacionamento vocês têm? Eu os vi andando de mãos dadas junto com todos os membros da equipe de imagem!
Uma voz animada ecoou pelo saguão. Carlyle, que estava prestes a caminhar em direção a Ash, parou. Era difícil ter certeza que a pessoa se referia a ele, mas a história parecia ser realmente sobre ele.
Carlyle se levantou em silêncio e olhou para frente. Uma sala separada tinha sido preparada para ele esperar. Apenas as vozes podiam ser ouvidas, uma vez que a entrada da sala dava para um corredor onde os dois só poderiam se encontrar depois de virar a esquina.
— Sr. Frost?
Havia um sorriso na voz de Ash, mas ele parecia de alguma forma um pouco envergonhado. Carlyle parou completamente. Se ele saísse nesse estado, parecia que a situação se tornaria esquisita.
Carlyle ficou um pouco impaciente. Ele mal podia esperar para ver Ash. Queria muito dizer algo que estava esperando há dias. No entanto, as pessoas não pareciam estar dispostas a cooperar com o desejo de Carlyle. As palavras continuavam fluindo.
— Como pode o nome ser tão bonito quanto seu rosto? Vocês dois estão namorando?
— A propósito, Diretor, você não namorou ninguém por quase um ano, não é verdade?
Enquanto isso, a história de Ash, que Carlyle não conhecia, se espalhou. Quando ele ouviu a palavra namoro, seu coração começou a bater mais rápido.

— Sério? Mas vocês não estavam de mãos dadas?
— Mikaila, se você colocar dessa forma, então acha que todas as pessoas com quem o Diretor saiu são seus amantes?
— Exatamente.
Uma voz aguda e uma voz rouca foram ouvidas uma após a outra, revelando certos fatos repetidamente. Carlyle facilmente deduziu que muitas pessoas na empresa haviam testemunhado Ash sair com alguém.
Isso também era esperado. Claro. Ele sabia disso desde o início. Ash tem muita experiência. Sair de mãos dadas era uma coisa natural para ele. Mesmo que alguém os encontre…
— Que tipo de relação vocês têm então? Vão começar a namorar em breve?
A recepção foi marcada pelos risos e pelas perguntas incisivas por parte de todo o pessoal da equipe. Pelo tom das vozes transbordando de interesse e curiosidade sobre a vida de Ash, eles pareciam ser bons amigos do homem. Os passos continuaram a soar.
— Com o Sr. Frost.
A risada ainda estava lá, mas a voz parecia um pouco mais envergonhada do que antes. Carlyle prendeu a respiração. Ele não queria. Mas era difícil respirar.
— Nós não estamos namorando.
Ah.
Sentiu uma pontada no peito. Instantaneamente, seu estômago começou a doer. Seu estômago doía tanto que sentia como se tivesse sido atingido nas entrelinhas. Carlyle calmamente levantou a mão e apertou a parte superior do terno.
Sob o peito duro, ele esfregou a caixa torácica com as pontas dos dedos. A respiração ficou presa na garganta. Seu coração estava assustadoramente acelerado. Ele não conseguia sentir mais nenhum tipo de sensação em suas mãos frias.
Uhhhhh, uhhhh…
— Então não espalhe rumores desnecessários, Julie.
Dentro do seu peito…
— O diretor é afiado como uma espada em momentos como este.
— Então por que você não nos apresenta?
O som ecoou, como se estivesse vindo de longe. Carlyle não conseguia escutar com clareza. Sentiu vontade de fugir. Suas costas estavam frias. De repente, ele teve um pressentimento ruim.
— Mikaila.
Sua doce voz era a mesma de sempre, mas tocou os seus ouvidos friamente.
— Não tem nada a ver com… Isso não é possível?
Alguém sussurrou, talvez… Todos os tipos de pensamentos passaram por sua mente.
— Vocês pareciam próximos!
— Não tem nada a ver com isso.
Um ex.
— Oh, me desculpe.
— Não, muita gente vai se sentir aliviada ao saber que o Diretor continua solteiro. Inclusive a Olivia da equipe do RH.
— É o melhor resultado para todos.
‘Eu estava enganado?’
— Sim, então vamos entrar agora.
O som dos passos pararam. Carlyle olhou para frente. As pálpebras, muito pesadas e piscavam lentamente. Logo Ash foi visto.
Ash estava sorrindo. Como sempre.
— Ah, Carlyle?
Seu nome foi chamado. Os três pares de olhos ao lado de Ash olharam para ele. Os olhares pareciam perfurar seu corpo. Havia apenas três pares de olhos curiosos, mas Carlyle sentiu como se estivesse diante de milhares de pessoas. Sentiu como se tivesse sido totalmente exposto. Ele estava com vergonha.
— Você estava me esperando?
Ele não conseguiu abrir os lábios. Piscou os olhos novamente. Estava tonto. Carlyle resistiu ao impulso de tatear seu pescoço como um tolo.
Não, ele simplesmente não conseguia se mexer. Foi porque ele pensou que, se se movesse um pouco mais, desmoronaria ali mesmo. Aqueles que olharam para Carlyle, que manteve a boca fechada, disseram para Ash.
— Bem, então nós já vamos.
— Vejo você na segunda-feira!
Pôde ver Ash aceitando um breve abraço em um gesto natural e familiar. Carlyle olhou silenciosamente para a mão que alcançou Ash e logo caiu. Incapaz de compreender a situação, ele silenciosamente suprimiu seu ciúme estúpido e fervente.
Pensando bem, o sorriso de Ash para Carlyle não era nada especial para Ash. Seu sorriso encantador e gentil não era exclusivamente para Carlyle. Tudo que pensou que sabia até agora, parecia estranho.
— Carlyle?
Ash caminhou até ele com um olhar confuso. O cheiro de Ash, a quem achava que não podia deixar de amar, o tocou gentilmente.
O corpo domesticado de Carlyle reagiu ao bater de frente com os feromônios do Alfa. Em vez de mostrar rejeição ao outro Alfa, ele expressou seu desejo. ‘Isso é estúpido’. Então ele ficou ali, parado como uma pedra.
O corpo, a alma e todos os elementos que compõem Carlyle reagiam a Ash dessa maneira.
— Por que você está agindo assim? Qual é o problema?
‘Daqui para frente… Vou conseguir viver sem Ash?’
Uma expressão preocupada apareceu no rosto de Ash. Depois de alguns passos, Ash parou na frente dele e o olhou afetuosamente. Carlyle olhou para o rosto dele como se tentasse encontrar algo novo.
Nada mudou. Ash sempre olhava para ele dessa forma. Ele sorriu para Carlyle e falou docemente como se se importasse apenas com ele.
Carlyle olhou para os pés. Eles estavam fincados no chão. Isto não era um sonho. A gravidade esmagadoramente pesada desmoronou provando ser a realidade.
Ainda assim, Carlyle sentiu como se estivesse sonhando com os olhos abertos.
— Agora a pouco…
Ele mal conseguiu abrir minha boca.
— Eu ouvi o que você disse.
— É mesmo?
Ash não estava nem envergonhado nem surpreso. Ele apenas sorriu e inclinou a cabeça ligeiramente. O sangue quente subiu. Carlyle não queria ver esse olhar.
— Outras pessoas podem querer entender o nosso relacionamento… Por isso estavam perguntando.
Carlyle perguntou para confirmar que não estava sonhando. Se fosse, ele queria acordar. Um vento desesperado soprou. Ele não queria ouvir as palavras “não é desse jeito”. Queria acreditar que cada dia que eles passavam juntos tinha um significado.
— Meus colegas de trabalho estão um pouco interessados nos nossos encontros.
Ash sorriu se desculpando.
— Apenas para você saber vou falar com eles, quando eu os ver novamente na segunda-feira.
O que ele não queria ouvir era: “Na verdade, não estamos em um relacionamento”.
Não é isso.
Houve um silêncio desconfortável. Como um homem que perdeu a voz, Carlyle mal conseguiu abrir e fechar os lábios. A dor em seu peito era insuportável. Foi doloroso o suficiente para que tivesse que se curvar, mas Carlyle suportou novamente.
Sua cabeça estava girando. ‘O que devo fazer?’ Ele estava perdido em pensamentos. Era como se tudo estivesse preto. Tudo o que ele tinha planejado e esperado desmoronou em um instante. A premissa mais básica que o sustentava estava errada.
Uma imagem veio à mente. O rosto de Ash, que mostrou um belo sorriso ao vê-lo, agora estava tingido de preto, tornando difícil de imaginar aquela bela expressão. Ele não podia ficar feliz em receber tal coisa de alguém com quem não tem nenhum relacionamento.
Ash pode ter sido paciente com os sentimentos e o comportamento demonstrados por Carlyle. Ele provavelmente não teria sido tão paciente. Carlyle tem sido desagradável com Ash desde o início. Quantas vezes ofendeu o homem que certamente não ficaria com raiva?
Ainda assim, incapaz de compreender a gentileza e paciência de Ash, Carlyle jamais achou que isso poderia se tornar uma paixão. Foi tão estúpido. Ele foi um tolo totalmente ignorante. Era compreensível que seu avô o desprezasse. Como deve ter sido frustrante usar alguém que não conseguia entender nem mesmo as coisas mais básicas como representante de Kyle.
— Você não precisa.
Carlyle conseguiu recuperar a razão enterrada e enferrujada. Apertando o punho com força, ele de alguma forma conseguiu abrir a boca.
— O que?
Ash olhou para ele surpreso, como se não estivesse entendendo. Carlyle continuou, mal movendo a cabeça que não podia mexer bruscamente, sentia como se suas mãos estivessem congeladas.
— O que eu ia te dizer hoje…
Ele estava com raiva, triste e com o coração doendo.
— Não há necessidade de…
Doía tanto que Carlyle não teve escolha a não ser dizer:
— Gostaria de te dizer que não precisamos nos reunir na próxima semana…
Não era isso que Carlyle queria dizer. Nas noites sem dormir, Carlyle ficava repassando umas cinquenta mil frases em sua cabeça.
O que ele queria dizer. Queria perguntar se Ash permitiria que ele o amasse. Ele queria perguntar se seu coração insignificante poderia renascer com o sentimento mais precioso do mundo.
—… Essas palavras… era isso que eu queria dizer.
O sangue que corria lentamente por seu corpo esfriou como se tivesse parado junto com seu coração. Depois de falar com dificuldade, Carlyle olhou para o rosto de Ash. Ele não conseguia decifrar que tipo de expressão ele estava fazendo.
Ash permaneceu em silêncio. Ainda sorrindo ele olhou para Carlyle. Os cílios longos desceram e subiram.
— Tem certeza?
Depois de um tempo, Ash perguntou brevemente. Desta vez, Carlyle ficou em silêncio.
— Era isso que você queria dizer?
A voz de Ash era calma e suave. Nada havia mudado. Essa também não era a reação que Carlyle esperava. Foi doloroso, injusto, triste, os sentimentos persistentes o dominavam e sobretudo ele havia imaginado uma reação diferente.
Talvez ele tenha ficado chateado. Não dirá que foi um mal-entendido? Não vai dizer que não quer parar com os encontros? Isso não provaria que tudo o que viveram juntos não foi apenas um sonho?
— Eu não tinha pensado nisso.
Uma voz ligeiramente aguda foi ouvida. A sutil diferença trouxe falsas esperanças. Nunca se sabe.
— Carlyle realmente… É uma pessoa imprevisível.
Se Ash dissesse ‘não’ para suas palavras, poderia haver uma esperança se ele quisesse continuar com o relacionamento.
— Está bem.
Mas os bons sonhos sempre acabam em momentos inesperados.
— Entendo sua decisão.
Carlyle não foi uma exceção.
Ash cruzou os braços. Olhando para o rosto dele com uma expressão calma, Carlyle soltou um suspiro trêmulo sem emitir nenhum som.
Houve um silêncio estranho e constrangedor. Foi como voltar ao início. Não, foi como da primeira vez. Aos poucos foi sentindo isso.
Carlyle acabou de dizer poucas palavras para terminar seu relacionamento. Ash não negou em nenhum momento. Acabou aceitando facilmente.
— Obrigado por…
Ele pigarrou limpando a garganta. Ash estava apenas olhando para Carlyle. Seu rosto amigável parecia mais frio do que o de qualquer outra pessoa. Talvez estivesse chateado.
Foi ele quem pediu para se encontrar com o homem dizendo que tinha algo para falar. Ash provavelmente não esperava ouvi-lo dizer tais palavras. Mas os pensamentos sem sentido desmoronaram e fluíram para longe.
— Obrigado por todo seu trabalho duro.
Ash franziu a testa por um momento. No momento em que Carlyle pronunciou essas palavras, se sentiu tonto. Ele já não conseguia se conter. A este ritmo, terminaria questionando Ash.
Eles realmente não estavam em um relacionamento, ele não gostava nem um pouco de Carlyle, por causa do que Ash havia dito, sentiu como se fosse constrangê-lo de maneira semelhante às suas funcionárias.
Carlyle passou lentamente por Ash. Não estava com vontade de dizer mais nada. Também não teve tempo de pensar nos prós e nos contras de terminar repentinamente com essa relação. Não conseguia pensar em nada. Ele moveu as pernas trêmulas prestes a cambalear. Olhou para frente e caminhou.
Nem o pulso nem a mão que tremia descontroladamente foram agarrados por Ash. Foi assim que saiu do saguão sem olhar para trás.
Depois de sair do saguão, Carlyle apenas caminhou. Foi em frente sem saber para onde estava indo. Depois de caminhar por algum tempo, ele parou. Passou pelo Covent Garden, Carlyle estava se dirigindo para a praça Trafalgar Square no centro de Londres. Carlyle, que estava andando enquanto olhava fixamente para frente, se virou e olhou para trás.
Não havia ninguém lá. Ash não o segurou. Ele não o seguiu. Não ligou, nem enviou uma mensagem.
Tudo o que restou na rua vazia foi um homem tolo que acabou de despertar de um sonho terrivelmente feliz.

Carlyle chegou em casa às 17h30. Mayam perguntou como ele estava e Carlyle disse que estava bem. Quando questionado sobre onde estava o convidado que traria, ele respondeu que a programação havia sido cancelada e que ela não precisava servir o que estava preparado.
Ele saiu do banheiro um pouco depois das seis horas. Depois disso, leu o cronograma enviado pela secretária e trabalhou até meia-noite. Revisou os itens a serem aprovados e verificou todos os projetos em andamento.
À uma hora da manhã, Carlyle, que estava deitado na cama, fechou os olhos. Mas ele não conseguia dormir. As coisas que estava conscientemente tentando suprimir emergiram de sua mente, permeando todo seu corpo. Um suor frio escorria pela nuca. Seu rosto ficou pálido. Ele sentiu uma terrível dor no estômago. Era como se suas entranhas estivessem sendo torcidas e espremidas.
Soltando um longo suspiro, ele se sentou na cama. Como não sentia essas dores com frequência, não havia remédio no local. Além disso, a causa era óbvia. Carlyle não sabia como aliviar a raiz do estresse. Pois ele vinha das próprias ideias errôneas de Carlyle.
Quando a dor diminuiu um pouco, Carlyle saiu do quarto e caminhou pelo corredor. Desceu silenciosamente as escadas. O silêncio que pairava na mansão onde havia apenas uma pessoa era enorme e pesado comparado ao habitual.
Entrar na escuridão profunda o fez sentir como se estivesse se embrenhado em um pântano. Carlyle desceu as escadas e parou na frente do quadro que havia colocado na sala.
A pintura tingida pelo luar que transparecia do terraço ainda era linda, apesar da situação. Carlyle estendeu a mão. Esfregando a borda do quadro com os dedos, ele naturalmente lembrou o que aconteceu mais cedo.
Como uma pessoa que cometeu um ato não intencional, um profundo arrependimento o inundou. Foi uma atitude impulsiva que não combinava com Carlyle e, ao mesmo tempo, um mecanismo de defesa.
Em mais de 30 anos de vida, Carlyle Frost nunca havia expressado seus verdadeiros sentimentos ou interagindo com alguém de uma forma que o fizesse revelar o que estava sentindo. Isso se devia em parte pela forma como foi educado, mas também porque sabia o quão difícil seria para ele sentir a dor de ser rejeitado.
Carlyle teve várias experiências semelhantes quando criança, incluindo um passado onde sua mãe rejeitou sua boa ação e a constatou como uma perda de tempo.
Ele era inexperiente em superar suas feridas. Isso não acontecia com muita frequência. Isso porque oscilar era uma fraqueza, e uma vergonha para riqueza e o sangue que educou Carlyle. Diz-se que a sinceridade prevalece em todos os lugares, mas também há mundos em que esse não é o caso. Essa era a realidade de Carlyle.

Por um longo tempo, Carlyle ficou olhando para a pintura. Ele sabia que seu coração estava partido, mas não sentiria dor. Será como uma pessoa que a carne foi estraçalhada a tal ponto que a ferida estaria exposta até os ossos, mas por fora não transparecia dor nenhuma. Carlyle repetiu para si mesmo.
“Vai tudo ficar bem.”
Ele viveu sem Ash Jones ao longo de toda sua vida. Como alguém que viu a luz do sol pela primeira vez na vida, ele ficou hipnotizado pelo belo homem, mas estava tudo bem. As pessoas não podem ter tudo o que desejam. Carlyle viveu uma vida onde era difícil alcançar as coisas mais importantes, mas sempre conseguiu se contentar com as pequenas coisas.
Por esse motivo iria aguentar.
Sem convicção ou confiança, Carlyle fez uma lavagem cerebral em si mesma. Com um rosto calmo, ele engoliu em seco, fingindo não lembrar como Ash o estava olhando, quando tudo estava prestes a acabar. Ele nunca mais será o mesmo, mas continuará vivendo.
Carlyle ficou acordado a noite toda olhando para a pintura. Seu corpo, enterrado no sofá, estava pesado e fraco como se estivesse submerso na lama. Vendo o sol nascer de manhã cedo, ele se levantou do assento. Então, novamente, começou seu dia como se nunca houvesse conhecido uma pessoa chamada Ash.

O tempo passou insuportavelmente devagar. Assim como ele caminhava ao longo do eixo do tempo a força, as coisas ao seu redor fluíam lenta e pesadamente.
Carlyle tinha dores de estômago intermitentes e não conseguia dormir. Mas ele preferia não dormir. Em vez disso, ele aumentou suas horas de trabalho. Se ele se concentrasse apenas no trabalho, as coisas relacionadas a Ash ficariam um pouco mais distantes, então estava mais do que disposto a usar esse tempo.
Nesse meio tempo, ele desenvolveu um hábito. Toda vez que recebia uma ligação em seu celular de uso pessoal, que tinha vários vestígios de Ash, se sentia ansioso.
Dias se passaram, uma semana, duas semanas, três semanas se passaram. Carlyle esperou que alguém ligasse, mesmo que por motivos óbvios ele não quisesse.
Foi na terceira semana que o desejo sexual de Carlyle explodiu. Com base em sua última experiência, Carlyle decidiu tomar inibidores para evitar que o RUT inadvertidamente chegasse antes do ciclo.
Ele não poderia apenas sair com alguém para cuidar de seu cio. O mero pensamento de entrar em contato com outras pessoas o fez sentir enjoado e doente.
Quando foi ao encontro de Luther para que o médico lhe prescrevesse o remédio, Luther notou facilmente o cansaço e a gastrite de Carlyle. Carlyle recebeu uma receita que continha inibidores, remédios para dor e soníferos.
Luther inicialmente se recusou a prescrever uma dosagem dupla de inibidores, mas se rendeu quando Carlyle deixou claro que iria procurar outro médico para obter tal receita. Ele olhou para Carlyle como se estivesse preocupado, que olhou para o médico com uma expressão de questionamento estampada no rosto.
‘Não estou doente. Não é nada demais. Luther não tem nada com que se preocupar’.
‘Só…. Só preciso de um pouco mais de tempo’.
O RUT sem Ash foi mais doloroso do que o esperado. Seu corpo constantemente ansiava por outro feromônio Alfa. O calor que não secava e estava estagnado implorava por Ash. As pílulas para dormir não funcionaram. Depois de se forçar a engolir vários comprimidos, Carlyle enfiou o rosto no vaso sanitário e vomitou suco gástrico.
Carlyle sentiu-se tonto ao vomitar tudo que estava em seu estômago. Ele não sabia exatamente o que fazer agora. Caminhou com dificuldade, e com a mão trêmula pegou o telefone. A casa inteira estava cheia de vestígios de Ash. Um impulso insuportável o inundou. Com a mão vacilante, Carlyle discou o número que havia memorizado há muito tempo.
A ligação chamou por um longo tempo. Ash não atendeu. Foi só quando Carlyle desligou o telefone que percebeu quão sem vergonha e impróprias suas ações tinham sido. Em vez de ligar novamente, Carlyle enterrou o rosto no lençol e ficou ali mesmo.
‘Sinto a sua falta’.
‘Muita falta’.
‘Muita mesmo’.
Sentia tanta falta de Ash que lhe faltava ar nos pulmões. Temia a sensação de vazio que estava sentindo, parecia haver um grande buraco em seu interior. Suas pálpebras tremeram levemente. Carlyle soltou um suspiro superficial e olhou para o celular. Leu o texto que não conseguiu apagar.
O sorriso gentil, as palavras que diziam para Carlyle ir vê-lo, a mensagem de texto que marcava a hora e o local, o registro de chamadas que mal preenchia dez ligações…
Carlyle ponderou a frase que havia memorizado e gravado em sua mente. Então ele fechou os olhos tentando pegá-las. Mas, em sua retina, apareceu uma imagem gravada sob as pálpebras.
A silhueta do rosto de Ash sorridente estava em toda parte. Um leve aroma amadeirado, fresco e suave se espalhou. Todo o ar que Carlyle respirava tinha os traços de Ash. Carlyle levantou-se com uma dor como se seus pulmões estivessem sendo apertados. Ele quase caiu devido a fraqueza nas duas pernas.
No corredor escuro, na sala onde o piano estava localizado, na cozinha, havia vestígios da passagem de Ash por toda parte. Um pânico terrível tomou conta dele. Finalmente passando pela pintura, Carlyle soltou uma risada baixa e deprimente.
Tudo se devia a esse súbito sentimento. Portanto… Estava feliz já que Kyle tinha a sorte de ser feliz com Nicholas. Kyle, que manteve esses sentimentos dolorosos presos dentro de si por tanto tempo, era um ser admirável. Embora fizesse apenas três semanas que ele estava longe de Ash, sentia tanta dor que nem podia imaginar a agonia de Kyle, que conviveu com Nicholas desde a infância, vendo seu amor conhecer e se apaixonar por outra pessoa. Ele também era diferente de Carlyle. Se fosse Carlyle, ele não teria suportado essa dor por um só dia.

Nunca quis dizer que tinha nada contra ele. Ele deveria ter percebido imediatamente que Ash era diferente dos outros. Alguma coisa teria mudado se ele tivesse dito que conhecia o homem a muito tempo, desde o dia em que se beijaram?
Provavelmente não. Ash nem se lembra disso, e ficou bem claro desde o início que nunca gostaria de Carlyle. Era tudo culpa dele mesmo, por não assumir a responsabilidade diante das palavras imprudentes que havia dito desde o início. Como sempre.
Carlyle olhou para o jardim, que estava lentamente esfriando, onde as pétalas estavam começando a cair. Não havia mais vestígios das flores desabrochando, apenas das folhas. O verão estava chegando ao fim.

— Em vez de chamar um músico da Filarmônica, acho que seria melhor chamar um cantor desta vez. Roman Milato e Satima Rahal parecem gostar muito de jazz.
Sentados na frente de Carlyle estavam seu irmão mais novo, Kyle, e seu pai, Jonathan. Eles estavam tomando chá no pátio externo do jardim de Carlyle. Kyle estava explicando o conceito de sua festa. Tratava-se de uma festa para co-investidores do projeto de desenvolvimento da bacia do rio Fraser, em Vancouver, que aconteceria em alguns dias.
Embora os planos, a organização e os pequenos detalhes sejam realizados por profissionais, Jonathan e Carlyle confiaram a Kyle esta tarefa depois de decidir que seria útil para ele ter o gosto de definir o tema e liderar o progresso do evento uma vez. Organizar encontros sociais memoráveis também fazia parte da cultura.
— O Sr. Rahal gosta particularmente de Julie London e Chat Baker.
Jonathan acenou com a cabeça e concordou, como se estivesse familiarizado com isso. Carlyle, que estava tocando a xícara de chá, fez uma pausa.
— Então é essa música…
O som das vozes bem na frente dele estavam abafadas. Como se de repente fosse agarrado pelo tornozelo e arrastado para algum lugar, Carlyle se lembrou de Ash deitado na cama ouvindo a música de Julie London.
Com a voz profunda e bela da mulher ao fundo, o rosto bonito sorriu docemente enquanto olhava para ele antes de apagar a luz.
Carlyle levantou a mão por reflexo e esfregou as pálpebras. Tentando apagar a lembrança de Ash, mas sem sucesso. Seu coração batia rápido e uma dor aguda percorria suas veias. Pequenos pedaços de vidro pareciam correr em seu sangue.
—…Carlyle?
O som que havia diminuído imediatamente voltou ao normal. Ao ouvir a voz de Kyle o chamando, Carlyle abaixou a mão. Ao mesmo tempo, algo correu por sua bochecha. Ele piscou os olhos e olhou para o céu por um tempo.
— Agora…
Kyle olhou para Carlyle com uma expressão estranha no rosto, como se ele estivesse muito confuso. Os olhos cinzas de seu pai, Jonathan, também o encaravam. Houve um longo silêncio. Parecia que ia chover. Pois as nuvens tinham a mesma cor que os olhos de seu pai.
A água escorria por suas bochechas. Em vez de cair sobre a mesa, em seus ombros, ou em qualquer outro lugar, a chuva caía do canto de seus olhos. A água que se acumulou em sua membrana mucosa, fluiu silenciosamente mais uma vez.
Carlyle levantou a mão, com um olhar vazio no rosto. Depois de limpar suavemente a água, Carlyle secou silenciosamente as pontas dos dedos. Ele desdobrou o guardanapo sobre a mesa e removeu a umidade com um movimento contido. Então encarou os dois pares de olhos que olhavam para ele.
— Com sua permissão. — Os lábios de Jonathan abriram, mas logo se fecharam. Kyle estava olhando para Carlyle com um olhar confuso. Como se evocando uma atmosfera seriamente rígida, Carlyle trouxe outro tópico de maneira seca. — Eu… Eu tenho algo importante para te dizer.
Em um silêncio tenso, Carlyle chegou à conclusão que havia ponderado por vários dias.
— Estou pensando em me desfazer desta mansão. Eu sei que ela não me pertence, estou dizendo isso na premissa de que senhor, irá me permitir.
Carlyle pegou a xícara de chá, esperando a permissão de seu pai. Talvez a chuva tivesse parado e não houvesse mais gotas de água escorrendo por suas bochechas. Jonathan olhou para Carlyle com uma expressão séria no rosto, então falou devagar.
— Pode me dizer por quê?
Era um tom de voz um tanto preocupada que ele nunca tinha ouvido antes. Carlyle colocou a xícara de chá na boca por um momento, então, incapaz de engolir qualquer coisa, a abaixou novamente. Era quase impossível engolir.
— Não é nada de especial. — Kyle franziu a testa como se tivesse algo a dizer. Mas Carlyle foi mais rápido.— Agora que decidi com quem vou me casar, acho que é certo me desfazer deste lugar e encontrar uma casa para morar com a pessoa que será meu parceiro.
